Learning Spanish in Miami

By Erin A. - Miami Spanish tutor (https://takelessons.com/profile/erin-a8)

If you're interested in taking Spanish lessons in Miami, FL, you're in one of the most fun, lively, and hands-on places to learn and practice in the country. The city is comprised of 70% people of Hispanic origin, with almost 35% being of Cuban origin. There are more people of Latin descent than there are non-Hispanic. I love this about Miami and that is the reason I moved here. I didn't want to hear any English and wanted to practice my Spanish. It worked out great because anywhere you go you can hear people speaking Spanish!

You’ll be exposed to the Spanish language anywhere you go in Miami. That is the beauty of this city and a benefit if you want to learn the language. However, to have an even fuller cultural experience, I’ll give you some suggestions for key places as well as one key event that you should see and attend. This will give you valuable insight into the Spanish culture here in Miami.

The main place you need to visit is called Little Havana (named after the capital of Cuba). It stretches for several miles and is famous for being the cultural and political capital for Cuban-Americans. This humble but lively neighborhood is a mixture of culture and traditional customs, and is packed with art galleries, unique shops, restaurants, and bars. It is five minutes west of downtown Miami and 15 minutes from South Beach.

As you walk along the streets, you will feel as if you have been transported into a Spanish-speaking country. You will hear the clattering of dominoes at Maximo Gomez Park, located at Southwest 8th Street and 15th Avenue. This is a famous spot where what they call “Cuban old timers" gather to play each day. You will also see a lot of open-air coffee counters, where people stand at the window and drink their "cuban coffee," also known as a colada or cortadito. The oldest is Los Pinarenos Fruteria. If you have never had a cafe cubano, you should try one, as you will have enough energy for a week from this one little coffee shot.

Cubans are also famous for their cigars, and no trip to Little Havana would be complete without a trip to the Cuba Tobacco Cigar Co., one of the oldest cigar stores and lounges in Miami. You can watch cigars being rolled by hand here.

If you are a fan of Latin cinema then I recommend checking out Little Havana Paseo de las Estrellas (Walk of the Stars), which is similar to the Hollywood Walk of the Stars, but commemorating Latin American actors, writers, artists, and musicians.

To remember your trip and bring back some of this culture with you, do not forget to pick up a souvenir from Little Havana To Go, a popular souvenir store.

One of the must-attend events in Miami is Carnaval Miami. This is the biggest Hispanic carnival in the United States, and a must for Hispanic culture lovers. It is a 10-day celebration that encompasses typical Hispanic food, concerts, sports, culinary competitions, a live Jazz festival, art, and dancing. It really is something to see. You might feel a tad overwhelmed as you are walking the streets during the festivities because there are so many people there, but try to enjoy yourself, grab a partner, and do some salsa dancing in the streets! For more information visit http://carnavalmiami.com

Last but certainly not least is the Versailles Restaurant, or Versailles, as locals call it. It is the world's most famous Cuban restaurant and is located at 3555 SW 8th Street Miami, FL 33135. It has been in business for more than four decades and is a gathering place and unofficial town square for Miami’s Cuban exiles. My recommendation is to order the Arroz con Pollo (chicken with yellow rice). It is delicious and you won't be disappointed. For more information visit http://versaillescuban.com

After you have had a chance to visit these places, you should be revved up to start taking Spanish lessons in Miami. Good luck!

Informative and patient classes centered around students needs and requirements.

About Rene
Knowing at the age of 5 that music was my life, by being brought up surrounded by praise music and gospel, my early exposure to music helped me to find every Instrument and style just my thing! I wanted to play everything and learn all aspects of music. I started with singing in the children's choir and then developed into piano and music theory. At the age of 12 I began to learn classical guitar, and at 15 took on various styles like Flamenco, Jazz and Rock. I graduated from High School having played in the school band achieving recognition In national Institutions Like IAJE (International Association for Jazz Education) and state band finals. I was also composing from a very early age, and at 18 released my first album (self-titled) which can still be heard and purchased today through various music outlets, since i have released over 15
albums with various ensembles and bands. In college I already knew from my previous experience that I wanted to teach and pass on the joy that music brought to my life. I studied Music Theory and Jazz and finished my degree in Music Education. I have been teaching all in all for about 14 yrs. And I have enjoyed every minute I have spent with my students learning as much from them, as them from me. I am looking forward to meeting new and eager students who really want to bring their inner music out to share with the rest of us music aficionados! and develop their skills to the peak of their abilities.

*** Lesson Details ***
My teaching method ranges depending on the student. I believe in my experience that everyone learns differently, therefore everyone develops at their own pace. I try to find key strengths in each student and expose this to their advantage, using their abilities to further develop their skills, this method has shown the most promising results and students usually find themselves playing and performing just a couple of months after their first lessons. Part of my method involves a lot of performance and recital opportunities to help break any fears and inhibitions a student may bring with them. Music is about sharing, so an early exposure to this method helps to strengthen and stabilize a core acceptance of a students style and path, giving them and those close to them a very clear picture of their development and achievements.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Has all instruments at both his home and college studio

*** Travel Equipment ***
I provide lesson material, song charts and a progression scale. I require student to have an Instrument and recommended technique literature.

*** Specialties ***
My classical training began in High School with Influences in Segovia, and Romero I studied classical for 4 yrs. and trained in Jazz and Improvisation with performances In Big Band and group ensemble. Also sang and played in the school gospel choir.

