Working with Johnathan has been a joy.

It was my purpose setting out to study music in general, not just to study an instrument but to use the instrument as a means of approaching music in the abstract. I set out to study music’s mechanics and theoretical foundations.

Jonathan is very knowledgeable and very meticulous. He has a precise and analytical sort of mind, and very strong foundations in his classical training.

To have a wealth of knowledge in one's subject is not enough, one also has to know how to teach (which is a whole skillset of its own). It is clear Jonathan is an experienced teacher. I have never felt rushed with Jonathan, he is very generous with his time. He provides ample resources for study outside of our sessions, and is quick to respond to emails. He has lent me books, sent me links to videos, and provided me with plenty of homework.

Jonathan has also been very accommodating in allowing me to have some authority in planning lessons and exploring my own interests. Particularly I wanted to study modal music and found a folk song in the Locrian Mode. We took a break from the Suzuki work we had been doing and he helped me transcribe the song and practice.

I could not recommend Jonathan enough, I am switching focus from violin to piano for the time being and will be employing him as my piano tutor, and I’m very much considering taking spanish lessons under his tutelage as well.
Ian S.
Ian Really enjoyed his lesson. Jonathan is very knowledgeable and helped Ian with his basic skills and gave him great pointers. He also gave him an outline and daily practice requirements.
Jordan
Jordan really enjoyed his first lesson. Jonathan validated for him that the daily work he is putting in is helpful and gave him small steps to go forward with.

This was my first lesson with Verena. I thoroughly enjoyed it, she answered all my questions that I had in the class. She was able to cater to my focus on learning both the grammar and the speaking of German. She is also very great to interact with. She is an awesome teacher! Cannot wait for the next lesson. I would recommend her.

Guten Tag! I completed my master's degree in linguistics at the Free University of Berlin and spent a total of over four years in Germany. Whenever I speak with natives, they tell me that my German is excellent, practically without accent! I would love to help students who are just getting started with German or who are already moving into the conversational level. I also have a lot of great German language learning materials that could be incorporated into the lessons. Ich freue mich darauf mit Ihnen zu arbeiten! (I look forward to working with you!)

Using books and online materials, I guide students through grammatical rules, vocabulary and pronunciation, using cultural examples as illustration. I'll buy whichever books are the most relevant to a student's level, age, and needs, and also ask my student to buy the book too. Some of these books can be used without a private teacher, in any case!
I learned German grammar with a very strict teacher, many years ago, and she was right to be strict: grammar is the backbone of the German language.
I collaborate with my German sister, who lives in Germany.

About Diane

Bonjour! Hello! Hallo! Yay! We can start in-person lessons again, as long as basic distancing is kept. I have been vaccinated and I would prefer my students to be vaccinated, too, but it's not a deal breaker. I teach several languages: French, German, and English for non-native English speaker

I have been a student with Diane for the last few years and she is the best French teacher I have ever had. Not only is she an amazing teacher but she is also genuinely fun to be with. This year, Diane helped me pass the French B2 Certification exam - she provided me with all the resources I could have ever hoped for, and I really couldn't have done it without her! I highly recommend her for anyone

I first started learning German due to a serendipitous move to Oklahoma following my junior year of high school. I have since really grown to love the German language and ended up getting a BA in German Studies (jointly with a BA in Spanish). I really love German literature, whether it's Goethe or Michael Ende, and I really enjoy Beethoven, Mozart, Bach, Händel, and also Lieder (Shubert's "Erlkönig" being my favorite). I am also a huge fan of Die Prinzen. I consider myself an expert in grammar-related topics (including verb conjugation, cases, Konjunktiv I and II, etc.) but am also willing to teach vocabulary, pronunciation, and other topics.

"We have been working with Wolfgang for about five weeks now. He is always very well-prepared for each lesson, with a clear goal in mind. He does a great job of adding humor to keep my nine year old son engaged in this new and not always easy language! I chose Wolfgang because German is his mother-tongue and he has extensive teaching experience with a range of ages. I have not been disappointed- he pays careful attention to cultivating accent, which is important and the best part of having a native speaker for a teacher."

"Kerstin worked with my son in preparation for the GERMAN SAT Subject test. She was excellent. Kerstin was always punctual, professional and personable. She is able to combine a structured approach to learning with a cool, "lets make this fun" attitude which works beautifully with teenagers. My son, though a good student, could not reliably have aced this German Subject test on his own. Kerstin was able to motivate him to do his best, which is no small feat, since I am clueless as how to do this myself. She has also tutored my younger son in German with equally remarkable results. Both my kids adore her and there is no whining about her tutoring sessions. HIGHLY recommended."

How to NOT Look and Act Like an American Tourist in Germany

Are you planning a trip to Germany? One of the keys to staying safe and not getting sucked into tourist traps is to blend in with the culture. In other words, when in Germany, do as the Germans do. Most American tourists don’t realize that there are certain things they wear that make them stick out like a sore thumb. A large backpack or fanny pack, for example, screams tourist. But it’s not just what American tourists wear, it’s also what they say and do. Certain gestures or gr …
