I elected to choose an online Spanish teacher for my daughter Arianna who is nine years old - after unsuccessful locating a local Spanish speaking class/teacher. Haven't had any experience with online teachers, I asked Take Lessons to recommend a Spanish native speaker from Puerto Rico. I needed to find someone who understands and is very familiar with the pronunciation of the Latin dialect. Ra's focus is conversational language; however, she was more than willing to take on the challenge of starting from the beginning with the basics, such as the alphabet, number, months, etc. and building into conversational sentences with Arianna. She is extremely easy to interact with, soft-spoken, and processes a genuine love of teaching. My daughter looks forward to their weekly meetings while embracing her Latin roots. We are immensely pleased with Ra. We would highly recommend her without reservation. Sincerely, The Lopez Family

Spanish is all about practice, practice, practice. But before you can practice, clear comprehension of the material is imperative. We will work together to make sure the student grasps the material and feels confident speaking and writing Spanish.

About Andrea

I am a comedy writer and screenwriter based in Brooklyn, NY. I specialize in creative writing, academic writing, and college admissions essays. Whether you or your child wants to improve their writing, loves writing but experiences writer's block or an inability to actually DO the writing, or w

Andrea works at the Writing Center at Grace Church School, a leading independent high school in lower Manhattan. I've taught there for the last couple years and make a point to send my students to the Writing Center (and her specifically, whenever possible) if they are struggling with any areas of their writing.

I've observed her in the Writing Center on a number of occasions, and she always does a great job navigating the difficult balance between helping students directly, and creating a path for them to work through questions on their own. She is direct, but supportive. She also is very perceptive of students' anxiety levels - many are kids who tend to stress about college and grades often - and how to change her tone, or comment with a personal anecdote, when what the student needs most is a moment to laugh or calm down.

Andrea's best skill in my opinion is teaching her tutees to adjust their priorities based on a deadline. She consults students whose papers are due in a couple of hours, and others who have a whole week left, and without being preachy gets across realistic expectations of what can be done within the timeframe.

Andrea connected with my daughter right away, encouraging her to push her writing in more creative directions. Andrea brought her bright personality to each lesson, making the writing process fun for my daughter. Together, they worked on her college admissions essay and a few English class assignments. Andrea helped my daughter overcome her writer's block and anxiety about writing to craft more personal, thoughtful essays. We are very pleased with the results!
Josh
My daughter had a great experience with Andrea as a writing tutor. Andrea helped her with her college admissions essay and she is attending Vassar in the fall - very pleased. Andrea is very patient, punctual, and has helped Claire gain confidence in her writing.

A teacher and an activist myself, I have been teaching Spanish for over 10 years and during this time, I have seen how emphasizing cross-cultural communication has greatly helped my students' confidence in acquiring the Spanish language.

My students not only go on to make new friends, but acquire new critical views that become very useful when searching for new professional opportunities.

I use a communicative approach and I highly value students' personal experiences when creating a lesson. I love to teach all ages, from beginner to advance.

About Alex

I have a Master degree in Romance Languages (Spanish and Portuguese). I use a communicative methodology, which emphasizes interaction, so you will learn in context (asking for coffee, or talking about your family), an and student centered approach, which is based in your personal goals. My cla

I had the pleasure of being Professor Alex Parada's student last spring. Not only was she incredibly kind, but she also taught with an energy that made it more comfortable for me to speak Spanish without losing confidence. She was a very encouraging professor who valued student input and made learning Spanish more interesting by covering real-world topics. Estoy muy agradecida por mi tiempo como su estudiante.

¡Bienvenidos a Nueva York!

by Elizabeth D. - New York City Spanish tutor (https://takelessons.com/profile/elizabeth-d)

Ever wanted to learn how to speak Spanish? What better city to be in than New York City, where there are plenty of places to practice with the locals and immerse yourself in the culture.

Events throughout the year and local spots make practicing Spanish fun and engaging. There are tons of ways to supplement your Spanish lessons in New York City! Here are some places that can make learning come alive:

Puerto Rican Day Parade When: June of every year Where: 5th avenue from 44th to 86th St Vibe: “New York Ricans” who are proud of their culture surround in throngs as the parade makes its way through the heart of New York City with colorful flags being waved in the sky. The parade is filled with many musical stars and salsa and merengue groups, and plenty of opportunities for Spanish-speaking.

Jackson Heights Broadway Strip When: Year-round Where: Roosevelt Avenue/Broadway from 62nd Street to 82nd Street Vibe: Lots of little tiendas with cultural jewelry, botanicas, street carts with authentic Mexican cuisine, and more. There are also restaurants galore filled with Spanish-speaking staff who have an appreciation of a gringo practicing Spanish.

Washington Heights Broadway Strip When: Year-round Where: Broadway and 168th St to 207th St Vibe: This area is filled with clubs such as 809, where you can practice Spanish dancing, including bachata. Here there is a large population of born and raised Dominicanos, who also offer authentic cuisine served in places such as Floridita restaurant, which is famous for their habichuelas and chicharón. Here you can enjoy some of the best food while learning different culture and accents during conversational Spanish.

Madison Square Garden When: Monthly Where: 34th Street and 7th Ave Vibe: Locals and tourists come together to see some of the most famous Latin artists perform -- Tito Puente, Juanes, Jennifer Lopez, Marco Antonio Solis, Ricky Martin, and Marc Anthony are just a few of the artists who have performed there. Seeing Spanish-speaking musicians live makes understanding the Spanish language fun -- plus it can lead to great conversation with others in critiquing the artists and their lyrics.

These are just a few of the ways you can get extra practice outside of your Spanish lessons in New York City! Give New York a chance to broaden your horizons and you’ll feel more confident as you become fluent in Spanish, all the while learning the culture and significance of certain events that may influence life as a Latino at local places here in the city.

¡Que tenga mucha suerte en tu viaje de aprender español!
