I started taking weekly electric guitar lessons with Mr. Soukis at his Times Square studio, after watching many videos of him rockin' the blues at various venues in New York City. He is one of those rare teachers who is not only knowledgeable, but also able to share the knowledge with his students in a comfortable and relaxing manner. I have always been afraid of the guitar but the man has cured my guitar phobia. He has made learning the guitar approachable and fun!!

Spiros is great! I've been taking bass lessons from him for a couple of years now and thanks to him, I can actually play now! He's a good teacher, teaching both elements of theory and also how to get the "feel" of music, and he's also fun to be around. I can say that without his lessons and the music he's sent me, I would not be nearly as good as I am today, nor as motivated to learn more.

I wasn't Tom's student per se but he and I went over lots of material for our various cover bands and he's a very thorough, patient teacher, very adamant about getting parts exactly right but willing to listen to occasional disagreements. highly recommended!

my experience

Tom really knows his way around a bass. Each time I go for a lesson, i leave happy about the things we've accomplished in the lesson. Anything that i would like to learn Tom makes it possible for me to do so. I started getting lessons in order to not slow down on my playing. With my schedule constantly changing Tom has been very nice at accommodating when possible.

About Amy
I have been a voice, acting, and teacher of creative arts for over 25 years. My background includes ten years of classical training with Maestro Julio Berrocal, as well as vocal training through the Feldekrais approach with Marcy Lindhiemer. In acting I have studied with renowned Stanislavsky scholar Sonia Moore and Master acting teacher of the Strasberg Method, Marcia Haufrecht. I received a B.A. For comparative literature and creative writing at the State University of New York at Purchase and I am currently studying for a masters in social work at Walden University.
I believe, within all of us, Is the ability to express something distinctive and original. I work to help the student discover their individual and unique voice, weather it be through singing, acting or writing. I share with my students tools to gain the ability and con
fidence to achieve their goals. I empathize deeply with the challenges students may face when pursuing a life in the creative and performing arts, having worked professionally in those arena's for most of my adult life. I believe, it is the teachers job to respect each students individual process of learning.
My students have gone on to become recording artists, Broadway performers, movie actors, blues and cabaret artists and published writers.

*** Lesson Details ***
Voice
I am an empathetic teacher, sensitive to the students individual process of learning. My singing lessons usually start with breathing and relaxation exercises. Vocal exercise come next, then when the student is fully warmed up, we will begin to work on songs. It is important that the student be part of the process of picking material since the more they personally respond to the material the more apt they are to be engaged in their lessons and the more quickly they will learn. After three to six months they will understand the fundamentals of breathing and relaxation and its importance to proper vocal training. They will have begun the process of extending their range and will understand the principles of performance in song.
Acting
As an acting teacher and coach, I tailor my classes to the needs of each student. I utilize improvisatory and sensory techniques to help unleash spontaneity. I also encourage the students to use their personal experiences as a way to access a full range of emotions. I enjoy working with the student on script analysis, so as to discover the underlying motivations of the character the student is working on.
Creative and Lyric Writing
I use prompts as a way to get the student writing. Often, I will ask the student to write for stretches of time without editing themselves. It is important to unleash imagination before beginning the process of editing. Many times it is the unexpected that is the must compelling.

*** Studio Equipment ***
home- 10 minutes away from Manhattan with piano, seating for parents
-practice studio seating for parents

*** Travel Equipment ***
I provide a piano, cd/mp3 player and an large library of songbooks to work from. The student should bring sheet music of songs they want to work on and a recording device.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in teaching how to sing rock, pop, musical theater, jazz, and blues without hurting the voice as well as method acting instruction.

Hi!

I am a certified ESL teacher and academic tutor. I have experience teaching all levels of English, including English for the workplace. I have taught ESL speaking and writing classes at St. John's University; Teachers College, Columbia University; the New Americans Welcome Center; as well as through numerous private organizations. I also tutor students who need help with English/Social Studies/Literature classes, AP English classes, the REGENTS and the SAT.

I hold a BA in Media Studies and an MA in Middle-Eastern Studies. Therefore, if you need any help writing papers in the arts/humanities/history, I would be happy to help out. Prior to working as an ESL teacher, I worked in publishing as a literary assistant/ online editor and had great success editing manuscripts, papers, and even blogs.

As far as teaching is concerned, I
genuinely enjoy helping others and try to make my classes/ sessions as communicative and engaging as possible. Tutoring is a refreshing experience for me since I learn something new from my students each and every day.

Learning is just a matter of perspective; finding new ways to look at and explore the world around you. I look forward to meeting you and exploring together!

Abby is a great teacher. I was lucky to find her on this website. She genuinely cares about her students and wants them to improve their language skills. She is very friendly and easy to work with. She let you choose a topic or suggests a topic that you might like it. We have been focusing on my speaking and writing skills. I have made a big progress in just over a year. Abby is a really attentive teacher, she has been a big help to English. Besides the weekly lessons, we also worked on some articles for my blog and for my portfolio site. She was really involved and she had a lot of original and creative ideas. Working with her is a surprisingly efficient experience for me. Thanks to her, my English knowledge got better earlier than I expected. In addition, she is a really
caring person, and she always has new ideas about how to improve. She also pays attention for her students personal interests and prepares individual materials for each lesson.

Languages have always fascinated me. Traveling a lot as a child, I studied French, German, and then Twi when I had a semester studying dance & music in Ghana. The other two constants have been piano and dance. Classical Spanish music is what originally hooked me on the piano and later the world of flamenco ensnared me. For 18 years, I produced the internationally touring Dance on Camera Festival, the oldest dance film festival in the world produced by the Film Society of Lincoln Center. As a writer, I have been published in over 15 publications, now writing for two on-line magazines. As a dancer/choreographer, I just participated in Soaking WET 2017 and my installation BELL 8 was just at Waterfront Museum in Red Hook, Brooklyn and will be at the Lilac on Pier 25 July-August, 2017.
