About Mona

I'm an active flutist and Japanese enthusiast currently living in Seattle, WA! I hold degrees in Flute Performance from New England Conservatory and the University of Washington, and will continue my studies on Fulbright at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, Finland this fall. I believe that learning music should be fun and inspiring, but that 95% of artistry is simply hard work! I therefore create a positive and encouraging environment for all of my students, while still setting challenging goals. Additionally, I tailor my teaching to fit each student’s needs so that learning potential can be maximized. Stylistic choices in musical expression/phrasing are encouraged through the incorporation of music theory, music history, and ear training skills into lessons. I also believe that body awareness is important, and will include stretches and

practice methods into each lesson, so students can practice efficiently and prevent injuries!

I grew up speaking both Japanese and English and welcome beginning Japanese students! Students and I work out of the Genki I, Genki II, and the Tobira textbooks. Japanese lessons focus on reading, writing, and speaking standard Japanese at the conversational level.

Maggie is an excellent violist and instructor. She inspires you, helps you learn the correct techniques, and her lessons are fun. I'm a beginner and we were playing duets. If you have a difficulty, she is very helpful. My life is very rich taking viola lessons.

Abby Y.

About Abby

I'm a marketing communication student from Beijing, China.
I've been learning English for 15 years, and I came to the US during high school for a cultural exchange program. I think the immersive environment of a foreign language is crucial to the speed and effect of the learning progress. Even though it's not that easy to accomplish in another country, I still try to provide appropriate context to create an environment close to the native scenes. Personally I also study Korean and Spanish, which gives me a perspective on how to learn languages that from different language families, and to study at different ages.
I've been volunteering for the same cultural exchange organization for 8 years, during which time I came to contact with students from different continents and native languages.
I fully understand the obstacles of easing into M

andarin Chinese language system as beginners, getting comfortable with the grammar frame as intermediate learners, as well as the advanced written and spoken skills desired by advanced learners (as a Beijinger, I speak Standard Chinese aka Putonghua).

"As a true beginner, I had no clue as to where to begin in my journey of learning Korean. Youngju has been wonderful in teaching Korean. In two short les
sons I was able to go from nothing to actually reading in Korean. I had an emergency pop up and she rescheduled my lesson so that I would not miss a lesson. She uses visuals so that I can understand."

"Joneide is a wonderful and professional Portuguese language instructor. I have taken the one on one class with her online for over a year. She was very q

She takes great interest in exploiting the student's potential and constantly comes up with new fun but very challenging lessons. I have traveled on business to Brazil and thanks to her I was able to feel confidence during my meetings. I would recommend her to anyone that is trying to learn Portuguese."
