If you are looking for a relaxed, fun and natural way of learning American Sign Language (ASL) let's try some lessons together. I teach in an interactive and empowering way where discovering the beauty of this visual language and the valuable culture cherished by Deaf and Hearing Americans is part of every lesson. I am a college professor, state certified educator, and an Interpreter. I love working with students and sharing what I know. It is such a joy watching students understanding and skills grow. I am thrilled and honored to be part of continuing the use of ASL and appreciation of Deaf Culture. I cater lessons to match your learning style and communication needs. Your classes will also have music, role-play, games and story telling. I introduce every new lesson with grammar concepts, vocabulary, and interactive practice. Then you will be able to use a DVD and workbook to rehearse and study on your own. You are always encouraged to ask questions and enjoy every step of your learning. When we meet again we will review what you have learned and continue to build your dynamic, practical, and exciting new language skills. I have taught ASL and Deaf Culture to many different students and groups: K-12 students, families with special needs children, college students, interpreting students, professionals, families with Deaf children, adults, home schoolers, choirs, and dance troops. I am a certified Interpreter with the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf and have been a professional interpreter since 1991. I am a certified teacher and hold an MS in education, a BA in Communications Human Relations/Interpreting. I have been teaching since 1991 as well.

My classes work best when students are willing to be interactive and immersed in Deaf situations, learn to turn voices off over time, and role play as needed to become stronger signers. Our goal is to bring you to a conversational level and to help you build your understanding of grammar, expressive and receptive skills, and situational vocabulary. Depending on your level and needs, I will be providing supplemental materials, videos, written materials, and other creative tools to deepen your language understanding. Most importantly, I build long-lasting relationships with my students, meeting on a regular basis, covering all aspects of skill-building, test prep, and organization. BACKGROUND •I worked in 3+ school districts and assisted students with special needs. •I have helped children as young as 3 years old and older than 50+ find their passion for American Sign Language. •CSUN Bachelor’s degree in Deaf Studies. •U of A Master’s Degree-Deaf/Hard of Hearing Teacher Preparation Program and Accelerated Master’s Program. •Passed the ASLPI (American Sign Language Proficiency Exam) through Gallaudet University. •Was a teacher of the deaf and an *itinerant teacher for the entire school district. *Itinerant teachers (also called "visiting" or "peripatetic" teachers) are traveling schoolteachers. They are sometimes specialized to work in their trade or field of special education as well as providing individual tutoring. The additional ($24) program I use to teach lessons has been approved and endorsed by Gallaudet University and has met the standards for the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL). It has also been accepted as an appropriate curriculum by TEKS or the Texas Essential Knowledge standards for Texas High school students. If you would like to take the course information to your school to see if it is accepted for credits whether that be for high school or college, please let me know. (The addition of this program is not required, but it does support retention for serious students.) To get the most out of our lessons, I recommend 10-15 lessons to start with as this ensures you have time to learn and grow as a student, as language learning happens over time. My priority is to help you succeed. I also realize that everyone learns differently. This is why all of my tutoring/teaching/mentoring is 100% individualized. I plan according to your goals, your learning style, and your challenges. My students get results because their learning is tailored to their individual needs. TUTORING OPTIONS: Private Lessons: From beginner to advanced, lessons are tailored to your level and needs, with use of videos, materials, and other tools as needed for success. Homework Assistance: Taking an ASL class and feeling lost? Let me help! We’ll work with your class lessons and makes them understandable! Group Classes: Want to work with your friends on learning? now you can! (Use the ASK A QUESTION button to set up group rates.) Family Classes: Deaf family member and need support? I am here to help facilitate communication! Baby Sign Language Classes: Advocates report that taking baby sign language classes enables children to communicate effectively before speech evolves and improves language acquisition and parent-child bonding. Baby sign language is NOT American Sign Language with all its syntax and structure, but uses signs from ASL in a way baby can comprehend and utilize them. Other reasons to take ASL classes include: Continued Education, valuable curriculum for homeschooled students, provides work or business language support (valuable for medical personnel, audiologists, behavior clinic specialists, etc.) For students age 8 and under, I recommend 15- to 30-minute sessions. Please contact me for that special pricing. (Use the ASK A QUESTION button) TEACHING PHILOSOPHY: Total immersion gives the language learner the best chance at acquiring a new language. Just as moving to another country can strengthen language, in American Sign Language it is important to get involved in the community, watch videos, movies, read books, and use the voice-off method that has been known to support student growth. In each lesson, I strive to include Deaf experience situations and opportunities to immerse the student even further. These methods have been tried and true for decades, and as you become more comfortable over time, they will feel like second nature and provide you with results.

Do you want to learn how to communicate with the Deaf? Are you intrigued by the use of sign language? Come learn with me. I am Deaf and I use American Sign Language. My brother is also Deaf, so we grew up using ASL together and at school. I have been teaching online for the past 5 years, and I love teaching others how to improve their communication skills in ASL. Sign language is one of the most expressive languages, have you seen an interpreter recently on the new? Have you noticed how fast they move their fingers, and make a variety of facial expressions. I can help you, no matter what level of ASL you know, I want to help you make progress and become fluent. I have a toddler and he is learning ASL, if he can, you can! See you in the classroom!

I have over two decades of experience teaching signing at all levels. I have been very successful in teaching students to learn and acquire good expressive and receptive sign skills. I am very passionate about the success of my students. I use strategies that make learning signing fun and very interesting. I keep my students very involved and engaged in my lessons. New sign vocabulary and sign structures I teach are immediately modeled and put into practice, which enhances students' retention. I pace my lessons to ensure the learning styles of the students are very well accommodated. I use approaches that foster deeper level of thinking and understanding of the use of signing in various contexts. I treat all my students with due regard, acceptance, and caring support. Their success in acquiring good sign language skills is very important to me. I provide one-on-one support to achieve that goal when required.

I’m happy to help you learn ASL at whatever level you are at, from the basics to a deeper dive into Deaf culture and how we sign and everything in between. Whatever your needs are and whatever you would like to learn. Your ability to sign skillfully will help you to gain the respect and appreciation from the Deaf community. So please let’s get to work and expand your signing skills to provide more effective access compared to write notes or using your phone which can get annoying right? It’s much better if I help you learn to sign ASL. My background includes a BA degree in Liberal Studies, I have had experience teaching ever since I was young instructing a class. And more recently I have been teaching another ASL class. If you prefer 1-on-1 tutoring I’m happy to provide that for you. I will tailor our lessons to match what you need and how you learn. I will share various resources that will address your needs and listen to your preferences. I don’t want to overwhelm you with a list of rules and requirements instead we will take steps together. Thank you I look forward to meeting you all.
