About Wolfgang
I spent two decades of my professional life teaching English in Germany, authoring and co-authoring textbooks for the English classroom.
During my stay in the US, I had the opportunity to develop curricula for teaching German in public schools as well as private schools and wrote articles in the field of German literature. Undoubtedly, my academic background (MA in German and English and a Ph.D. in the field of education) helps me to provide solid work for my students.

What is my approach? First of all, I listen carefully, very carefully. I believe it is important for an excellent job to know precisely what my client wants to accomplish. Understanding this is the prerequisite to give good advice, guidance and then, of course, a plan, a kind of strategy to follow in order to reach these goals.

There is no dogma; there is only one
main criterion: success.

Most highly recommended! I found Wolfgang to be an excellent German instructor for me. As a mature (50+) professional I was looking for a native German with perfect mastery of English and impeccable teaching credentials. Wolfgang fit that description perfectly. He tailored the lessons to my needs and made them fun. Along with the excellent language lessons, I really enjoyed his stories about life in Germany, and especially his hometown of Berlin. Thanks to Wolfgang I am much farther along my journey of learning to speak German.

About Jackie
Hi! My name is Jackie, and I have 15+ years of experience in teaching, tutoring, and training. Currently, I am enjoying managing two small businesses while teaching students part time.

All of my students, meaning a perfect 100%, have improved their grades by at least one letter grade, if not more, and passed every one of their tests and exams. I help ALL my clients reach their goals!

A couple years ago, I returned to San Diego after living in Peru for several years where I taught English as a second language. My students ranged from adult business people and academicians to primary and secondary school students. I really needed to utilize different teaching methods depending on each student’s needs. Some students wanted more business-related conversation, so I had to be able to teach business principles in marketing, communication,
logistics, interviewing, and so much more. Critical thinking was an area that I pushed my business students to improve. Other students needed to work on the basics of grammar, reading, and writing, and we had a lot of fun in class, whether going through the interactive lesson or improvising by playing fun games to emphasize thinking on their feet in another language.

The feedback I often received from my Peruvian students, as well as my students in Mexico and the U.S., was that I made learning an enjoyable experience—they wanted to work harder to advance quickly in their classes. All of my students agree that I have a lot of patience and turn even the most challenging lessons into ones of positivity and encouragement. I provide critical feedback in the most constructive of ways that help the students reach conclusions on their own. I enjoy being there to support and guide their experience!

Before I left for Peru, I worked at St Vincent de Paul Village (part of Father Joe's Villages) in downtown San Diego. There I focused on Health Education. I built the Villages' first Health Education department and helped start its innovative Health & Wellness program. As part of these two programs, I taught homeless and low-income adults with and without learning disabilities, as well as children from preschoolers to high school students. Teaching such a wide variety of students how to improve their health while living in sometimes precarious situations without much income or stability pushed me to think creatively and come up with memorable ways to engage the students and help them apply what they had learned in their daily routine.

In high school, I took all AP and college prep classes. I went to a liberal arts college in Virginia where I focused on social studies and biology. I spent a few years training business people in Microsoft Office, Photoshop, InDesign, as well as presentation techniques. In grad school, I specialized in applied anthropology and public health. During that time, I tutored students in web design. In between, I've worked in Communications and Training in international health and development, so I have a lot of experience to bring to teaching.

Basically, I love teaching. I'm enthusiastic yet patient, and I absolutely adore helping kids and adults alike learn. It's such a sense of accomplishment when my students show off their terrific grades. I see the same look in my students’ eyes regardless of age—that pride that shines from within, that exuberant smile, like they can conquer anything. I want my students to keep that pride for a long, long time.

Right now, I'm writing two textbooks to be used in my Spanish classes. I've also written several academic articles published online. I love traveling, cats, and learning!

Peter is an excellent one-on-one teacher for Italian. Based on his background, I'm not surprised to find him very knowledgable about the language as it is currently spoken. In our sessions, he often explains the nuances of words and phrases based on usage, is careful to guide correct pronunciation and adds in multiple phrases of common speech. He has assembled a workbook that is well-organized and clear; we have progressed through it week by week and it has a nice feel of building a usable knowledge of key verbs, words and phrases. Peter is great at teaching and sharing what he knows, and on top of all of this he is flexible to the student's pace, needs and interests. We paused in our progress through the workbook to focus on specific topics like directions, clothing, colors, food, the urban setting, etc. Weekly he sends me sentences via a Google doc and I work and them and send my translations into Italian back--works great! I am excited to have Peter as my teacher and I think you will be, too. I plan on working with him through the course and beyond. Grazie mille, Peter!

About Clare
After two years working as a translator/interpreter for a local government office in Kochi, Japan, I moved back to the US last year. Since then, I have been a private teacher of Japanese for all ages, currently from age 7 to mid-40s. I love to be a witness when my students suddenly "get" something new we've been working on for a while. Japanese is a fascinating, beautiful, and complicated language, and it's exciting to be a partner in my students' achievements and success!

I am highly experienced in teaching middle school and high school age students--including my own kids, whom I homeschool. My first visit to Japan was a semester study abroad in my senior year of high school, so I can give ample advice to students who are preparing to go to Japan. Along with my on-the-ground experience living and working in Japan in a fast-paced and hig
h-stakes environment, I hold an M.A. in Japanese and N1 (highest level) certification on the Japanese Language Proficiency Test. Native Japanese speakers have complimented me on my native-like pronunciation and syntax.

Contact me any time for more information or to set up your first lessons!

Our son has always been interested in foreign languages. He began teaching him self Japanese in early 2014. He asked us to help him locate a tutor so he could accelerate his learning. We started working with Claire in late 2016 at the age of 14. It has worked out great! She is patient, professional and organized. She keeps us appraised of his progress. I was born in rural Oaxaca and lived there until I was 16 years old and decided to leave my hometown, the reason, because as a student I felt that I wasn't getting a good education back there, and I decided to find a better school with more resources and excellent teachers, I have been a pro-activist in education, ranging from middle school kids in Mexico and USA and adults also, mainly focus on cultural exchanges and health, I'm an MD, pursuing Pediatrics as a specialty.

With this portal, I'm looking for students that want to live Spanish, learn words and sentences and situations that you can apply your knowledge, for travelling, homework, or to impress your parents or friends. I don't like to have a teacher-student relationship, but instead a friendship, like those in Facebook, that's my ideology, teaching as a form of life and not as
a mandatory request.
