Taught American Sign Language (ASL) full-time and part-time (nights) for 39 years, just recently retired from full-time teaching. I have primarily used Signing Naturally (SN) workbooks, all levels. I have also used Learning American Sign Language (LASL).
Currently, I am teaching Deaf Culture as an online course at San Diego Mesa College.
I have been using ASL since I was 4 years old and I have attended California School for the Deaf, Berkeley (Fremont) and Riverside. I have received valuable experience from Deaf peers of Deaf parents, Deaf adults and Deaf leaders. In this sense, I am a native user of ASL and ASL Fingerspelled Signs.
Graduated from Gallaudet College (University) in Washington, D.C. with a B.S. in Business Administration. I received two Masters degrees from California State University, Northridge, one in Deaf Education and the other in Educational Administration. I received my Doctoral degree in Educational Leadership from University of Southern California ...

This was a first for us completing online cheer training to keep my daughter engaged throughout COVID lockdown. Cheryl was kind and supportive of my daughter as she tried new cheers and movements.
Her daughter was also a great co-teacher!
Looking forward to week 2.

Cheryl was great!! She was very knowledgeable and patient. My daughter was able to learn what we would consider a lot on the very first lesson. Despite the technical difficulties we were having with our personal equipment Cheryl was able to work through those issues with us and continue a lesson. She was friendly kind and reassuring to my daughter who doesn’t always have the most confidence in herself. She is helping her learn something that she really wants to do And helping her with her self-confidence as well! Couldn’t ask for anything more! Thank you so much take lessons and Cheryl

I was so nervous waiting to get my evaluation, but Cheryl put me at ease. She was so helpful and I am truly grateful. Thank you so much Cheryl.

Welcome! My name is Sheilah and I am excited to sign with you! In my classes, you will be exposed to Deaf culture and, of course, American Sign Language! I am proud to say that I grew up in the Deaf community and worked as an interpreter for many years; I now just focus on teaching ASL. In my classes, you can expect to be engaged with one another and encouraged. You're learning a new language that belongs to an incredible community! That is something to be incredibly proud of! Plus, I've heard sign language comes in pretty "handy".

"I have known Kat for a number of years in both a personal and professional level . Throughout all of my interactions with Kat she has shown herself to be persistent, optimistic and able to handle and multiple task within a wide range of subject areas . One of the greatest personal attributes she holds is empathy. And, this character trait is a benefit to those whom choose to retain her services as an instructor; for, any noteable teaching style must incorporate an ability to be flexible in methodology based on students' academic needs. Kat has gone above and beyond those criteria. I highly recommend her."

How to Teach Deaf Children to Read

Hearing Loss According to the CDC, at least one in 1,000 babies are born with a hearing loss. Historically, a hearing loss could go overlooked in a baby for months and even years, but fortunately, at present approximately 98% of infants are screened for a hearing loss. Identifying a hearing loss in infants is critical, because the first three years of life are crucial for speech and language development and it’s important for all children to have linguistic input from birth. What's the Difference Between ASL & BSL?
