French is my second language, but it often feels as it if were the first, as I have been speaking it for many years on an everyday and professional basis. My grammar is excellent, as I learned the rules in junior high school in the Paris suburbs (grammar is an important part of French schooling). I edited a 240-page scholarly book, De La Case A La Villa (published 2014), and I give both private and group lessons.

About Diane

Bonjour! Hello! Hallo! I teach several languages: French, German, and English for non-native English speakers. I tailor my lessons to each student's individual needs and I always go above and beyond the basic lesson, with follow up between lessons. I try to make learning a language fun and alive

Due to my enthusiasm for Foreign languages, I am fluent in French and can read Russian, German, and Spanish. French was my minor and chemistry was my major. I was elected to the Phi Beta Kappa honor society based on my achievements in the fields of chemistry and French. I have also enhanced my fluency in French by traveling abroad, including residing in France at the University of Poitiers as well as traveling abroad to Paris, Brussels, and Calais. I look forward to spreading my enthusiasm for foreign languages to others.

Dr. Chaz is a very knowledgeable and patient instructor. He is an incredibly adept musician. He can identify what exactly you need improvement on and provides the most helpful advice on how to attain that improvement. I have studied music (flute) for 10 years with numerous teachers and band/orchestra directors, all very skilled and incredible themselves, but I never received clearer instruction than with Dr. Chaz. He explained concepts that many young musicians (like myself) struggle with and he beautifully portrays the relationship between theory, practice, and performance. Additionally, I appreciate his emphasis on ensuring vocal health and meditation- meditating pitches so that one can internalize the pitches to sing them more accurately. I was planning to remain his student for as long as I could but due to personal health and scheduling reasons, I had to discontinue and hope to return soon. I 150% recommend taking his lessons. Get ready to learn so much and expand as a musician!
Mark
Really great vocal teacher. He's very patient to his students. He goes on all the topics about singing. He's really good at helping his students prepare for a song. He doesn't waste time on any unnecessary practice. He teaches his students how to practice at home. I learned a lot of singing terms from him as well. Overall, I think he's a great vocal coach.

French Lessons in San Francisco

By Carol Beth L. - San Francisco French Teacher

Interested in taking French lessons in San Francisco? Short of visiting France or another French-speaking country, you're in a great place for it! San Francisco has one of the highest populations of French speakers in the United States. Visiting French-speaking communities is one of the best ways to practice your French and make new friends who share your interest in this beautiful language!

Here are a few points of interest in San Francisco that may help you find resources to aid you in your French lessons:

1) The Alliance Française strives to be a cultural and linguistic resource in all cities where it has a branch – including San Francisco. You can visit the Alliance Française de San Francisco in person at 1345 Bush

...

Street, or on their website at www.afsf.com. Their classes and events include literature and conversation classes, movie nights, wine and cheese tastings, and more. The past few years, they have adapted Paris' annual Fête de la Musique (Festival of Musique) to their own locale. La Fête de la Musique occurs in June of each year. If you like French music in addition to French culture and language, it's a great opportunity to listen to local musicians and meet other francophiles.

2) European Books and Media (www.europeanbook.com) used to be quite conveniently located in San Francisco on Larkin Street. Though it has since moved, it is still relatively close by in Oakland. They carry a good selection of French books, including books for learning the language, children's books, and literature for older readers. If you're looking for print resources in French, this is a great place to look.

3) San Francisco Francophones organizes events for French-speakers in the area to get together and practice their French. The group has a Facebook community here: https://www.facebook.com/FrancaSF. They sometimes share interesting French-related tidbits, including language, culture, and occasionally random (but generally cool) other stuff. You can find their Meetup page with events and such here: http://www.meetup.com/francophonesdeSF. Regular events are usually on Sundays and Thursdays.

4) Several other meetup groups advertise themselves on www.meetup.com. The Berkeley French Meetup group, for example, has been running a series of events recently for beginning French learners, while the French Literature Meetup group, which divides its time between Berkeley and San Francisco, discusses French literature based on suggestions from group members. Search around and you may find more French Meetup groups in San Francisco.

Happy hunting for your francophile paradise in San Francisco and the surrounding areas! You’re sure to benefit from French lessons in San Francisco if you take advantage of these wonderful resources.

Remember, daily practice is one of the best ways to learn French. Speaking, reading, and listening to French as a part of your daily routine will help you make strides in your French lessons faster than you ever believed possible. Add one of these spots to your daily routine or chat with your new French-speaking friends each day. Most importantly, have fun studying French in San Francisco!

Bonne Fête des Mères! French Vocabulary for Mother's Day

Here in the states, we celebrate Mother's Day on the second Sunday in May (psst that's May 10 this year!), but did you know that in France Mother's Day, known as la fête des mères, is celebrated either the last Sunday of May or the first Sunday in June? Despite the difference in timing, the French celebrate Mother's Day in many of the same ways we do, but with a few uniquely French touches. First things first, if you want to celebrate this holiday as the French do, you'll need to know a bi …
