I feel that learning in general and learning a foreign language in particular is about repetition and I ask my students to repeat everything I teach over and over again until they know it by heart. I keep my lessons simple to avoid overwhelming the students and to allow time for them to repeat what they learned earlier. I teach the words that form part of the so called core vocabulary; words that are chosen according to frequency and range (in the sense that they “occur across a wide variety of texts”) It is often said that the first 2000 most frequent words cover approximately 90% of the vocabulary used by native-speakers in daily conversations. This means that for a student they represent the basic resource to be able to communicate.

About Stefania

"I took lessons with Sabrina over several years in small group settings. She always made the meetings fun and addressed the group's individual needs. She was always prepared with great ideas. Sabrina gave me confidence to engage in conversation in Italy on my early trips and then helped me prepare for a 2-week course at a language school in Italy. I was able to get into one of the more advanced classes, thanks in large part to Sabrina's tutoring. I was sad to move away from Sabrina's location and the opportunity for classes but am happy to see the online option."

Learn Italian in Boston

One of Europe's romance languages, Italian is rooted deeply in Latin - the language of the ancient Romans. Modern Italian didn't begin developing until the 13th and 14th centuries. Originally the Tuscan dialect, modern Italian was eventually standardized and used across Italy after the country's unification in 1861.

Today, about 66 million people speak Italian. It's commonly spoken in countries around the world, but Italian is only the official language of Italy, Vatican City, Switzerland, and San Marino. Italian-Americans are one of the largest immigrant groups in the U.S., so it’s no wonder the language is one of the most popular languages to study. Plus, Italian culture, with its majestic art and architecture, delectable cuisine, and romantic music, is irresistible.

Benefits of Taking Italian Language Lessons in Boston

About 500,000 Italian-Americans live in Boston, so anyone taking Italian classes in Boston will find plenty of opportunities to practice speaking with the locals while enjoying rich cultural experiences.

The majority of Italian-speaking Bostonians live in the North End, Boston's Little Italy. This historic neighborhood dates back to 1630 and pairs iconic American history attractions with Italian traditions. You can attend one of the North End's many festivals which are scheduled regularly on Catholic feast days, like the Madonna Della Cava Feast or Saint Anthony Feast.

You'll experience parades, church processions, delicious foods, traditional costumes, music, and scads of confetti. The neighborhood also hosts a monthly Italian dessert tour and an annual pizza festival.

One of the best parts of taking private Italian classes in Boston is that you can meet with your instructor anywhere, including your home. This coffee shop features old-world charm and traditional Italian espresso.

If you sign up for online lessons instead, all you'll need is a strong internet connection and a quiet location to video chat with your tutor. Bring home a traditional pie from Crush Pizza and find a comfortable spot for your lesson. Or, venture out to a coffee house like Caffe Paradiso. If you plan to study in a public location, remember to bring a good set of headphones!

Making the Most of Italian Lessons in Boston

Stop by the North End's Bromfield Pen Shop for notebooks, note cards, pens, and highlighters for taking notes while you learn Italian in Boston. Then visit the Boston College bookstore to purchase an English-Italian dictionary if you’d like.

When you're ready to try out your new skills, join one of the local Meetup groups like Boston Italian Language and Culture, or Speaking of Italy.
