Italian Resources in San Diego

Are you thinking about taking Italian lessons in San Diego? Luckily, you live in the perfect location as San Diego is home to a large Italian population. From predominately Italian-speaking communities to cultural events and festivals, San Diego is a great place to practice and improve your Italian skills. After all, there’s no better way to improve your language skills than to immerse yourself in the culture. Below are some points of interest and events in San Diego that can help supplement your Italian lessons.

Little Italy Located in downtown San Diego, Little Italy is a bustling neighborhood filled with Italian restaurants, retail shops, art galleries, and more. Little Italy, which was once an Italian fishing neighborhood, is a great place to chat with Italian native speakers, learn about the culture, and dine on traditional dishes. We recommend attending the neighborhood’s farmers’ market (i.e. Mercato in Italian) which offers residents fresh produce and specialty items happening every Saturday. To ensure that the neighborhood maintains its Italian roots, there are several organizations, including the ItalianSanDiego (ISD) and the Little Italy Association (LIA), that aim to bring together all things Italian, including art, music, food, and festivals.

Italian Film Festival Speaking of festivals, San Diego is known for its array of film festivals, including the San Diego Italian Film Festival. Attendees can enjoy notable present and past Italian films, while hearing expert insights from various scholars and directors. In addition to showing films, the San Diego Italian Film Festival also throws several cultural events, including the CineCucina and Dine on the Docks, which celebrate both Italian film and cuisine. Watching films in which actors only speak Italian will help you better understand the language and learn the proper pronunciation of words. There’s no better place to learn the Italian language and culture than the San Diego Italian Film Festival!

Convivio Center The Convivio Center, located in Del Mar, is a place where residents can go to learn and celebrate all things Italian from food to film to culture. The center houses the Little Italy Heritage Museum, which regularly displays Italian-inspired exhibitions from native Italians. In addition, the Convivio Center offers several programs, including lecture series and workshops, in which attendees can learn about Italian science and humanities, music, and film. Attending such lectures and workshops will give you helpful insight into the culture and history of Italy. Channel your inner Italian and feel a part of the community at the Convivio Center.

Home to many Italian native speakers, San Diego is a great place to learn and practice Italian. So, what are you waiting for? Get started on your Italian journey by taking Italian lessons in San Diego.

The student will be assigned and choose songs to learn and work on as we incorporate the techniques into the songs and vocal exercises.

I was born and raised in Rome and move to the U.S. to pursue my dream. I provide customized lessons based on the student's specific need. I believe immersion is the best way to learn a language (that is how I learned English), therefore I try to minimize English interactions during the lessons. I also give practical exercises for the students to do between lessons. Unless specifically requested by the students, my lessons are typically not grammar-heavy but are more focused on useful Italian conversations to help the students become comfortable speaking and understanding.

About Karen
My mission is to help everyone, from beginner to expert, feel comfortable engaging in Italian conversations and believing that learning a second language is not only necessary but possible!

I provide lessons to people of all ages determined to learn or improve Italian. Each lesson is customized based on the specific needs of each student and the goals they are ready to achieve.

~Parlare é la chiave per imparare~

Cancellation or reschedule policy: If you need to cancel or reschedule a lesson, I will be happy to do so but would require 24 hours notice prior to your scheduled lesson time. After the 24h notice period, the full amount of the lesson will be charged. Emergencies are excluded.

I feel that learning in general and learning a foreign language in particular is about repetition and I ask my students to repeat everything I teach over and over again until they know it by heart. I keep my lessons simple to avoid overwhelming the students and to allow time for them to repeat what they learned earlier. I teach the words that form part of the so called core vocabulary; words that are chosen according to frequency and range (in the sense that they “occur across a wide variety of texts”) It is often said that the first 2000 most frequent words cover approximately 90% of the vocabulary used by native-speakers in daily conversations. This means that for a student they represent the basic resource to be able to communicate.

About Stefania
I am Italian. I moved to Canada first and the US next in my thirties. I love teaching. I own a retail training and consulting company. I have taught Italian on and off over the years and have always loved doing it. I am very passionate about the topics I teach and have a clear understanding of the complexities of learning and most importantly remembering things that are new to us. Hence, my obsession with repetition and never move to the next lesson until prior ones are fully mastered. I use multiple tricks to make a lesson engaging, different and fun to attend.
