My 12 year old son takes Japanese with Toshi weekly for an hour. He has enjoyed the lessons from day one. Toshi is a gifted teacher, and my son appreciates quick breaks during the lesson (it keeps him engaged for longer). My son says Toshi is a nice balance of serious and fun, and he also says what a great teacher he is. Toshi is supportive, encouraging and fun. What more could you ask for?!

I am actually a speech therapist. With 20 years since graduation under my belt, I am a pretty experienced therapist. My experience includes hours upon hours of children and adults. My reason for going with Take Lessons is that there are some people who want to learn conversational Japanese but don't qualify for "therapy" per se, because they do not live in an environment where Japanese is regularly spoken.

I am a native speaker, and I am fluent in English. I received all of my professional training in English. Might I say I function well in both languages, speaking, reading and writing. My desired focus is accent modification, targeting intermediate and advanced non-native speakers to bring their speech closer to native speech.

I am from Yokohama area. My Japanese can reflect mild regional flavor, but generally smack within standard Japanese.

About Chie

With the recent surge in popularity with all things to do with Japan, speaking the language like a native is an enviable skill. Many an excellent teachers abound, but I think my unique set of skills may offer an edge to those who want to learn to sound closer to a native speaker. I am a certified Sp

Do you want to understand your favorite anime show, movies or Japanese culture better? Do you want to learn to crack jokes in Japanese and win any crowd over? Would you like to do business in Japan and need someone who can not only teach you the language, but cultural differences and etiquette so you can win over any client?

Japanese and English are polar opposites in many ways.
Sentence structures are upside down. English is written horizontally left to right, but traditional Japanese is written vertically right to left.
Communicating can be difficult when what can be spoken directly in English has to be said in more subtle ways in Japanese, and this miscommunication can cause relationships to break down.

My passion is to help people cross cultural barriers and make new friends.
Learning a new language can build confidence and expand your mind in ways you never thought possible!

One of the signs that you have truly mastered a language is to understand the humor. I can ...

I can help you with conversation skills, correct pronunciation and proper grammar. I usually use a textbook called ‘Genki’ for my lessons. I provide the textbook so you don’t have to buy it. With ‘Genki’ we can work on various grammar points, vocabulary building, situational role playing, pronunciation, and plenty of exercises to improve your listening and speaking skills.

I try my best to keep the classes as relaxed as possible so that you can feel comfortable speaking and can learn at your own pace.

Mikuさん is awesome!! Extremely patient and helpful without holding my hand. I’m able to understand sentences better with less than a year of lessons. She’s very professional and prompt. The lessons are always interesting and I actually feel like I’m improving every time (even if it’s just a little at a time). I’m really looking forward to being more conversational in Japanese!!
Cathy
I highly recommend Miku and have recommended her to several friends because lessons with her are extremely fun, engaging, and thorough. I look forward to every single one, and have already learned so much in what seems like a short time--the time flies! She is also incredibly accommodating and makes rescheduling very easy and hassle free. I very much appreciate the time she shares with me as a student in helping me learn the way I do!
Adrienne
Miku is a great teacher to work with! I've been doing weekly lessons with Miku remotely since December of 2019 (now July 2020 as I'm writing this) starting from no experience.  I was worried about my ability to learn a new language since my only experience prior to this was learning Spanish in school years ago, but learning to read and speak Japanese with Miku's guidance has been the right level of challenging and fun.  Miku is a great communicator, flexible, really knowledgeable, adds nuance to the lessons we move through, and also really just fun to talk to and learn from.
