Spanish Lessons in Philadelphia, PA

By Alanna S. - Philadelphia Spanish Teacher

Although Philadelphia may be known by out-of-town visitors as the birthplace of America, real residents know that the Philly of our forefathers is so 1776. Today, the cobblestone streets of Philadelphia celebrate cultures, countries and languages from around the globe. There couldn’t be a better spot to learn a new language or immerse yourself in another culture.

There’s no doubt that the ability to speak Spanish is growing more and more important in this country. And with Spanish as the second most popular language spoken in the city, Philadelphia makes the perfect classroom - whether you’re brushing up for a vacation, want to learn a new skill, or hope to improve yourself professionally.

While taking Spanish lessons in Philadelphia, you’ll have endless opportunities to immerse yourself in the local art and culture, and you'll have the chance to meet like-minded hispanohablantes to share your adventures. Below are some great ways to turn your turf into your textbook:

Taller Puertorriqueño (http://tallerpr.org/) Focused on celebrating Puerto Rican and Latino culture through the lens of art and performance, Taller Puertorriqueño is based on the belief that communities can be built and improved through the arts. From book readings, theater performances, art exhibitions and much more, Taller Puertorriqueño is known as El Corazón Cultural del Barrio (The Cultural Heart of Latino Philadelphia). If it takes more than an art show to help the language sink in, Taller has endless ways to get involved. Through their Visítenos program, they offer workshops, tours, lectures and more to promote a cultural awareness of the Puerto Rican and Latino local community. Even better, you can brush up on the vocab you’ve learned in your Spanish lessons in Philadelphia while giving back to the community. Opportunities to volunteer as homework-helpers for Spanish-speaking children give you the chance to help yourself and another at the same time.

Raíces Culturales (http://www.raicesculturales.org/) Not only does Raíces Culturales aim to explore the incredible culture of Latin America through art and performance, it fights against stereotypes and encourages diversity. From mural painting to a monthly lecture series, there is plenty to explore here. If you are seeking a little more rhythm in your day, you can join the weekly Descarga, a community jam session and open mic. With Descarga open free to the public every week, you can sit back and take in some new vocab, or get creative with your Spanish homework and share your own work.

Meetup.com (http://spanish.meetup.com/cities/us/pa/philadelphia/) Let’s face it - everything is easier with a good amigo at your side. Through Meetup.com, there are tons of possible groups to join to work with others who share your goal. It seems evident that the more opportunities you have to speak Spanish, the more comfortable you will feel. Not only do these Meetups give you the opportunity to have fun and find new friends, you won’t even realize how much easier the language is becoming. At the time of writing, there are over 14 groups for practicing Spanish within 25 miles from Philadelphia, which range from happy hours to group outings to cultural events.

Hispanic Festival (http://www.elconcilio.net/blog/events/hispanic-festival-at-penns-landing-2/) Put down the textbook. Sometimes a fiesta is the best way to learn! Every summer, PECO sponsors the Multicultural Summer Series at beautiful Penn’s Landing, a summer-long celebration of the diverse cultures that make Philadelphia thrive. Every July, the two-day Hispanic Festival celebrates Hispanic culture with incredible food, performances, and activities. It may not feel like you’re studying, but immerse yourself in this incredible language and culture, and your education becomes a celebration.

Everybody can learn if I respect the student's needs, pace and learning style, and if I tap into his/ her interests and strengths. A comprehensive approach that includes speaking, reading, writing and listening is necessary, however I focus primarily on communication . I provide knowledge, fun, creativity and flexibility to guarantee a successful pleasant experience for all students.
I am a native from Argentina. I moved to the US in 1996, therefore I can relate to the feelings involved in learning a foreign language. I live a bilingual life raising my daughter who is 14 and my son who is 6 years old . I travel to Argentina once or twice a year. I teach conversational Spanish, SAT subject test in Spanish,

The students I have since tutored in Spanish have also shown tremendous amounts of progress - from improving grades and increasing confidence in class to improving fluency and communication skills in the workplace. I am patient and perceptive to the individual learning style of each student. This ability to personalize lessons is one of the many things that make me an excellent Spanish tutor. I recognize that everyone does not learn the same way, and I have a very individualized approach to teaching.

When appropriate, depending on a student's skill level, I can tutor entirely in Spanish. But regardless of the level a student is at, I have many creative strategies to use. Whether you're a beginner or in advanced Spanish, I am skilled at adapting my lessons to match your level. I have also developed hundreds of resources over the past few years, which I am happy to share with you.

I have been a language instructor in many capacities; both teaching English to Spanish-speaking professionals in Chile and teaching Spanish to English-speaking students of all ages here in the US. I hold a B.A. in Spanish from the University of Tennessee, as well as a language certification from Universidad Catolica de Valparaiso in Chile. I am a curriculum developer, interpreter, translator, and instructor. I would love to show you how to become a self-learner, which I find to be the greatest asset in learning a new language. I will not only teach you, but show you HOW to learn.

About Elaine
Hola! I have been teaching the piano and Spanish for over 10 years, and love seeing how quickly we all can learn a new skill if we just have the right coaching. I'm a firm believer in teaching you HOW to learn first, no matter the subject. Many of my students become so proficient in the art of being self-taught, they soon don't need me ( which I consider an honor!) . Whether on the piano or in the Spanish language, I know we all have the capacity for more, and I'll help you get there. I'm a mom of 2 beautiful girls and a little lab puppy. My husband and I love our kids and our Southern life! Feel free to reach out to me with any questions.
