Using books and online materials, I guide students through grammatical rules, vocabulary and pronunciation, using cultural examples as illustration. I'll buy whichever books are the most relevant to a student's level, age, and needs, and also ask my student to buy the book too. Some of these books can be used without a private teacher, in any case! I learned German grammar with a very strict teacher, many years ago, and she was right to be strict: grammar is the backbone of the German language. I collaborate with my German sister, who lives in Germany.
I grew up in the German part of Switzerland. I was exposed to the language throughout my schooling years. In my professional life as a doctor's assistant and later CEO assistant I needed to communicate daily in the German language. I studied business for 3 years. Over the last 3 years I have taught numerous people German. Some only need a little guidance, others keep on coming back to master more fluent conversation. I'm flexible with my time and willing to adapt to my students' needs.
What is my approach? First of all, I listen carefully, very carefully. I believe it is important for an excellent job to know precisely what my client wants to accomplish. Understanding this is the prerequisite to giving good advice, guidance, and then, of course, a plan, a kind of strategy to follow to reach these goals. There will be a permanent interaction between my client and myself to monitor the progress, eventually speed up the tempo or, if necessary, slow down. There is no dogma; there is only one main criterion: success.
I first started learning German due to a serendipitous move to Oklahoma following my junior year of high school. I have since really grown to love the German language and ended up getting a BA in German Studies (jointly with a BA in Spanish). I really love German literature, whether it's Goethe or Michael Ende, and I really enjoy Beethoven, Mozart, Bach, Händel, and also Lieder (Shubert's "Erlkönig" being my favorite). I am also a huge fan of Die Prinzen. I consider myself an expert in grammar-related topics (including verb conjugation, cases, Konjunktiv I and II, etc.) but am also willing to teach vocabulary, pronunciation, and other topics.
I am a native German speaker and I teach German online and in person. I use a fun story book series that has been written in German for English native speakers (beginners as well as advanced students) to introduce new vocabulary and grammar. I will add grammar theory and exercises as needed. My teaching style is flexible and your input is very welcome! Don’t hesitate to suggest a topic of your interest. I have covered many varied topics upon request (the news, music, human anatomy,….). I also assist students with their assignments, prepare them for tests and help them improve their grades. I aim to quickly identify what the student is struggling with, and look for alternative ways to explain the topic.
Guten Tag! I completed my master's degree in linguistics at the Free University of Berlin and spent a total of over four years in Germany. Whenever I speak with natives, they tell me that my German is excellent, practically without accent! I would love to help students who are just getting started with German or who are already moving into the conversational level. I also have a lot of great German language learning materials that could be incorporated into our lessons. Ich freue mich darauf Sie kennenzulernen! (I look forward to getting to know you!)
What a beautiful language German is! No wonder there's so many famous German poets, playwrites and composers! And actually German is also very much used in todays international business world! Whether you want to get better grades in school or you just want to be able to have a simple conversation on vacation or apply with a German company, as a native speaker I can help you reach your goals!
