I'm a first generation half-Japanese American currently living in Boston, MA! I spent my childhood surrounded by Japanese language and culture, followed by 7 years of formal language training, culminating in a Japanese language minor at the University of Washington. My thesis focused on the manifestation of gender in Japanese performing arts.

Growing up bilingual, I understand the difficulty of trying to juggle two languages! Whether you want to learn a new language, or simply want to brush up on your Japanese skills, I am always happy to be of help! Lessons include reading, writing, listening, translating literature, and speaking (polite, casual, and formal styles). I use the Genki and Tobira books and also like to introduce students to classic and modern Japanese literature as a way to enhance the students’ cultural knowledge. I welcome beginning and intermediate Japanese students!

About Mona

I'm an active flutist and Japanese enthusiast currently living in Boston, MA! I hold degrees in Flute Performance from New England Conservatory and the University of Washington, and recently completed my Fulbright year at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, Finland. I believe that learning music shoul

We can focus on all four skills; speaking, listening, reading, and writing, but if a student would like to focus on only speaking, we can certainly do that as well. We also talk about cultural aspects of Japan and cover the vocabularies related to the cultural aspects.

About Emi

Hello, my name is Emi. I was born in Nagano prefecture and raised in Saitama prefecture. After graduating from college in Tokyo, I moved to the U.S. and have been teaching Japanese at public middle schools as well as colleges for almost 30 years. My hobbies are practicing musical instruments and

Sensei seems to really enjoy teaching. As both a native speaker and a longtime resident of the US, she is able to bridge the cultures in a way that many instructors would not be able to. I have been studying with her for over six months - both in a private and college setting - and I feel that I would be hard pressed to find a better teacher. In a college setting, she is very strict and covers a lot of material in a short period of time, and those who take her courses must be prepared to expend significant time and energy for success, but those who can keep up are well equipped to continue their studies with pretty much any other teacher or course.
Chris
Sensei Emi was patient, kind, and very thorough with her teaching. I started from knowing absolutely nothing about Japanese language or culture and now, having completed just 5 hours of lessons with her, I feel I have a solid foundation to build upon. Within our 5 hours we covered numbers, greetings, and almost all of the 46 basic hiragana. She was born and raised in Japan so it was lovely hearing about the culture and society from stories she lived through first hand. As I continue my education in Japanese I hope to return to her and continue to learn more. I highly recommend her as a teacher to anyone learning Japanese at any level.

Emi is the second private tutor that my company has had and she by far has been the best, hands-down. She is professional and experienced but she is also flexible with scheduling which is a necessity for business professionals who travel quite a bit for work.
The homework is not strenuous but is focused and important for success in her lessons. She also teaches at a nice pace but also is willing to work with you if you feel that you are falling behind. You can absolutely tell that Emi cares about her students and their progression with the language no matter their age and experience.

Learn to speak and read Japanese, have fun, and get to speak with a native Japanese speaker who only recently moved to the US.

I was born and raised in Hiroshima prefecture, Japan. I have a long history of teaching English to Japanese students at the Junior and High School levels, and use my skills now to teach English speakers about Japanese language.

About Yae

My family was enthusiastic about international cultures, and so I became an English teacher in Japan. I taught English to Junior High School students in Osaka for more than 10 years. During this time I realized the importance of experiencing other cultures first-hand, so I went to the US and studi

Mrs Yae isn't only an extremely careful, thoughtful and well prepared instructor, she is also able to offer an insight into the culture which helps a lot when learning a language that isn't commonly used in this part of the world. As an ESL instructor myself, I appreciate Mrs Yae's techniques when it comes to explaining some of the most complicated aspects of the language, I highly recommend her services.

With Masshy as my tutor, I practiced writing and speaking Japanese within the space of one month and a half. I’m one of those people who feel more confident writing than speaking, especially in a language as different from English as Japanese, but Masshy was eagerly helpful, supportive, polite, patient and kind (the list could go on), and we had fun during our casual conversations, conversation games (‘The three-second game’ particularly stood out to me due to all the fun and excitement of getting to its end with as many questions as possible answered in less than three seconds), and even made up a story together. Feel free to ask him any questions, be straightforward about your needs, and he’ll cater to them to the best of his abilities!

"I was introduced to Oyamada-sensei through a friend of mine who also had attended his lessons for a long while. Oyamada-Sensei is great. He always comes to lessons with high energy and we end up talking about film, anime, and games for a few minutes all the time, it seems.

I work 40 hours a week and often have to do lessons late at night. Oyamada-sensei has not only been flexible, but very patient with me given my schedule and available time for study. He's always met me halfway and never been judgemental; something I deeply appreciate.

If you're looking to learn ζ—₯本θͺž as a beginner (like me) or if you want to sharpen your skills, Sensei has you covered!"
