Yuriko is very knowledgeable, friendly and patient. I've been studying Japanese on my own for about a month and decided I wanted an instructor to help me. I was very nervous to speak Japanese in front of her as my studies have left me reading about grammar and vocabulary, not necessarily saying much of it out loud, but she quickly calmed me with her reassuring nature. She provided me with a lot of insight on the use cases for many words/phrases, as well as Japanese culture. I left my first lesson feeling confident and ready for more!

I'd highly recommend Yuriko to anyone wanting a Japanese language instructor! She's the best!

My lessons are full of originality and are designed to match your level and meet your goals and range from beginning to advanced levels.
For beginning students, I focus on teaching grammar first and using that grammar to practice making short sentences. For the middle and advanced levels students, we will work together to strengthen your vocabulary, listening and reading skills. Also, students write composition homework every time, and we correct mistakes together in the next lesson. Advanced level students discuss one or two news articles or themes that you decide and the classes are held in Japanese only.

Having attended American school on the weekdays and a total-immersion Japanese school on the weekends (and coming home to parents who only spoke Japanese), I was lucky enough to grow up completely bi-lingual. With over a decade of experience teaching in private and classroom settings, I make my lessons fun, high-energy, and tailor-made to each individual. Please feel free to send me a message, and let's learn some Japanese! Yoroshiku onegaishimasu!

About Laura

Hello! I am a NYC-based singer, pianist, actress, and animal-lover. Born and raised in Los Angeles, my artistic career began as a classical pianist, performing in venues across California, Japan, and Austria from a very young age. As a singer, I performed around the world with the Broadway tour of

Amazing! Talented vocalist and pianist that communicates very well. Has great advice and wonderful personality. Great with kids.

I met Laura at Harvard University when we were both doing our MFA degrees in acting. Since our program was not a Musical Theater one and I was not a singer, I started to take private lessons with her to compliment some of the training in singing we were getting there.

Laura is a fantastic singer and actor. She has an incredible ear as well as great knowledge and experience of what makes a singing performance pop. All this makes her an outstanding coach.

Even now after graduation, I am still training with her. Our focus now is on continuing the development of my singing voice. My goal is to reach a level where I have the skill and confidence to audition professionally for musicals, and I know I am in great hands.

Language Lessons vs. Self Study: Can You Teach Yourself Japanese?

Is it possible to teach yourself Japanese? While the best way to learn a language is always a private teacher or tutor, there are some things you can do at home to learn the basics. Like many new skills, given the right tools, some people can teach themselves. I have known people who have taught themselves Japanese—or anoth …
