About Kristen
My name is Kristen! I am an instructor in the San Diego area. I work from my home studio with students of all ages.

I have a Bachelor of Arts in Music, Voice Primary, Piano Secondary. I also have obtained my Masters in Music Education from Boston University. I have also received my credential for elementary education and music education.

***Music Students***
I teach students not only how to sing, but also how to perform. This will benefit all students who are looking to audition for a musical, or are interested in performing in front of an audience.

I also teach students how to read music and understand basic music theory. This will benefit students who want to further their musical knowledge.

I believe that it is important for music students to learn how to be true musicians. For this reason I have created a student ce
ntered curriculum that includes a variety of learning objectives including: vocal and breathing technique, improvisation, listening and interpreting, student song selection, performance, music theory, and community musical involvement.

All students who work with me have their own personalized lesson plans. Together we work towards achieving the student's individual goals. I teach my students the skills to become successful.

***Elementary Multi Subject Tutoring***

I am credentialed to teach students K-6 with an elementary multi subject credential.

All students who work with me have their own personalized lesson plans. Together we work towards achieving the student's individual goals. I teach my students the skills to become successful.

This lesson was for my 15 yo daughter. Kristen was very organized and got right to work discovering my daughter's range, teaching her how to breathe properly, showing her warm-up exercises and singing a few songs they will be working on together. It was a very productive session and Kristen was very interested in keeping the lesson fun as well. A good balance of structure and play that challenges the student while keeping her engaged and eager to practice on her own. Great first lesson, and my daughter is looking forward to the next one!

Kristen is SO helpful. I've only taken a few classes so far and my vocal abilities and confidence behind a microphone have improved drastically. I started singing late -- at age 27 -- and without much instruction so it has been a difficult process on a steep learning curve so far (the past two years). Kristen punts me farther up that curve every time we meet :).

She is structured but not rigid, super knowledgeable and very professional. Highly recommend her!

Lessons are tailored to the individual student's initial abilities. In all genres of music, it is important to breathe well, have breath support, communicate the emotion and character of the song, and eliminate vocal bad habits. These issues are different for everyone.

I teach a classical Italian technique of breath support and beautiful tone, and these techniques can be applied to all musical styles.

The student will be assigned and choose songs to learn and work on as we incorporate the techniques into the songs and vocal exercises.

Piano lessons and Italian lessons are also available from ages 4 and up. Piano lessons include music theory and recital participation. Voice lessons include recital participation. Italian lessons are available at my location, your location or online.

About Trevor
Every musician was first and foremost a fan of music. My love of
music began when my mother took me to a performance of Beethoven's
fifth symphony when, coincidentally, I was five. From that point, I
started fervently listening to my mother's records (those are the
huge, black monstrosities that people in the pre-historic used in
place of iPods), followed closely by my father's CD collection.
After a while, this ravenous desire of to know and feel music moved
me to play an instrument. After a couple of false starts with the
drums and violin, I found my true musical calling: the guitar.

On January 25th 1995, on a whim, I began playing the
guitar, and I have yet to put it down. Along the way I've picked up
a number of friends for my guitar, including the bass, the lute, the
sitar and, once again, the drums. After on
ly a few years of
practice, I started playing professionally, in bands and solo guitar.
Live playing experience, I believe, is the most important experience
that any musician can have, in that, the most important part of music
is how it sounds, and playing in front of people is the quickest way
to learn how to play effectively. And this is what I teach; how to
be a musician, not just a technician.

*** Lesson Details ***
A student can expect a curriculum tailor-made to their needs and personality. Every person learns differently and this is an important distinction in my teaching style. Some students need a strong hand to keep them working, others need to find many different ways to the same conclusion to keep them focused, while still others need a laid-back friend in order to accept knowledge.

I stress rhythmic literacy, for, as my jazz teacher always said, "rhythm is king." If composition is important to you, then we'll focus on music theory, but if you're just wanting to learn how to play some fun rock tunes with your friends on the weekends, we can do that as well. As I stated before, we'll get you playing in front of people in no time.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I provide an amplifier, a loner guitar (if needed), staff and/or tablature paper, metronome, pens and paper for the lessons.

*** Specialties ***
Music theory and composition, guitar, bass, lute, beginner to intermediate piano
Classical, shred, blues, and rock guitar; renaissance lute; blues, rock and slap bass; composition of many styles; world music.

I would think the first lesson is always the hardest to start since as an instructor you don’t know what skill level you will be teaching. Trevor started the class asking what I wanted to accomplish and ended with lots of practice lessons for me to complete. Looking forward to more classes with him.

Tania is a very easy going teacher. This helps the student remain relaxed during those difficult parts of the lesson. When it gets challenging for the student, it is important that no judgement be conveyed by the instructor. Only praise. I really appreciate this because learning a new language can be trying. I have been a language teacher for more than 24 years. I have a B.A. in English Language and Literature and my curriculum includes several subjects related to Spanish grammar, composition, phonetics and literature, so apart from being my native language (I am Cuban) I have the necessary academic knowledge to teach Spanish to speakers of other languages.

I have worked mainly with adults in colleges and language schools. At the university level I worked with students from different professional interests, so I am familiar with teaching the language for specific academic skills. I have also tutored individual adults and teenagers. At present I am also teaching children in an after school program.

In my teaching I favor the communicative approach with meaningful exchanges and with a solid foundation on the formal aspects of the langua
ge too. I also pay attention to individual needs so that students can progress at their own pace.

At the intermediate and advanced levels I favor the use of meaningful discussions and debate about updated issues, so that the students can learn how to express their true opinions and ideas properly in different contexts.

I believe in fostering a friendly atmosphere and making the teaching experience a meaningful human exchange.
