As a native Japanese speaker, who has spent the last 30 years in the United States, I understand the structural and grammatical differences in the two languages. This gives me both the teacher’s and the student’s perspectives, which I find valuable as a language instructor.

I have taught Japanese to college students and adults, using beginning and intermediate Japanese textbooks, and I am most comfortable teaching high school/college students and adults.
I can also teach conversational Japanese and/or customize the lesson to meet each student’s particular goals and needs.

Rie is a very friendly and patient teacher, but she is also very effective! She quickly assesses strengths and weaknesses and does a great job motivating you to continue developing your skill.
Ada D.
I started lessons with Rie in order to pass a college course placement test after missing the first semester of my school's Japanese program. Not only was I able to test into second semester Japanese with her guidance, I was also accepted into a rigorous study abroad program after less than a year of studying the language.
As someone who finds speaking another language rather frightening, I was very fortunate to find a teacher like Rie. Not only is she extremely patient, she tailors lessons and homework to the needs of her students. It only took me a few lessons for me to feel completely at ease while stumbling through grammar points and vocabulary.
I’ve had many different language teachers in the past, but Rie has definitely been my favorite. If you are looking to learn Japanese I highly recommend her teaching!
Lyla N.
Rie-san is a really great instructor, i've always felt a little awkward with online lessons but hers are really fun!

Maybe I'm a bit like you. I was interested in Japanese as a high school student, but had no one to explain it to me. I studied the langage in college, lived in Japan for several years, and now teach the language at the high school level. I also work as a translator on the side. I have a 95% JLPT N1 pass (advanced ability) and am certified to teach Japanese in high school.

About Matthew

I have been a high school and college English and Japanese instructor for 15 years! I'm not the prettiest teacher in the world, but I am patient and I like to get work done!

Do you want to understand your favorite anime show, movies or Japanese culture better? Do you want to learn to crack jokes in Japanese and win any crowd over? Would you like to do business in Japan and need someone who can not only teach you the language, but cultural differences and etiquette so you can win over any client?

Japanese and English are polar opposites in many ways.
Sentence structures are upside down. English is written horizontally left to right, but traditional Japanese is written vertically right to left.
Communicating can be difficult when what can be spoken directly in English has to be said in more subtle ways in Japanese, and this miscommunication can cause relationships to break down.

My passion is to help people cross cultural barriers and make new friends.
Learning a new language can build confidence and expand your mind in ways you never thought possible!

One of the signs that you have truly mastered a language is to understand the humor. I can ...

I am actually a speech therapist. With 20 years since graduation under my belt, I am a pretty experienced therapist. My experience includes hours upon hours of children and adults. My reason for going with Take Lessons is that there are some people who want to learn conversational Japanese but don't qualify for "therapy" per se, because they do not live in an environment where Japanese is regularly spoken.

I am a native speaker, and I am fluent in English. I received all of my professional training in English. Might I say I function well in both languages, speaking, reading and writing. My desired focus is accent modification, targeting intermediate and advanced non-native speakers to bring their speech closer to native speech.

I am from Yokohama area. My Japanese can reflect mild regional flavor, but generally smack within standard Japanese.

About Chie

With the recent surge in popularity with all things to do with Japan, speaking the language like a native is an enviable skill. Many an excellent teachers abound, but I think my unique set of skills may offer an edge to those who want to learn to sound closer to a native speaker. I am a certified Sp
