As a highly trained classical singer I have studied Italian for many years. Learn basic vocabulary and diction. These lessons can be especially tailored to singers.

About Heather
Hi! I'm Heather and I have been teaching private music lessons since 2008. I grew up on the stage! My mother was my first singing and piano teacher and from a young age I have been involved in acting, dancing, music theatre, oratorio, and opera! I went to the Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins University and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro where I earned a Bachelor of Music degree in Vocal Performance. I am passionate about giving my students the gift of self-expression through music while learning good technique and incorporating music YOU are interested in.

***Frequently Asked Questions***
What is your availability?
Just select a subject and a lesson location in the upper righthand corner above and you can see my availability!

What do lessons cost?
30 minutes $25
45 minutes $35
60 minutes $45

How
often should we meet and for how long?
I recommend lessons once per week. 30 minute lessons are good for beginning piano students. 45 minute lessons are ideal for singers and intermediate piano students. 60 minute lessons are appropriate for advanced students interested in studying lots of repertoire or for singers who are having a particularly difficult time with ear training.

What do you do in lessons?
To learn what you would be doing in a lesson just select a subject in blue under "Heather Teaches" at the top of this page for a description of how each lesson works in that subject.

I want to study piano, do I have to have a real piano?
No, you don't have to have a real piano but you do need at least a keyboard, preferably one that gets louder or softer depending how hard you hit a key, has at least 61 keys, and has a sustain pedal.

Do you help singers who want to learn rap, metal, or some other non-conventional style of singing?
Yes, I have actually worked with some metal bands before! Even if you are using something like screaming you can use it in a way that hurts your voice less. I love to apply good technique to styles like that.

***Student/Parent-Teacher Agreement***
If you choose to book through me here are the details of what you can expect from me and what I will expect from you.

STUDENT EXPECTATIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES
1: Schedule 10-30 minutes of practice each day for at least five days per week. Your teacher will give you a specific minutes goal based on your age and level of study.

2: Bring you assignment book to each lesson and complete all assignments.

3: Arrive promptly at your lesson time. You reserve the time slot, not the number of minutes.

4: Pianists’ fingernails should be kept trim. When playing with curved fingers, the nails should not click.

5: No gum, food, or drinks during lessons (water bottles are permitted).

6: Online students are responsible for printing assignments that your teacher sends you online. Online singers need to have a way to play karaoke tracks while being logged in to the TakeLessons classroom.

7: Please turn all cell phones to silent during the lesson. Online students are not allowed to surf the web during their lessons.

PARENT/GUARDIAN EXPECTATIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES
1: Support the fulfillment of your child’s responsibilities by consistently bringing your child to lessons, rehearsals, and performances and remind your child of daily practice and help them to schedule this practice time in their daily routine.

2: Communicate with the teacher about any questions or concerns you have. I want to meet your expectations, as well as your child’s, and I encourage feedback.

3: Provide an acceptable instrument for practice. Pianists: an acoustic piano is recommended, however, good electronic instruments that are full size, have a sustain pedal, and are capable of dynamics (the ability to control the volume of the sound through the touch of the performer) are also acceptable. Singers: a device for recording lessons (optional) and a keyboard, pitch pipe, or pitch pipe phone app.

4: Parents/guardians may sit-in on lessons only if they do not disturb them. Please, no talking at all. You may wait in the car or run an errand if you prefer. The teacher reserves the right to no longer allow a parent/guardian to sit in on a lesson should their behavior be deemed a habitual distraction for the student.

TEACHER PLEDGE
1: To provide a tailored curriculum to meet student’s individual needs and goals.

2: To clearly communicate short-term and long-term goals.

3: To encourage a feeling of success at each student’s individual rate of learning.

4: To report the student’s progress to the parent/guardian if applicable and listen to any concerns and answer any questions of the parent/guardian and student if applicable.

5: To devote the entire lesson time to the student. I am a stay-at-home mom and occasionally I may need to attend to my child. In the rare circumstance that your lesson is interrupted, I will offer you make-up time at the end of the lesson or at a time that is most convenient for you.

STUDENT CANCELLATIONS OR ABSENCES: If given 24 hours notice, I will allow for a makeup lesson or cancellation. If I am not notified within 24 hours a lesson credit will be used regardless of whether or not the student attends.

TEACHER ABSENCES: All lessons missed as a result of the teacher canceling will be made up at a convenient time or credited to the next lesson.

TUITION: Lesson credits must be purchased through TakeLessons.com before the scheduled lesson can be taught.

