I am originally from Venezuela, and Spanish is my native language. I have 2 bachelor's degrees focus on Administration. This means that my Spanish level is high proficiency, and I have been working in the banking market for over 14 years in Venezuela and the USA. Through this period, I held several positions in different levels, from Analyst to Manager. This experience helped me to develop my Spanish to a professional level.

Additionally, I am the first child, grandson, nephew, etc. This situation allowed me to help my family with the teaching process to my sister and younger cousins. Also, this experience gave me the methodology to teach and develop my patience throughout the teaching process.

I will be happy to help anybody to learn or improve their Spanish.

Spanish Lessons in Houston

By Bonnie T. - Houston Spanish Teacher

¡Hola! ¡Bienvenidos a Houston! If you’ve already started Spanish lessons then you know this means: Hello! Welcome to Houston! If you haven’t started Spanish lessons in Houston yet, then you have come to the right place!

Houston is known as one of the greatest melting pots in America. We have a rich Hispanic culture that is eager to help English-speakers learn their romance language. Another reason why learning Spanish in Houston is so unique is because of our relation to the US-Mexico border! Those who speak Spanish and English have a huge advantage. Many employers require or prefer that applicants are bilingual in English and Spanish since there is such a large native Spanish-speaking population.

Don’t fret if you don’t know m

...

uch (if any!) Spanish yet. There are several resources around Houston that can help you improve your Spanish.

1) I strongly recommend visiting various restaurants around Houston that enjoy speaking to their patrons in Spanish. This is especially important to practice if you plan on visiting Latin or South America or Spain soon and need to learn Spanish quickly. I recommend Mi Luna in Rice Village and a wonderful panadería (or bakery) near the Second Ward called El Bolillo Bakery. (I recommend picking up some churros and tres leches! Yum!) Both of these locations enjoy helping native English speakers learn Spanish. I frequently place my order in Spanish—there’s always room for improvement!

2) Another great place to improve your Spanish speaking skills is at the annual Frida Festival. This event celebrates one of Latin America’s most renowned artists, Frida Kahlo. This is a great opportunity not only to speak more Spanish but also to take in the rich Latin American culture—an important part of learning any foreign language.

3) Regardless of religious or spiritual preferences, Our Lady of Guadalupe Church is a wonderful resource! They frequently have events open to the community (such as ferias, various festivals, game nights, and more) that can greatly improve your comprehension of Spanish, especially if attended frequently. The church is very welcoming to newcomers and has a rich Hispanic culture. Their bulletins are even in Spanish and English so that everyone can understand and feel welcome!

4) If you know anything about Mexican culture, you are probably familiar with the celebration of Cinco de Mayo. This is a very important event celebrated in the Houston area regarding Mexico’s defeat of the French in 1862 on May 5th (hence “cinco de Mayo”). There are large celebrations at nearly every Mexican restaurant as well as various venues. Simply search online for where the celebrations are being held near you and I’m sure you’ll come across something awesome!

5) My final recommendation utilizes http://www.meetup.com/. There is a fun and educational group in the Houston area called Houston Language Partners. The idea is that you teach someone a language (such as English) and in exchange, you will be taught a language. For instance, I’ll teach you Spanish for an hour if you teach me English for an hour. It’s a great way to both give back to the community and improve your Spanish. The group also offers social events that are low-key, so no need to stress. http://www.meetup.com/HoustonLanguagePartners/

Spanish can be an incredibly fun language to learn, especially if you supplement your learning by engaging with various groups across the Houston area. But remember, practice makes perfect, so be sure to engage with Spanish-speakers frequently. Not only will this improve your comprehension and vocabulary, but it will also help you master the accent! Just remember that most people are eager to help you learn and will not judge you for not understanding the language well at first. Just try your best and get out there, and find a great private tutor for Spanish lessons in Houston! The Spanish language is awaiting you.

Signing off from the great land of Houston,

Bonnie

Spanish Jokes to Help You Learn the Language

Humor makes our lives better, but can it make your Spanish better as well?
