Italian Lessons in Brooklyn, NY

By Giulio G. - New York Italian Teacher

If you would like take Italian lessons in Brooklyn, I am Giulio, and I would be happy to introduce to you some local NYC resources. Whether you are an Italian culture lover or just planning to visit Italy soon, New York City is surely the best place to start learning this fascinating language, full of history. The best way to learn a new language and become more confident is to become immersed in the Italian community. Thankfully, if you live in Brooklyn, you don’t need to take an eight-hour flight to find Italian speakers. You can study right here in New York while having fun and making new friends!

Check out these exciting events and interesting places in New York that will introduce you to the Italian language and culture:

  1. Little Italy Little Italy has many original Italian stores and restaurants. When many of the first Italian immigrants reached New York City, they lived in this part of Manhattan. Each year, during the last two weeks of September, they celebrated an authentic, religious feast called the Feast of San Giovanni to make them feel as though they never left their home country. This celebration survives today, enticing Italians and non-Italians alike on Mulberry Street in the original Little Italy neighborhood. Here, you can also find the Italian American Museum, situated on the corner of Mulberry and Grand Street. You can learn about the plight of Italian-Americans and their contributions to American society.

  2. Clubs and Events New York City has more Italian clubs than you could ever imagine! To name one, New York Italians is a non-profit organization that strives to retain the rich history and culture of Italians. According to their website, they offer cultural events, culinary programs, language classes, educational lectures, and charities. You can see all the exciting programs on their website, www.newyorkitalians.org.

To check out a whole calendar of events in New York City, go to www.iitaly.org. This website is brimming with great cultural activities that guarantee your immersion within the Italian community. For example, you can find lectures on Donatello’s sculptures, modern Italian art contributions, Italian food meetings, tourism, and much more. Usually, there are about three to four Italian events per day.

Another way introduce yourself to the Italian community in New York City is the Italian Institute of Culture in New York, or Istituto Italiano di Cultura di New York. They’re open to the public during the workweek and also have a website www.iicnewyork.esteri.it. Here, you can find a calendar of events, language courses, an online library, and opportunities for members.

  1. Eataly Lucky for New Yorkers, an authentic Italian grocery store and restaurant, Eataly, is available to you in the Gramercy neighborhood near the Flat Iron Building. Eataly isn't just a culinary experience; it makes you feel like you're enjoying the genuine taste of Italy. Additionally, there are words plastered on the wall both in English and Italian, teaching you about cultural facts. What a fun, alternative way to increase your lexis!

With these resources, hopefully you can increase your Italian language and cultural knowledge while taking Italian lessons in Brooklyn. Have fun exploring!

Hi Future Students,

If you love the Italian culture and would like to learn how to speak Italian, I'm your girl!! I studied for 4 years in college and moved there for some time. I can help you with your hw and I can also help you, if you just want to learn some basic phrases to get around.

About Deborah
I have so many different things I teach. If you are looking for a voice teacher, I definitely can be of help. I have been singing all of my life. I sing in many different genres like pop, gospel, R&B, and classical. I can even help if you want to be an opera singer, as I am studying to be one myself at the Aaron Copland of Music. First things we would start to do is learn how to breathe. After the student understands good breath, then we will apply it to actual singing.

I also teach Italian, and have taught the language for 3 years in a private school. I lived in Italy for a while and I just love the language. If anyone needs a tutor, I can help!

I also teach art history, and art as far as drawing and painting. So if any parent wants for their child learn how to express themselves through painting or drawing, I can do that as well!!

I love to do all of these things, as I have a great passion for them! I hope I can inspire someone else.

Deborah's expertise and professionalism are a pleasant surprise when you consider how young she is. I have met teachers that are decades older than her who do not have the ability to accurately tell you exactly what you are doing wrong or how you can correct it. You hear a lot of, "just keep practicing and it will sort itself out" from other instructors, and this could cause you to develop bad habits that could affect your voice. Deborah is the opposite of that.

She pinpoints exactly what I am doing wrong during my lesson and offers suggestions on how to correct it going forward. I appreciate that because if your instructor doesn't tell you, your audience will. And you might not like how they say it. I am there to go beyond just singing in the shower, and her constructive criticism only makes me better. She is also polite when she corrects you, she's not cracking the whip.

She focuses immediately on different techniques that will help you improve your voice so that you can PROGRESS, instead of just banging out scales on the piano lesson after lesson and overlooking mistakes a student may make like some instructors do. I hate to be this blunt, but there are some instructors I have met in the past who do just that (none of them are from takelessons) to me it shows a devotion to the art and a commitment to bringing out the best voice that you have she wants you to be as good as her! To me no one could ask for any more than that in a voice instructor. I wholeheartedly recommend her to anyone looking for a teacher.

Just as she promise ;work on breathing first, usually I like some time go by before I make a comment but the first introduction went so well, I have a positive outlook of my future practice. I have my questions answer and I also understand them as well. I am sure I have more and have confidence they will be answer....

