Overview

Howdy! I have an undergraduate degree in Classics and an MA in ancient history, and I have been teaching/tutoring since 2009. I know first-hand how much hard work can achieve, but my experience in teaching has also taught me that the work doesn't have to be so hard when a student has experienced, dedicated help. That's what I'm here for! I have done both paid and volunteer teaching, and I have worked both for myself and for a university. I have taught a wide range of students - ADD students, injured students unable to attend normal classes, struggling students - in a variety of environments. I have experience teaching to groups and individuals; face-to-face, chat-room style, and via video conferencing. I teach language because I have a passion for it, and my goal with my students, whether they are learning a new language or furthering their native English skills, is always to help them achieve their own language learning goals. I look forward to helping you achieve yours!

Experience

Private Tutor

Dec 2014 - Present
Private

I am an independent contractor with this company to tutor in English language arts, GRE exam prep, elementary math, Latin, Greek, and Japanese.

Japanese Elective Instructor

Sep 2015 - May 2016
Angles Academy

As an independent contractor I taught the middle and high school Japanese elective courses at Angles Academy, a private academy whose philosophy is that all children can learn and whose mission is to prove that with small classes and individualized teaching strategies.

Greek Teacher

Nov 2013 - Jun 2014
Self-Employed

A former teacher of mine referred a struggling high-school student of his to me. The student was ADD and had missed several classes due to illness. My job was to teach him the Greek he should have been learning in class to prepare him to rejoin his classmates in the following school-year.

Japanese Grader

Aug 2012 - May 2013
Texas A&M Dept. of International Studies

I graded assignments, quizzes, and exams for all levels of Japanese classes, excepting advanced exams.

Japanese Tutor

Jan 2012 - May 2013
Texas A&M Dept. of International Studies

I made myself available as needed to all levels of current Japanese students to help with homework, exam preparation, and study strategies. I was also occasionally asked by a teacher to teach a student who had, due to injury, illness, etc., missed too many classes to continue without extra help. My job in that case was to teach all the language which the student had missed and prepare them to continue with their classmates.

Greek/Latin Tutor

Aug 2011 - May 2013
Texas A&M University Dept. of International Studies

I made myself available at set times each week to struggling students in beginner and intermediate courses. I also allowed students to set up extra meetings outside of my set hours to help them prepare for exams.

Emily was pretty helpful. I went into the lesson knowing virtually nothing about speaking Japanese and now I have a basic understanding of the construction of the language.

Emily has been doing an awesome job of bringing my son back on track. My son is new to Latin and has started Latin in 6th grade. Emily is patient, clear and motivating in helping him understand fundamentals. Thank you Emily.

She really starts at the basic levels for beginners and builds up slowly so it is very easy to understand. The homework is very easy and fun at the same time while learning. I recommend her for beginners.
