I've been playing with classical ensembles and rock bands since 2001. Even though I started on classical trombone and rock guitar, I have come to expand my repertoire to a variety of instruments and genres. During my time in college I performed with the University choir, orchestra, and band. I also have organized, wrote/arranged for, and performed with a variety of bands in my home state of New Mexico, as well as Japan, and the San Francisco Bay Area.
Since 2006 I have been an active teacher. This profession has taken me everywhere from working with classical guitar cla
sses in New Mexico high schools to Elementary students in Japan to a variety of private students of various musical instruments and genres everywhere I've been. Since relocating to the Bay Area in 2010, I've had the pleasure of working with lots of great students from kids to adults with a wide range of ambitions. Since 2012 I've been running my own full time studio.
Philosophy of Learning
Lessons are generally designed to work towards giving students the tools to accomplish their goals and become increasingly independent over time. While all students will study similar fundamentals regarding technique, theory, and performance, every lesson is as different as every person. What kind of music do you want to make? I'll tell you what you need to do to get there, and help you take the steps to achieve your aspirations. It's really important to know though that everyone makes their own experience. The process of learning music involves you learning as much about your own mind and body as it does any external concepts, so please keep in mind only you can move yourself forward.
I also love to help students put together a song, record, and produce it for them so that they can have a recording to share with their friends and family.
I also hold events for my students. (Check out our pictures and videos below!) Younger students have opportunities to perform for friends and family at my studio every few months. Adult students also occasionally have events where they get a chance to get together and play music as well.
Aside from in-studio lessons, students also have the option to sign up for online lessons via Skype. (*Online lessons offered during different times than in-studio lessons.)
*Unfortunately due to scheduling issues, I'm not currently accepting students for bi-weekly lessons. I can do regular weekly lessons, or occasional drop-in lessons, but bi-weekly appointments make it really hard for me to give the best scheduled times to my existing weekly students. I'm sorry for the inconvenience.
My studio is equipped with:
*A P.A. System
*Vocal and instrument microphones
*Guitars, Basses, Ukulele, Banjos, etc
*Two guitar amps and a bass amp
*Various percussion including a fully equipped acoustic drum set
*A Roland V-Drums electronic drum set
*An electric piano console and Yamaha organ
*A MicroKorg Synthesizer
*A Tuba, Trombone, Cornet, Saxophone, and Flute
*An extensive physical and virtual music library
*A recording system that students are not only welcome to use but encouraged to
*HD Webcam and condenser microphone for high fidelity online lessons via Skype
Jesse has given directions on how to successfully become a better musician. His approach and explanation on musical theories was much more understandable than what I was previously reading. Overall, I found the lessons to be very usefull.

Jesse is very friendly and a fun teacher to be around.
During my undergraduate studies, I worked as a president of SUNY Albany Japanese Student Association and also worked as a TA for Japanese 101 classes, and I absolutely love to teach languages! I understand it is often very hard to find a language tutor outside of the spoken community, and I hope to provide you with the opportunity to be exposed to authentic media sources to acquire natural fluency. Hope to hear from you soon!
はじめまして & thank you for taking a moment to check out my profile! I'm originally from Tokyo Japan, and I moved to NY with my family during high school. I've completed Master's degrees in Language Education & Communication, and Bachelor's Degrees in Music Performance and Political Science. I enjoyed organizing and running language study groups in college, and experienced working as a Japanese TA for several semesters. I LOVE to teach in general, whether it's music or languages, and I personalize most of my teaching materials for individual student. Let me know what YOUR unique short/long-term goals are, along with interest topics, and we'll work it out! Thanks again, and I'm excited to hear from you!
Hikaru is down to earth, conversational and a great teacher. I have already learned so much from her. I can't say enough good things about her. If you make time to study on your own, in conjunction with her lessons you'll be picking up the language in no time at all!

