Ricky has been teaching my daughter for last 5 years. My daughter is now 15 years old. She already played piano for a couple of years before Ricky started working with her and at that time was getting disinterested. We were looking for someone who would bring that interest and spark back into her playing piano. I was looking for a special teacher who can teach basics of improvisation and accompaniment to a young child. After talking with several potential teachers, we decided to work with Ricky.
Ricky has proven to be an amazing teacher for my daughter. He is patient, creative and able to adjust to the childâs needs. I was amazed when couple of months after my daughter started working with him; she was already improvising and playing really cool pieces of music. That kind of teaching has inspired my daughter to continue playing piano for the last 5 years. She has accompanied two of her friends singing at her school talent shows and graduation ceremony with encouragement and inspiration Ricky has provided her all along.
Ricky frequently encourages my daughter to pick her own songs she would like to work on. Ricky has a strong knowledge of music theory and has incorporated that in his lessons. I love that my daughter is learning music theory, improvisation, accompaniment and reading music all with the same teacher. It is not easy to find a teacher who is so creative to include all of these in his teaching method. I would highly recommend Ricky as a piano teacher for any age.

I continued my studies at Wheaton College, MA, and graduated with a B.A. in Music. Throughout college, I directed and conducted vocal and instrumental groups of various genres, and also began teaching.
Since graduating in 2008, I've taught hundreds of students voice, guitar, piano, music theory, and audio engineering.
During the day, I am a Network Engineer and enjoy playing ice hockey!

I first ask the student, as well as the parents, to agree on a set goal. Then, I develop a 'mini-curriculum' tailored to the student's strengths and weaknesses. I structure each lesson the same way
My student's would say that my lessons are motivational and packed with energy. I always follow up with parents to discuss progress, and the student's mandatory log book helps to keep everyone informed of what is expected each week.

I provide only equipment that I will personally use for the lesson (books, audio, and instrument). I do not provide instruments, electronic equipment (i.e. amps, cords, keyboards, speakers, computer, etc), books, or sheet music. I expect my students to have or purchase all the materials they will need.

After I have graduated from RIT, I have earned three years of professional experience at two federal agencies. At one of these federal agencies, I have participated in ASL courses by one-on-one signing words and sentences to tutees and by having these tutees copy these words and sentences in ASL.

I graduated with a degree from UCLA with high honors (Dean's Honors List, Magna Cum Laude) in Integrative Biology & Physiology. I also took many classes at UCLA in education, linguistics, history, and English. I had a cumulative GPA of 3.838 with 265.5 completed units at graduation and was a 10-time Dean's Honors List Recipient. I also was a member of the UCLA Regents Scholar Society, the Alpha Lambda Delta/Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Societies, the Alpha Epsilon Delta Pre-Health Honor Society, and Christian Students at UCLA. I worked as a TA for several undergraduate classes at UCLA, including Education 92F and Life Sciences 2-3. I also have gone through rigorous UCLA and Stanford University graduate-level coursework in science, math, educational strategies, and curriculum & instruction.
I have scored at the 98th percentile on the SAT I/II tests and received the highest score of 5 on multiple AP exams (see below for more details) as a high school student, achieving the AP Scholar with Distinction award by the end of my junior year. One of the wisest teachers once said that poor grades, study habits, and test scores are not life-threatening, but they are college-, job- , career-, and quality-of-life threatening. The most competitive students take a pro-active approaching to academics and tutoring while the least competitive take a reactive approach. All you need to do is watching the documentary 'Two Million Minutes' by Bob Compton to realize why students in other countries such as India and China surpass American peers in almost every subject, especially language (writing, grammar, etc.), math, science, and engineering-related subjects. They attend extra classes and tutoring from 6-7 AM in the morning to almost midnight.
In today's fast-paced and competitive job market, there is simply too much to lose by not investing now in your child's or your education. If a student is struggling, it makes sense to get him/her the help needed so that the time spent in school is worthwhile. Great grades and test scores can open doors that may have been previously closed and are also significant factors when determining scholarships, so investing time and effort now can pay off substantially in the future. Finally, let's not forget the most important part in all of this: the student. The confidence, knowledge, and skills that a student gains through effective tutoring can last a lifetime.
Please do not hesitate to get in touch. Every day spent waiting is another class or lecture's worth of material that you might potentially fall behind or another low quiz/test/exam score that will only make it harder to recover from. I have had too many students who could have received the grade(s) they wanted had they contacted me from the beginning.

In addition to her official position as UUG Youth Director, Kate was instrumental behind the scenes with the adult programming and community building, contributing to the steering committee with valuable ideas, input, and efforts to promote us in the social media, bringing in important speakers and contacts, and always lending a tried and true hand. She single-handedly planned and presented a very much appreciated service in January 2016 entitled: "An Active Peace for 2016: Profile of James Twyman, Peace Troubadour (and other peacemakers)," including a well-received lecture, music, readings, and audience participation. She was a stalwart support and cheerleader for our group and she left a large gap in our community. But we take heart in what she embedded in our group -- a standard of excellence for our children's edification and enjoyment that we will try to replicate in the future. She trained an up-and-coming youth leader, an adolescent who blossomed under Kate’s tutelage. Kate brought into our fellowship a wonderful energy, love, creativity, connectivity, artfulness, and magic which should enrich the environment of any employer lucky enough to enlist her aid and services. She was entrusted with our children’s welfare, with access to buildings and equipment, and was the most reliable and delightful person imaginable. She worked sometimes under very uncertain conditions when we did not know who the participants would be and under frequently and unexpectedly changing conditions, and she was always an excellent problem solver and adapted to the prevalent situation with grace and joy.