PERSONAL LIABILITY: The teacher is not responsible for any injuries, loss or theft occurring on the teacher’s personal property. Children should not be left at the studio/home unattended. The teacher cannot be held responsible for the safety of the student outside of their lesson time, or the safety of any family members/friends that may accompany the student to lessons.

STUDENT TERMINATION: Students and parents are permitted five initial lessons to decide if the lessons are a good student-teacher fit. If more lessons are purchase after the initial five lessons, lessons should be seen as an on-going commitment. If a student chooses to terminate lessons (after the introductory five-lesson period), the parent/guardian or adult student must inform the studio with a 30-day notice. The student is responsible for purchasing the last month’s lessons whether they choose to use the lesson credits or not.

TEACHER-INITIATED TERMINATION: Lessons may be terminated for unpaid tuition, for repeated missed lessons, or for consistently late or unreturned phone calls, texts, or e-mails. The teacher reserves the right to terminate lessons at her own discretion.

I have been a teacher for more than 20 years, teaching various subjects to students of all ages. I studied Italian first in high school; then throughout my college years. I've become proficient in it and I now tutor students in NYC public schools (primarily high school) that struggle with the language. I am patient, thorough and I try to make it fun and interesting for the students who often come to me quite frustrated initially.

About Anne-Marie
Hi, I'm Anne-Marie and I love to teach! I have been teaching for over 25 years and whether the subject is English, Music, College Prep or Italian, I love helping students reach their goals. I work hard to leave my students enlightened, encouraged and empowered. I have high standards and I really like to challenge students to achieve their full potential, but I also try to make the process interesting, engaging and fun. I'm patient, easygoing and I enjoy working with students of all ages and backgrounds. I always strive to get to know my students (and their needs) very well. Then I customize lessons according to need, aptitude and goals. One of the best parts of teaching for me is meeting and connecting with new people, and making a difference in their lives, so I really look forward to meeting and working with you!

Hi Future Students,

If you love the Italian culture and would like to learn how to speak Italian, I'm your girl!! I studied for 4 years in college and moved there for some time. I can help you with your hw and I can also help you, if you just want to learn some basic phrases to get around.

About Deborah
I have so many different things I teach. If you are looking for a voice teacher, I definitely can be of help. I have been singing all of my life. I sing in many different genres like pop, gospel, R&B, and classical. I can even help if you want to be an opera singer, as I am studying to be one myself at the Aaron Copland of Music. First things we would start to do is learn how to breathe. After the student understands good breath, then we will apply it to actual singing.

I also teach Italian, and have taught the language for 3 years in a private school. I lived in Italy for a while and I just love the language. If anyone needs a tutor, I can help!

I also teach art history, and art as far as drawing and painting. So if any parent wants for their child learn how to express themselves through painting or drawing, I can do that as well!!

I love to do all of these things, as I have a great passion for them! I hope I can inspire someone else.

Deborah's expertise and professionalism are a pleasant surprise when you consider how young she is. I have met teachers that are decades older than her who do not have the ability to accurately tell you exactly what you are doing wrong or how you can correct it. You hear a lot of, "just keep practicing and it will sort itself out" from other instructors, and this could cause you to develop bad habits that could affect your voice. Deborah is the opposite of that.

She pinpoints exactly what I am doing wrong during my lesson and offers suggestions on how to correct it going forward. I appreciate that because if your instructor doesn't tell you, your audience will. And you might not like how they say it. I am there to go beyond just singing in the shower, and her constructive criticism only makes me better. She is also polite when she corrects you, she's not cracking the whip.

She focuses immediately on different techniques that will help you improve your voice so that you can PROGRESS, instead of just banging out scales on the piano lesson after lesson and overlooking mistakes a student may make like some instructors do. I hate to be this blunt, but there are some instructors I have met in the past who do just that (none of them are from takelessons) to me it shows a devotion to the art and a commitment to bringing out the best voice that you have she wants you to be as good as her! To me no one could ask for any more than that in a voice instructor. I wholeheartedly recommend her to anyone looking for a teacher.

Just as she promise ;work on breathing first, usually I like some time go by before I make a comment but the first introduction went so well, I have a positive outlook of my future practice. I have my questions answer and I also understand them as well. I am sure I have more and have confidence they will be answer....

Being a native Italian and having lived in Rome for over 30 years gives me the necessary knowledge to know what is needed in order to learn the Italian language and get deeper into the Italian culture. Also having over 20 years of teaching experience allows me to tailor my knowledge to the need of every particular student. I really enjoy to transfer my knowledge and solve the unique problems that every student encounter during their path.