My daughter loves her instructor and was very happy with her.
I'm a native Japanese speaker here to help you learn Japanese. My aim is to help you gain not only the Japanese skills but also the cultural awareness to help you navigate in situations in which you need to use Japanese. I approach my lessons with customization that is only possible in private teaching. I teach students of all ages who are able to take at least 6 months of my lessons. I look forward to making contribution to your learning.
My name is Taro, and I am a Japanese teacher from Kobe, Japan. I first started teaching Japanese when the mother of a high school student reached out to me to help him learn Japanese. I have been teaching the language since then to men and women of all ages.
Japanese is a language that emphasizes formality which is reflected in Japanese culture that values civility and order. Learning Japanese properly enables you to understand how Japanese people think and act, which helps you to enjoy Japan fully when you visit the country.
My job is to help you learn the language the right way so you can get to the next level. In order to do so, I use curated material and utilize technology to maximize your learning process.
I look forward to working with you, and I am excited to help you realize your goal.
Prior to the beginning of my lessons with Taro, I had little to no knowledge of Japanese, so I took weekly lessons for Japanese lessons for a little over half a year, and I am proud to say that I feel confident in my understanding of the basics in Japanese grammar and knowledge. He was excellent in adapting to my learning goals and ensuring that I received what I expected from every lesson. I was able to retain much of what we went over because the lessons effectively covered material that I can relate to my personal life. Taro is definitely my favorite teacher since he goes the extra mile and genuinely cares about his students as well as their goals. If you're thinking of beginning lessons and aren't sure where to start, Taro is the perfect teacher for guiding you to identify and reach your learning goals, whether you're a beginner or have moderate experience with Japanese!

I have been taking Japanese lessons with Taro Sensei for about 5 months. He is a very patient and organized instructor. He designs the teaching material based on my specific level and goals. I enjoy the fun conversation with him during every lesson. My Japanese skill has improved gradually as time goes by. Thank you Taro Sensei.
Initially I like to evaluate the student's current comprehension level (regardless of years studied) to better select the appropriate starting point. From there, if there is a specific subject matter or course work/syllabus for a class that needs to be followed, I can tailor lessons to fit those needs. Throughout lessons, I like to bring in elements such as cartoons, newspapers, movie clips, etc. to aid in understanding everyday usage & make learning practical and pertinent to the student.
About Kenji Luis
I grew up speaking English, Portuguese & Japanese in a multilingual family and from a young age developed a strong affinity & penchant for languages. I attended an English-Portuguese Bilingual school through 6th grade and studied Japanese 4 years in high school, along with weekend Japanese school classes. In college I went on to major in International Relations & Diplomacy with a concentration in French studies, also honing my Spanish that I had picked up along the way (with Romance Languages, I have a very easy time of language absorption). I've gone on to work for international companies wherein my language skills have been highly sought after, translating & communicating often in all my language strengths.
Over the past five years I have taught Japanese to over 50 students from all over the world. I am willing to teach students of all ages. Beginner to advanced speakers welcome!
I was born and raised in Japan. Over the past five years I have taught Japanese to over 50 students from all over the world. I am willing to teach students of all ages. Beginner to advanced speakers welcome. If you want to learn Japanese, I can teach you online. It's very easy and fun!
This is only the second online lesson that I've ever had in Japanese. My first review that I gave to my former teacher was five stars. This one though, If I can give more than that I would but unfortunately five stars is the limit. Whoever is taking, or considering taking Japanese lessons with Aimi wont be disappointed. I'm in my 50's and Aimi would do anything to make sure that I would grasp the material. I'm 100 percent sure that she is equally outstanding teacher with younger students...And you, whoever you might be out there reading this review and willing to try learning Japaneses, go ahead and schedule a lesson with her; whether you are adult or young I'm confident Aimie will be the perfect fit.

Aimi is a great instructor. She beings a curriculum and recommended resources to help you tackle the goal of learning a new language. I've had to reschedule a few classes, and she responds to my emails quickly and accommodates my schedule changes when able! I highly recommend her as a Japanese teacher!

