My Background

I've been playing with classical ensembles and rock bands since 2001. Even though I started on classical trombone and rock guitar, I have come to expand my repertoire to a variety of instruments and genres. During my time in college I performed with the University choir
, orchestra, and band. I also have organized, wrote/arranged for, and performed with a variety of bands in my home state of New Mexico, as well as Japan, and the San Francisco Bay Area.

Since 2006 I have been an active teacher. This profession has taken me everywhere from working with classical guitar classes in New Mexico high schools to Elementary students in Japan to a variety of private students of various musical instruments and genres everywhere I've been. Since relocating to the Bay Area in 2010, I've had the pleasure of working with lots of great students from kids to adults with a wide range of ambitions. Since 2012 I've been running my own full time studio.

Philosophy of Learning

Lessons are generally designed to work towards giving students the tools to accomplish their goals and become increasingly independent over time. While all students will study similar fundamentals regarding technique, theory, and performance, every lesson is as different as every person. What kind of music do you want to make? I'll tell you what you need to do to get there, and help you take the steps to achieve your aspirations.

I also love to help students put together a song, record, and produce it for them so that they can have a recording to share with their friends and family.

I also hold events for my students. (Check out our pictures and videos below!)
Younger students have opportunities to perform for friends and family at my studio every few months. Once or twice a year we'll also stage a larger event off site for more individual students and bands classes to perform.
Adult students also occasionally have events where they get a chance to get together and play music as well.

Aside from in-studio lessons, students also have the option to sign up for online lessons via Skype.
(*Online lessons offered during different times than in-studio lessons.)

*Unfortunately due to scheduling issues, I'm not currently accepting students for bi-weekly lessons. I can do regular weekly lessons, or occasional drop-in lessons, but bi-weekly appointments make it really hard for me to give the best scheduled times to my existing weekly students. I'm sorry for the inconvenience.

My studio is equipped with:

*Music Stands

*A P.A. System

*Vocal and instrument microphones

*Guitars, Basses, Ukulele, Banjos, etc

*Two guitar amps and a bass amp

*Various percussion including a fully equipped acoustic drum set

*A Roland V-Drums electronic drum set

*An electric piano console and Yamaha organ

*A MicroKorg Synthesizer

*A Tuba, Trombone, Cornet, Saxophone, and Flute

*An extensive physical and virtual music library

*A recording system that students are not only welcome to use but encouraged to

*HD Webcam and condenser microphone for high fidelity online lessons via Skype

I grew up speaking both Japanese and English at home and understand the difficulty of trying to juggle both languages! Whether you want to learn a new language, or simply want to brush up on your Japanese skills, I am always happy to be of help! Lessons will include reading, writing, listening, and speaking (both formal and colloquial styles). I typically use the Genki and Tobira books and also like to introduce students to classic and modern Japanese literature as a way to enhance the students’ cultural knowledge. I welcome beginning and intermediate Japanese students!

About Mona
I'm an active flutist and Japanese enthusiast currently living in Seattle, WA! I hold degrees in Flute Performance from New England Conservatory and the University of Washington, and will continue my studies on Fulbright at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, Finland this fall. I believe that learning music should be fun and inspiring, but that 95% of artistry is simply hard work! I therefore create a positive and encouraging environment for all of my students, while still setting challenging goals. Additionally, I tailor my teaching to fit each student’s needs so that learning potential can be maximized. Stylistic choices in musical expression/phrasing are encouraged through the incorporation of music theory, music history, and ear training skills into lessons. I also believe that body awareness is important, and will include stretches and
practice methods into each lesson, so students can practice efficiently and prevent injuries!

I grew up speaking both Japanese and English and welcome beginning Japanese students! Students and I work out of the Genki I, Genki II, and the Tobira textbooks. Japanese lessons focus on reading, writing, and speaking standard Japanese at the conversational level.

I am a native Japanese speaker with a Japanese teaching credential. All ages and levels are welcomed! Lessons are customized and catered to the needs/goals of each student. I am also qualified to tutor graduate students (Master’s and PhD) doing their thesis.
I believe when we learn other languages, it is important to learn their culture, history, etc. for better understanding. I’ve learned Japanese drums, how to wear Kimono, Tea and flower ceremonies so that we can explore Japanese culture more than just learning the language!

Bio:
I have been in love with language my whole life. This led to learning and studying English for the past 30 years. In learning English I rediscovered my love of Japanese language as well. I would like to share my enthusiasm for Japanese language with you.

I grew up in a family in which everyone was a t
eacher including my grandmothers, grandfather, aunts, uncle, and my parents. My family inspired me to become an educator as well where I would have the chance to make a difference in students' educational, social, and emotional well-being. I earned my teaching credential from Kochi Women's University in Japan and a Master's in Intercultural communication from Kobe University, Japan.

During graduate school days, I worked as a tutor for international Master's and PhD students to assist them on their theses in Japanese. After I moved to Los Angeles, I started my career in the corporate world, and have worked in the US, Canada and Japan for last 15 years. In Canada, I taught Classic Japanese and Chinese Poetry at Toronto Japanese School as a high school teacher.

I'm a native Japanese speaker with a Master's degree in language education. I have more than 20 years of experience as a classroom teacher and private tutor. My lessons have been well received and popular with students.

About Chiharu
Hi, I'm Chiharu. I am originally from Kyoto, Japan, and I speak both Japanese and English. I was an EFL teacher at private high schools in Japan for several years before I came to the US to get a master's degree in TESOL. I had a unique opportunity to start my teaching career in the United States soon after I got the degree, and I have been a teacher in the US since then.

My teaching experiences are mostly in a classroom setting at colleges, language schools and high schools, but I picked up some tutoring opportunities and started to give private language lessons as I was a classroom teacher. I currently teach at a local college a few days a week and tutor several students, and I enjoy teaching at both venues. As for my tutoring experience, I have tutored high school students who were struggling with their TOEFL scores and overall Eng
lish skills, some graduate students who needed supplemental ESL lessons to perform better in their business class, middle school, high school and college students who wanted to learn Japanese and needed guided assistance for their study, and some adult students who wanted to learn Japanese for their career advancement and who are simply interested in Japanese language and culture and want to learn them. I am confident that I can help you learn Japanese or English as a Second Language at all levels.

My lessons have been popular and well-received among my students. With my unique background of being a former ESL student and with deep linguistics knowledge combined with teaching experiences, I can predict problematic areas in language learning, understand students' struggle and frustration, and support my students as I provide more effective lessons and advice either in Japanese or English lessons.

Teaching languages is my passion, and I love helping and seeing my students improve their language skills! I am confident that I can make a difference in your life through language lessons. Please feel free to contact me to ask for more details about my lessons and schedules and let me help you learn :)