About Andrea
Bassist and composer Andrea Veneziani performs extensively within the improvised music scene, across a broad spectrum of genres. His instrumental tone, sensitivity and imagination, and melodic approach to a supposedly clumsy instrument brought him to perform and record with many established musicians. Based in New York City, his work as an instrumentalist and composer can be regularly heard at the top jazz clubs in the city and around the globe.

As a current faculty member of the New York Jazz Workshop, Andrea Veneziani is a dedicated educator. He has taught master classes at the National Institute of Music and the National University of Costa Rica, at the Boğaziçi University in Istanbul, Turkey and at the Olav Duun Videregående Skole in Namsos, Norway. Learn italian in New Orleans or online!
I'm a native speaker, born and raised in Italy, where I got my BA and MA in Foreign Languages. I lived abroad for a while, and I'm currently a PhD student in New Orleans.
I will help you learn anything you need in italian: from simple conversation, to advanced grammar or pronounciation, all levels are welcome! I'd be also happy to introduce you to italian culture and litterature if that interests you.

About Giorgia
I'm an italian girl, I was born in Rome where I lived till the age of 19.
I then moved to a smaller town named Viterbo (you should totally google it, it's so pretty!) where I attended college. I graduated with my BA in 2014 and my MA in 2016. I studied Foreign Languages (French and German, but I'm also fluent in English, and speak good enough Spanish. I like to brag).

During my time in college I traveled a lot and got a chance to study abroad, first in Germany, then France, and I did an internship in Belgium. So much fun!
I moved to Las Vegas in 2016, got addicted to gambling so I had to leave (I'm kidding, I can't even play poker), and recently moved to the beautiful city of New Orleans where I'm doing my PhD in French Studies.

In case this wasn't clear, I am passsionate about languages, cultures, and literature!
In college I wa
s part of a language exchange program, so I taught Italian to many american college students, and got to practice my English and Spanish with them as well. I did the same while I was in Germany, I gave Italian conversation lessons in exchange for German. So no matter what your language background is, I can help you learning Italian the best way for you! Of course that implies letting you know that no italian knows what Alfredo sauce is, and that if you order a Pepperoni in Italy you will get a pizza topped with bell peppers, so be prepared to reconsider your beliefs!

If you are already a pro and just need some practice, I'd be happy to give pure conversation lessons.
I love traveling, going to the gym, I am a tv show-junkie, I like to read, to watch movies, to cook, etc. We can talk about all this and about anything you like or want to practice on!

Ciao! Sono Lorena! I am a native Italian speaker. I am from Treviso, a beautiful town located near Venice. I would like to help you learn this beautiful language in a fun way. Tell me your goals and I can tailor the class according to them. Maybe you want to learn some basic words to get around Italy for an upcoming holiday or perhaps you study it years ago and you would like to improve it. Maybe you want to learn some words and phrases to impress your date. Or perhaps you like a particular Italian song and you would like to understand the meaning and learn how to sing it!

About Lorena
Ciao! I am a native Italian living in the USA for several years now.
My background is in foreign languages and I love traveling and meeting new people. I studied English and French in Italy before spending two years in England working and studying to perfectionate English where I also learned conversational Spanish.
Once in the USA I started working in the information technology field for a company that had a branch in Italy. I had to assist, translate and teach different materials in Italian and I also did some freelancing tutoring.
I have three children and I also speak and teach Italian to them only. It has been fun to see them being comfortable in speaking Italian when we go to Italy. I try to travel to Italy at least once a year.

My other passion is cooking and baking. I was lucky that I grow up with both my parents
as excellent cooks. We had a vegetable garden, fruit trees and livestocks so most of the ingredients were fresh. I started cooking a lot when I moved to USA as I missed the Italian dishes very much and I realized my only connection to my country was via the food.

I also have a love for fashion! Growing up in Italy means being surrounded by beauty everywhere.. the marvelous architecture and art, the language and music, the beautiful landscapes, the fruits of nature and the fashion! I believe because of this most Italians develop a sense of style. When I moved here I realized how much harder was to find unique clothes and accessories so I enjoy the challenge to put together outfits with what I have available.

After you have experienced a cooking lesson with Lorena you will feel like you have visited Venice Italy.
Her birth place. Lorena will share simple, healthy recipes you will use for a lifetime. I learned so much from her and I'm already a glorified chef. Her signature dishes with all the Venetian secrets can be revealed in her kitchen or yours. She's a very good listener and will adapt to what your family likes to eat. I will continue my lessons after the New Year... wanting to pare wine with the food . Another hidden talent .thank you Lorena
