If you're looking for top-tier, enjoyable, results-driven tutoring, send me a message. I've been helping students ace their next Spanish exam, paper, project, or standardized test, for over 10 years. But more importantly, I build lasting relationships with my students – meeting on a regular basis; covering all aspects of skill-building, test prep, and organization; and acting as a consistent presence in the student's life. I currently tutor high school students in New York at Horace Mann, Riverdale, Trinity, Collegiate, and Dwight Englewood, as well as adults and younger students.

A knowledgeable and patient educator, Jesse has found a teaching style that perfectly balances challenge and inspiration. As a doctoral candidate in the sciences, it is important for me to assert my knowledge of a topic while capturing the attention of the reader. Jesse has taught me to transform bare facts and ideas into structured, sophisticated passages. He has played an active role in building my self-confidence and has helped me find an authentic writing voice to more clearly and elegantly express my thoughts. I am grateful to have his guidance and am eager to vouch for his excellence as a tutor.

I am so lucky that I found Jesse! He is thoughtful, thorough, patient, and kind, and his lessons always felt like they were tailored specifically to me and my needs. Even his teaching materials were personalized to include my name and phrases that only I would need to use (i.e. I'm an actress and piano teacher, and I've been living and working in NYC for over ten years). Highly recommended!

I have a Master's Degree of Education, K-12 certification, and 8 years of experience teaching Spanish in schools and tutoring adults and children. The key to learning to communicate in a new language is to hear and use the language in context. I teach vocabulary using stories that create with my students, and we recycle that vocabulary in conversations, role plays and new stories we create together. By acquiring language naturally in this way, students are best able to learn and retain vocabulary and grammatical structures.
I tailor my lessons to my students' goals and interests. However, I have a general system and self-created curriculum that I successfully apply to most students. When I work with beginners, we focus on the 16 highest frequency verbs and most useful prepositions and expressions in the language, so that my students are able to express themselves on a variety of topics in just a few lessons. I incorporate authentic resources (resources from the Spanish-speaking ...

I am having so much fun learning Spanish with Ellen! She is very encouraging and patient. I didn't know any Spanish before, just some French. I am surprised by how much we can actually talk about. I like that she gives me scripts of our conversations to read for homework along with recordings of herself reading them. I listen to these often between lessons and find that it is really helpful.

I taught and tutored and teach Spanish to USA Veterans and students struggling around campus for years. I have years of academic and practical usage/experience with the language. I grew up hearing it and studied it in high school and college level. I know what it is like to be a student in a Spanish class as well as using it in real life application. I also have 2 minors in Spanish Language and Latino/a and Latin American Studies (Formerly known as CBS: Chicano-Boricua Studies) which give me the perfect mix of language and culture.

I am very patient and work on your level. I have years of academic and practical usage/experience with the language. I use that experience to put myself in your shoes and give tips and cultural things that may help you better understand your new language. Also, my knowledge of Psychology helps us hack learning in a time-efficient way. No question is ever a dumb question and we will spend as much time on a topic as needed.

¡Bienvenidos a Nueva York!

by Elizabeth D. - New York City Spanish tutor (https://takelessons.com/profile/elizabeth-d)

Ever wanted to learn how to speak Spanish? What better city to be in than New York City, where there are plenty of places to practice with the locals and immerse yourself in the culture.

Events throughout the year and local spots make practicing Spanish fun and engaging. There are tons of ways to supplement your Spanish lessons in New York City! Here are some places that can make learning come alive:

Puerto Rican Day Parade When: June of every year Where: 5th avenue from 44th to 86th St Vibe: “New York Ricans” who are proud of their culture surround in throngs as the parade makes its way through the heart of New York City with colorful flags being waved in the sky. The parade is filled with many musical stars and salsa and merengue groups, and plenty of opportunities for Spanish-speaking.

Jackson Heights Broadway Strip When: Year-round Where: Roosevelt Avenue/Broadway from 62nd Street to 82nd Street Vibe: Lots of little tiendas with cultural jewelry, botanicas, street carts with authentic Mexican cuisine, and more. There are also restaurants galore filled with Spanish-speaking staff who have an appreciation of a gringo practicing Spanish.

Washington Heights Broadway Strip When: Year-round Where: Broadway and 168th St to 207th St Vibe: This area is filled with clubs such as 809, where you can practice Spanish dancing, including bachata. Here there is a large population of born and raised Dominicanos, who also offer authentic cuisine served in places such as Floridita restaurant, which is famous for their habichuelas and chicharón. Here you can enjoy some of the best food while learning different culture and accents during conversational Spanish.

Madison Square Garden When: Monthly Where: 34th Street and 7th Ave Vibe: Locals and tourists come together to see some of the most famous Latin artists perform -- Tito Puente, Juanes, Jennifer Lopez, Marco Antonio Solis, Ricky Martin, and Marc Anthony are just a few of the artists who have performed there. Seeing Spanish-speaking musicians live makes understanding the Spanish language fun -- plus it can lead to great conversation with others in critiquing the artists and their lyrics.

These are just a few of the ways you can get extra practice outside of your Spanish lessons in New York City! Give New York a chance to broaden your horizons and you’ll feel more confident as you become fluent in Spanish, all the while learning the culture and significance of certain events that may influence life as a Latino at local places here in the city.

¡Que tenga mucha suerte en tu viaje de aprender español!
