- Levels Taught:
- Beginner, Intermediate
I grew up speaking both Japanese and English at home and understand the difficulty of trying to juggle both languages! Whether you want to learn a new language, or simply want to brush up on your Japanese skills, I am always happy to be of help! Lessons will include reading, writing, listening, and speaking (both formal and colloquial styles). I typically use the Genki and Tobira books and also like to introduce students to classic and modern Japanese literature as a way to enhance the students’ cultural knowledge. I welcome beginning and intermediate Japanese students!

I'm an active flutist and Japanese enthusiast currently living in Seattle, WA! I hold degrees in Flute Performance from New England Conservatory and the University of Washington, and will continue my studies on Fulbright at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, Finland this fall. I believe that learning music should be fun and inspiring, but that 95% of artistry is simply hard work! I therefore create a positive and encouraging environment for all of my students, while still setting challenging goals. Additionally, I tailor my teaching to fit each student’s needs so that learning potential can be maximized. Stylistic choices in musical expression/phrasing are encouraged through the incorporation of music theory, music history, and ear training skills into lessons. I also believe that body awareness is important, and will include stretches and practice methods into each lesson, so students can practice efficiently and prevent injuries!
I grew up speaking both Japanese and English and welcome beginning Japanese students! Students and I work out of the Genki I, Genki II, and the Tobira textbooks. Japanese lessons focus on reading, writing, and speaking standard Japanese at the conversational level.
The National Flute Association, founded in 1972, is the largest flute organization in the world. Approximately 5,000 members from more than 50 countries join together in person, online, at conventions, informally and in forums, through publications and classrooms, in performance, in friendship and collegiality. Guided by its goals to encourage a higher standard of artistic excellence for the flute, its performers, and its literature, members include leading soloists, orchestral players, jazz and world music performers, teachers, adult amateurs, and students of all ages.Show More
Very clear explanations and very patient.
It was great! Mona immediately made me and my daughter comfortable and jumped right into reaching my daughter. My daughter couldn’t be more excited.
Very flexible, respectful, and supportive.
I truly enjoyed my lesson with Mona! She is very patient and excellent at communicating. I look forward to continuing my lessons with her.
Mona was very professional and well prepared for our first lesson. We got right to the meat of the subject and I learned a lot in only a single session. She adapted the pace and the content of the lesson to match my pace of learning which is very much appreciated. I look forward to learning more!Show More

Very helpful for someone who's learned Japanese informally over the years!
Mona has been working with my 11- year old daughter for several months now. She is very professional, reliable and punctual.....but most of all, she makes learning Japanese fun!!
My daughter looks forward to Japanese class every week with Mona, and is enjoying the learning process.
I can't say enough, how easy and efficient it is for me to work with Mona, especially being a Busy Working Mother.
Three lessons and so far as good. She seems to be working well with my son and always follows up with me via email to let me know how things went and what was covered!
Terrific first lesson. Almost immediate improvement in tone thanks to a few simple, easy to remember cues. Stretching exercises and body stance were emphasized as a foundation to build for quality sound as well as care to prevent injury.
I almost can't wait for my next lesson.
Mona knows what she's doing and is very kind. Not only are the links that she sends you during the lesson helpful but she explains when you'd use the words and helps you understand the appropriate situations for when you use them. She is very friendly and a wonderful teacher that will listen to your questions and answer them and her answers are never halfhearted. I completely would recommend her as a Japanese tutor/Instructor if you wish to learn how to speak and write Japanese while still having that relaxing environment.Show More