I have a conversation-based curriculum I designed based on my 5 years of teaching introductory Italian. My lessons are fun and get you communicating in the language as quickly as possible. The book I send you will outline the basics of Italian grammar, and we fill in with additional vocabulary according to student interest.

About Peter
I love sharing knowledge! Math has always been a passion for me, and I competed in several math competitions even in elementary school. Since then I have tutored many students in math from a fourth grade level to college math. I scored a 34 on the ACT and I enjoy helping others achieve their dreams by getting college scholarships. I lived in Italy for more than 2 years and have worked as an Italian teacher and tutor for 5 years. I have been playing guitar and making music for 19 years. You can check out my CD, "Songs from Pablo's Attic," on Spotify and iTunes. I am currently attending graduate school at the University of Utah and our tutoring endeavors help us work through school in a meaningful way.

Being a native Italian and having lived in Rome for over 30 years gives me the necessary knowledge to know what is needed in order to learn the Italian language and get deeper into the Italian culture. Also having over 20 years of teaching experience allows me to tailor my knowledge to the need of every particular student. I really enjoy to transfer my knowledge and solve the unique problems that every student encounter during their path.

About Andrea
Bassist and composer Andrea Veneziani performs extensively within the improvised music scene, across a broad spectrum of genres. His instrumental tone, sensitivity and imagination, and melodic approach to a supposedly clumsy instrument brought him to perform and record with many established musicians. Based in New York City, his work as an instrumentalist and composer can be regularly heard at the top jazz clubs in the city and around the globe.

As a current faculty member of the New York Jazz Workshop, Andrea Veneziani is a dedicated educator. He has taught master classes at the National Institute of Music and the National University of Costa Rica, at the Boğaziçi University in Istanbul, Turkey and at the Olav Duun Videregående Skole in Namsos, Norway. He also served as an adjunct professor at New York University, where he graduated i
n 2011 with a Master of Music Degree in Performance with a Concentration in Jazz as a Fulbright scholarship recipient.

Andrea is a fantastic teacher. I came to the bass with some music background, and Andrea met me right where I needed him to meet me. His teaching methods are clear, concise, and all-encompassing. We focus on music theory, technique, and playing each lesson, and Andrea has greatly expanded my musical vocabulary and repertoire. I'm amazed at my progress so far, and I look forward to getting even better with Andrea's tutelage!

Many Italian teachers are native speakers, but I earned my fluency just like you will- with study, practice, and immersion. I got my BA with Honors in Italian from Vassar College after studying for a semester at the Università di Bologna and completing my full-length musicological thesis on Italian Opera, written entirely in Italian.

As a non-native speaker, I had to learn the language inside and out. I already had to conquer every linguistical challenge that you will face on your journey with Italian, so I know how to teach the language in a way that English speakers like you can understand! We can work together to develop a curriculum that will help you reach your goals of learning the most beautiful language in the world.

About Madeline
I'm an opera singer who's been making music since before I could talk, and I can't wait to share my love of music with you! I graduated from Vassar College with my BA in Music and Italian in 2016 and recently moved to New York to pursue my career. I have experience teaching Voice, Piano, and Early Childhood music lessons.

I began taking voice lessons at age 11. I had wonderful teachers who taught me classical technique to keep my voice healthy, supported, and controlled. Though I later chose to pursue a career in classical music, I initially was interested in musical theater. I am eternally grateful to my teachers for teaching me to sing classically and I maintain that all voice students should have that same foundation in classical bel canto technique, regardless of their preferred performance genre- good technique can be applied to wh
atever you sing!

In addition to Voice, I teaching beginning piano. I began studying piano long before voice, when I was only five years old. Learning to play the piano is crucial for any aspiring musician and aids in the development of fine motor skills, reading skills, and math skills in young children.

Whatever your skill level and whatever your goals, I would love to work with you to develop your musical skills. I feel confident that we can make some amazing music together!

I was born in Italy and lived there for 36 years. I went to school there and I have a Bachelor Degree from one of the oldest Universities in Europe, the University of Verona. Before college, I attended the Liceo Linguistico, where I extensively studied Italian Grammar in connection to Latin, French and German. I can honestly say I master the Italian grammar in all of its structures.
I have been working in Customer Service for an American Bank in Italy for the last 10 years. In addition to that, I have been tutoring students of different ages, Elementary School all the way to High School, since I was in college. The subjects I covered were for the most part English, Italian and Math. I was also tutoring adults who wanted to learn English as beginners or improve their conversation skills. I loved my job at the bank, but at the same time there was nothing more satisfying than seeing my students succeed: I have always enjoyed helping people improve their communication skills and improve ...

About Francesca
I was born and raised in Vicenza, an hour west from Venice. My husband is American, we met in Italy and after living together there for 15 years, we decided to move back to the US last Summer. We have two kids, 7 and 4, who are perfectly bilingual.
I have always enjoyed teaching English to little kids and adult friends in Italy, so I can only enjoy teaching Italian even more. Although I'm enjoying this adventure in the US, I miss my country tremendously and teaching and speaking my own language is one of the things that excites me the most. I have also travelled Italy and most of Europe extensively, and I love discussing about all the different cultural environments that I've experienced.
