My name is Sophie, I am a native French speaker from Belgium and have over fifteen years of teaching experience. After being a middle school language teacher for years I realized that my passion was for tutoring adults and teenagers one on one or in small groups. I love to build on whatever foundations (if any) my students already have and my approach is fun and interactive, the goal being to communicate as much as possible. I like to think that I make my students confortable enough to actually speak French when in real life situations. That is done by using a lot of open-ended activities such as dialogues, improvisations, Flashcards, games etc.

About Sophie

Hi, my name is Sophie and I am originally from Belgium. French is my native language and I have over ten years of teaching experience! I obtained my bachelor degree in education in 2004 and taught languages in a middle school until 2010-from which I got tenure. I then moved to San Diego with my h

Ms. Qi is a very accessible and diligent teacher. My son can be difficult, but she found ways to quickly connect with him and get him to open up. She accommodated his need for assistance with his regular work, but encouraged us to "start again" with Chinese which is probably a good idea. Very much appreciate her experience and enthusiasm.

Loudel is a natural teacher. She not only teaches in a way that is easy to understand and build on, but gives much needed insight into the historical aspect of how Tagalog has evolved in your first lesson. Her knowledge of how you can connect the grammatical rules of English and Spanish are also beneficial in helping make connections. In order to get the most from your lessons, immerse yourself in the resources she sends you ahead of your lesson. More importantly, relax and enjoy your session! You have chosen an excellent instructor.

Absolutely wonderful teacher. Great lessons, professional handouts. I couldn’t have asked for a better Tagalog teacher.

Spanish is all about practice, practice, practice. But before you can practice, clear comprehension of the material is imperative. We will work together to make sure the student grasps the material and feels confident speaking and writing Spanish.

Andrea works at the Writing Center at Grace Church School, a leading independent high school in lower Manhattan. I've taught there for the last couple years and make a point to send my students to the Writing Center (and her specifically, whenever possible) if they are struggling with any areas of their writing.

I've observed her in the Writing Center on a number of occasions, and she always does a great job navigating the difficult balance between helping students directly, and creating a path for them to work through questions on their own. She is direct, but supportive. She also is very perceptive of students' anxiety levels - many are kids who tend to stress about college and grades often - and how to change her tone, or comment with a personal anecdote, when what the student needs most is a moment to laugh or calm down.

Andrea's best skill in my opinion is teaching her tutees to adjust their priorities based on a deadline. She consults students whose papers are due in a couple of hours, and others who have a whole week left, and without being preachy gets across realistic expectations of what can be done within the timeframe.

Andrea connected with my daughter right away, encouraging her to push her writing in more creative directions. Andrea brought her bright personality to each lesson, making the writing process fun for my daughter. Together, they worked on her college admissions essay and a few English class assignments. Andrea helped my daughter overcome her writer's block and anxiety about writing to craft more personal, thoughtful essays. We are very pleased with the results!
Josh
My daughter had a great experience with Andrea as a writing tutor. Andrea helped her with her college admissions essay and she is attending Vassar in the fall - very pleased. Andrea is very patient, punctual, and has helped Claire gain confidence in her writing.

"Most highly recommended! I found Wolfgang to be an excellent German instructor for me. As a mature (50+) professional I was looking for a native German with perfect mastery of English and impeccable teaching credentials. Wolfgang fit that description perfectly. He tailored the lessons to my needs and made them fun. Along with the excellent language lessons, I really enjoyed his stories about life in Germany, and especially his hometown of Berlin. Thanks to Wolfgang I am much farther along my journey of learning to speak German."

Kerstin always made an special effort to provide teaching material that was not only age appropriate and appropriate for their level of proficiency, but was also tailored to their particular interests. Her teaching style is methodical, while also casual and interactive, and thus well suited to provide a positive learning experience, particularly for children and adolescents.