Three Japanese lessons provided, each tailored to maximize student's abilities according to their goals. I recommend the 45-minute lesson to beginner and intermediate level students.
◆45-minute lesson: All in one comprehensive lesson with 15-20 minutes speaking plus listening and reading, new vocabulary and grammar.
◆30-minute lesson: Speaking practice plus one activity from listening, reading, or grammar, idioms your choice.
Hi, everyone! I am Naoko. I live in the upper New York state since 2010 and teach Japanese online and in-person. I used to work at a trading company in the semiconductor industry in Japan. Also, I have three years' experience of working in the bridal company. These experiences working in the two different fields are very valuable and I acquired much knowledge and business skills. I like traveling, eating authentic food and talking with foreign people. I have been to Eastern Europe, Asia, Oceania, Canada, Bahamas, Maldives. I currently teach Japanese online and in the local area around Upstate New York. I have students from various occupations like lawyers, professors, engineers, and doctors. Also, I teach young Japanese children who are developing their literacy and speaking skills, teenage students being homeschooled, and college studen
ts working on JLPT preparation or their graduate theses. Furthermore, I help businessmen and women who are trying to apply for job opportunities in Japan and who want to learn Business Japanese as relates to the honorific system, how to write formal emails, conversation on the telephone, and useful phrases for business situations. My lessons are full of originality and are designed to match your level and meet your goals. For beginning students, I focus on teaching grammar first and using that grammar to practice making short sentences. For the middle and advanced levels students, we will work together to strengthen your vocabulary, listening and reading skills. Also, they write composition homework every time, and we correct mistakes together in the next lesson. Advanced level students discuss one or two news articles or themes which you decide. Let's start learning Japanese with me. I look forward to seeing you soon!
Very professional and very good teacher. I am looking forward to learning Japanese with her.

Naoko-san is definitely a 5 star instructor for learning Japanese! I would highly recommend her classes, especially for beginners like myself. She breaks everything down in easy to understand ways & makes each lesson a lot of fun. I very much look forward to continue learning about Japanese language & culture with her!
As a native Japanese speaker, who has spent the last 30 years in the United States, I understand the structural and grammatical differences in the two languages. This gives me both the teacher’s and the student’s perspectives, which I find valuable as a language instructor.
I have taught Japanese to college students and adults, using beginning Japanese textbooks, and I am most comfortable teaching high school/college students and adults. I can also teach conversational Japanese and/or customize the lesson to meet each student’s particular goals and needs.
Send me a message to find out if we are a good match!
Born and raised in Japan, I moved to the United States in the 80's to pursue the goal of obtaining a library degree. Fast forward almost 30 years, I now live in Western New York, working in a local school district. In the past 30 years, I have worked as a librarian, an English instructor in Japan, and a school administrative assistant. I have also taught Japanese to college students and adults in my free time, and when I become an empty nester this summer, would love to dedicate more time teaching the language and customs of my native country. I can help you with homework, conversational Japanese, and more - just contact me and we can find out if we are a good match!
I've enjoyed working with Rie 先生. My boyfriend and I have an upcoming trip to Japan and these lessons help me to be more confident in being able to navigate around. I enjoy the feedback because it not only highlights what I can improve on, but it also shows there are concepts I'm actually retaining. Learning Japanese feels natural with her! ありがとうございます!

She is amazing! The first lesson was very constructive and it was very easy to find what level I was at and what I needed to practice.
I lived in Hiroshima, Japan for two years. Before I left, I simply wanted a teacher to offer common phrases and cultural tips. If you plan to move to Japan or visit Japan I can help. I'll teach you basic phrases, important etiquette, and fun cultural facts that Japanese residents know but you don't (yet!!!).
Need help in Japanese class? I speak conversational Japanese. I read and write 200 kanji, hiragana, and katakana. Frankly, I enjoy studying the language and want to help you ace the class.
I am a Japanese teacher and ESL teacher currently working on my masters in Education. I lived in Japan from March of 2017 though March of 2019 where I taught in the Japanese public school system.
I prepare students to travel to Japan for business, educational, or professional purposes. To these students I teach specific phrases and cultural etiquette. I also teach beginner to intermediate-level Japanese to students interested in the language for any purpose.
Whether you plan a trip to Japan, are currently enrolled in Japanese classes and need a tutor, or simply find the language fascinating (like I do), I can provide you with the strategies and lessons necessary to grow your vocabulary and comprehension.
I'm preparing for an extended trip to Japan, and I really wanted some in person help to make sure I didn't totally flounder once I got there. Amy was a super friendly and super patient teacher. I never felt uncomfortable practicing or asking for help multiple times on things that I wasn't getting. I would absolutely recommend Amy to anybody trying to learn Japanese.
