About Luke
I am deeply passionate about sharing knowledge with others and have been lucky to be teaching my entire adult life. There are so many enriching experiences available to us when we learn more about the world.

Foreign languages are among my favorites, and I have specialized in teaching Latin, Italian, and Japanese. As a geologist, I am also profoundly interested in the sciences. When I teach I like to understand where my students are coming from, what really inspires them, and help them to enjoy and love what they want to learn. For me, learning is always fun, so whether you like to study or you are having trouble motivating yourself to concentrate, together we will discover the joy and fun in what you are studying.

He's very competent, friendly and humble. He knows a lot of languages at a high level and he also can teach them (this last one isn't obvious).

M. Marie Roche conducted on the campus of U Mass eight seminars--open to all--on two of Shakespeare's history plays, King John and Richard II. Neither play is popular with modern Shakespeare-going audiences. But she accomplished the nearly impossible--making both plays compelling and relevant by her selection of background documents and themes. I hope that TakeLessons can provide an adequate platform for her level of sophistication.

About Clare
After two years working as a translator/interpreter for a local government office in Kochi, Japan, I moved back to the US last year. Since then, I have been a private teacher of Japanese for all ages, currently from age 7 to mid-40s. I love to be a witness when my students suddenly "get" something new we've been working on for a while. Japanese is a fascinating, beautiful, and complicated language, and it's exciting to be a partner in my students' achievements and success!

I am highly experienced in teaching middle school and high school age students--including my own kids, whom I homeschool. My first visit to Japan was a semester study abroad in my senior year of high school, so I can give ample advice to students who are preparing to go to Japan. Along with my on-the-ground experience living and working in Japan in a fast-paced and hig
h-stakes environment, I hold an M.A. in Japanese and N1 (highest level) certification on the Japanese Language Proficiency Test. Native Japanese speakers have complimented me on my native-like pronunciation and syntax.

Contact me any time for more information or to set up your first lessons!

Checked in with my daughter after her first lesson with Clare. Her succinct, yet on point response..."It went well!!!" I'll take that as a strong like for Clare. Looking forward to see what these two do over the summer.

About Micah
Hi! I'm Micah, and I'm passionate about making, writing, analyzing, and teaching music. I graduated with high honors in music from Haverford College, where I studied music theory, violin performance, choral singing, and composition. I completed a Master's degree at Harvard University in music; I studied the place of music in history and culture, and continued to study music theory and analysis.

What I especially love, however, is making connections with the music you or I enjoy. When I teach music theory, I always try to bring the focus back to that spark that makes the music so exciting in the first place. I also study folk music, and teach fiddle ā€“ I love that music like this is able to connect with so many people in ways that extend beyond the concert hall, and most of all let everyone have fun!

Mr Yoshi is an amazing teacher! Although I was very nervous, he carefully explained things and encouraged me. He wrote everything, clearly, so I could study later and made sure I understood the meaning behind the words and the reasons those phrases were used, in what context and to whom. I'm extremely happy that I've taken lessons from him. Thank you Mr Yoshi and Take Lessons! I'm even more dedicated to learning Japanese now!

About Lisa
I have been signing for most of my life. Growing up I lived in an area with many deaf children and so as a result I learned sign language. As an adult I went through a 2 year Interpreter Training Program. I then became a certified Interpreter in the state of Michigan.

When my husband and I moved to Portland, OR I shifted my focus to teaching ASL. I have taught students of differing levels and age ranges and can easily adapt to your skill level and reasons for learning the language. I am also able to teach you about deaf history, culture, interpreting and ASL Linguistics if you are interested.

I'm passionate about teaching and learning languages. I am currently learning 2 languages on my own. I know what it is like to learn a new language as an adult and I have learned many great ways of harnessing the knowledge that we have as adults
, about ourselves and learning in general, to make learning ASL easier and more enjoyable for my students.