****Personal Statement*****

If you needed a reason

There is no question that music touches us instantly and activates images, emotions and memories that linger with us throughout our lives. As a casual listener or an obsessive music elitist, there are times in our lives when we get blown away by a sound so unique our entire body vibrates and resonates with the touch of something out of this world. I can honestly say when this happens to me I feel as close to a spiritual connection than anything I have experienced otherwise. I believe it is these exact events that have triggered my need to be completely involved in the making, performing and consuming of music. The creative process, to me, is the single obvious reason we exist in this world. We create and share, learn and interpret, build on previous ideas and inspire others to perfect upon this process. It is no doubt a very humbling experience to realize you are part of it all. During this process you come to realize how important you are as an Individual, how there is no other vessel like you in this world, nor has there ever been or ever will. You are here now and your voice, your talent, your gift is an instrument to the great choir of the human spirit. No one but you can relate this, a reason to be, to create, to give.

I first heard Spanish from my dad who's Colombian, so my lessons focus on communication via dynamic task-based activities! First you discover grammar functions & the meaning of vocab through simple comprehension activities. Then we practice these new items through conversation questions or communication activities that simulate real-life tasks like ordering food, asking for directions, or describing a person. This creates a fun atmosphere for learning and gives students ample opportunities to speak! I also like to use multimedia like videos, pictures and powerpoints to make lessons more interactive, especially online lessons! For beginners, I use the book Spanish Demystified or Easy Spanish Step by Step as a learning resource and to provide grammar homework.

Besides speaking, my lessons also cover the other aspects of a language: Reading, writing and listening comprehension. I target those skills with activities such as short readings & writing assignments for homework, and themed ...

About Christy
¡Hola!

I was exposed to Spanish throughout my childhood from my dad who is from Colombia, and from my amazing Spanish teachers in secondary school. After minoring in it at college, I perfected my fluency from living in Spain for 2 years and studying it for over 15 years! My adventures with the language led me to pursue an MA in Spanish. I am currently a PhD student in Spanish Literature and work as a university instructor for basic Spanish and Spanish conversation. I've also been tutoring individual and small groups of all levels for the past 5 years -- Young children, high schoolers, college students, and adult learners! I enjoy leading creative, interactive lessons that are different for each student I work with. My students have gone on to pursue bilingual positions, live in South America, or improve their performance in Spanish
class by 2+ letter grades! I truly enjoy the work I do in helping others learn an important new skill.

Because I became fluent while immersed in the language, I believe language learning comes from speaking and communicating! So, my lessons focus mainly on speaking. I create interactive activities that help students learn speaking skills like making comparisons or ordering food. I also make sure to cover other aspects of the language (grammar, listening comprehension, reading, and writing) through explanations, in-class activities and homework. But, every lesson I teach is different! I tailor them to each student according to level, goals, pace, and learning style. And I make sure to get feedback from students at the end of each lesson to help plan future lessons. Overall, I am a resourceful, enthusiastic, attentive and creative tutor. I strive to challenge students while creating a comfortable and fun learning environment. Students of any level are welcome!

I look forward to possibly working with you... ¡Hasta pronto!

Depending on your current level of proficiency, we will tailor a program for you that will take advantage of your existing skills and reinforce them while at the same time, concentrate on those areas (reading, writing, conversation) that you feel need improvement or will be most useful to you. Some knowledge of grammar is essential but the major emphasis will be made on those skills that you feel you will require most often. We will build on the structural foundations and give you those skills.

About Guillermo
My name is Guillermo Ferrero and I have been teaching since 1989, when while working in Geneva, Switzerland, I had colleagues from many countries around the world. I began teaching English and Spanish to those colleagues who wished to acquire a working knowledge of either language. I helped these co-workers acquire skills in Spanish or English according to their needs as well as some grammatical skills to help them gain proficiency in these languages.
I graduated from the University of Essex in England, in 1979 with a BA in Literature and obtained an MBA from the University of Miami in 1989. As an undergraduate, I studied Art History, philology and World History, which helped me gain broader insights on various cultures, their literature and history. I used these insights together with the skillset acquired in the MBA program to enhance
the scope of subjects I teach, adding skills such as the use of applications like MS Office Suite to offer students a broader range of information.

Learn Spanish with a native speaker. I was born and raised in Venezuela so if you need practice or help with your Spanish I am here to help you. Learn how to pronounce properly, reading and writing. Practice also your conversational skills.

About Maria
I am a flute performer, piano teacher and student of classical Indian music specifically in Dilruba. I graduated from my basic degree in flute performance at the Music Conservatory of Valencia, Venezuela. Recently, I am Music Business major at Florida International University and a student in Dilruba performance at the Raj Academy online program.

I am teaching a new method of piano learning that is most focused in which the children adopt a flexible attitude towards learning, create the habit of making connections, such as the ones between music and math, and apply the practice habits and memorization techniques from their piano study to other areas of their lives.

I have taught in music schools in Venezuela. I was a flute teacher and also a musical kindergarten teacher. I have participated in orchestras and music groups in Venezue
la and the US such as Youth Orchestra of Valencia, National Flute Orchestra of Venezuela, Chamber Music Orchestra of Universidad Arturo Michelena, FIU Symphony Orchestra, FIU Marching Band.

I am currently teaching as a volunteer in Mind & Melody, Inc. A non-profit organization that focused on bringing musical experience to participants with Alzheimers and dementia. The sessions are for one hour and they learn basic concepts of music and also explore different instruments through the demonstrations.

My goal is to teach music in a fun way and not only training the ear and the skills but also developing the mind and mindfulness.
