WORKSHOP FOR LEARNING TO SING
COMPETENCY: A SOLID FOUNDATION IN THE BASICS OF SINGING
OBJECTIVE: Students will learn Basic Components of Singing and demonstrate via public (by choice) performance; at the end of course.
Pitch

Pitch
The use of pitch in language to distinguish words. All languages use intonation to express emphasis, contrast, emotion, or other such nuances.
Pitch refers to the notes and sounds that we hear when someone sings, and it determines if the song is going to sound great or not. The singer will have to hit various pitches in a song with a relative amount of accuracy in order to be in tune with the overall music accompaniment and harmonies.
RHYTHM
Every song has a certain beat, and it is essential that we keep to the basic rhythm of the song, or else we might find that we are constantly trying to catch up with the lyrics or always lagging behind. Rhythm also determines the groove of the song, and this is what gets us on our feet and dancing when we listen to upbeat or fast tempo songs.
A great sense of rhythm begins with learning to recognize various beat duration, to vocalize notes with different beats, as well as to be able to keep to the basic tempo of a song.
BREATH CONTROL
Breathing is an essential component of singing, and is what most singing instructors would introduce to students during their first lesson for singing. It is also what most people would want to learn about and also ask questions about.
Breathing is a natural process, and it is not difficult to achieve better breath control for singing. A great breath foundation is needed for singing!
VOICE
To produce great sounds when singing it is essential to adopt beneficial singing habits in order to produce sounds that are more relaxed and healthy.
DICTION
Learning how to produce sound with our voice is not enough. We still need to shape our voice, and form words in a language that our audience will understand.
This is why diction is also one of the vital basics of singing, because it determines whether our audience understands what we are singing, and whether we are able to connect with them through our song. Diction is also a key factor towards hitting the correct pitches, especially for the high notes, and this will be explained in detail.

COURSE OUTLINE:
Lesson 1 PITCH
How to avoid the most common singing mistakes that prevent singers from producing a clean and professional vocal tone.
Objective: Students will learn warm up exercises that strengthen vocal cords and loosen the muscles needed to produce a professional sound./ the importance of singing ‘scales’ to achieve this objective.
Lesson 2 RHYTHM
Rhythms often used in various standard songs.
Objective: Students will listen and learn to identify rhythms used in songs. CD player provided.
Students will learn to tap out the various types of rhythm.
Students will sing a favorite song; using rhythms learned in class.
Lesson 3 BREATH
For the purpose of voice projection, students will learn to breath more from the diaphragm, the muscles beneath the ribcage, as well as the abdominal muscles.
Objective: Students will learn vital techniques to create a connected voice blending head, chest and diaphragm.
Lesson 5 DICTION
How to use the emotions, enunciation and clarity.
Objective: Students will learn to sing a favorite song with focus on elements of singing.
Lesson 6 Review of previous 5 lessons.
Lesson 7 Group/Individual Performances
Objective: Students will show confidence in employing elements from training.
Lessons 8/9/10 Rehearsal for recital TBA

Laura is a wonderful voice instructor! You can tell that she is very knowledgeable about music and voice overall. She makes my lessons very fun, but also informative at the same time. They are not just technical lessons about how to sing. Laura incorporates different teaching styles to accommodate her students' way of learning, and also works with you on the style of music you prefer. The only thing I hope for more of out of my lessons is to have more time singing, but I am a beginner and Laura makes sure you strengthen your foundations first in order to support your voice!

I - Silent Foundation

The silent foundation refers to the condition of your instrument as it is silent. If we are looking at the body as an instrument that sings, we first have to make sure that our instrument is in good condition. How healthy is your instrument? Is it well rested, well hydrated and loose? Or is it tired, dehydrated and tense? As you could guess, the condition of your instrument will have a significant impact on the quality of the sounds you make. So the first thing to be addressed is how your instrument is before it starts making sound.

II - Conditioning of Singing Behaviors

This is when we get busy. Once we have a well rested, healthy, hydrated and relaxed instrument we can start working it out. The goal is to condition our singing behaviors to be reflexive, reliable and strong. The way to do this is through a series of vocal exercises that will condition your voice to respond to the desires of your heart. Whatever it is that you want to express will be possible once your instrument is conditioned to the point where there is no gap between what you want to express and your ability to do so. Learning to sing is all about learning how to express yourself without barriers. You should be able to develop enough range, power, control and skill so that you can express your heart without feeling like you'™re incapable of achieving what you pursue. To achieve these abilities training is often necessary.

Hello! After earning my Bachelor of Music degree in Classical Voice from Hunter College in 2011, I have been working successfully as a singer, voice coach, and academic tutor. As a singer, over the past 8 years I have performed at professional theaters across the country, including Off-Broadway and at the world-renown Carnegie Hall. We practiced the new cadence for example of the deceptive cadence, the plagal cadence, and the phrygian. we learnt the basic root progression. a standard method of connecting triads with roots a fifth apart is to hold the common tone in the same voice and move all the other parts to the closest possible chord number. We learn about mediant triads s well.some ways using cadence that I can expand my harmonization practice is in general, when tempted to part write or analyze a chord in common-practice music as iii (in major), give the context further thought. i imagine with this knowledge it ill help me to compose a better harmonize song.
We practice together the scale degrees that are designated by Arabic numerals (1, 2, 3...), chor ds are similarly designated by Roman numerals (I, II, III). For example, in the key of C major the notes are C,D,E,F,G,A,B and we have designated them as 1,2,3,4,5,6,7. However, when we consider the triad chords in the key of C we have Cmaj, Dm, Em, Fmaj, Gmaj, Am, Bdim. These are designated I,II,III,IV,V,VI,VII. When speaking about these chords, for instance in the key of C major, we would call Gmaj the five chord, Dm the two chord,

The easiest way to find an interval's name is to first, count all the pitch names present, including the notes themselves (ignore sharps and flats at this point). Then, find out (had it been missing a flat or sharp) what type of interval it would be, depending on whether it is perfect (a 1,4,5,8) or major (2,6,7). If there are no sharps or flats, you are done. If there are, figure out if the flat or sharp decreases or increases the distance between the two pitches. If it increases the distance, the interval is augmented. If it decreases the distance, and the interval would otherwise be perfect, it is diminished. If it decreases the distance and the interval would otherwise be major, it is min that is what I learnt

Mariana was great! Very professional and able to explain the techniques in a very clear way. When I began, I was very nervous and self-conscious. She was patient and kind and never made me feel embarrassed!

She really knows her stuff and technique. I'd been to a few voice teachers before and they were great singers, but they didn't seem to have to really KNOW the techniques behind singing. Mariana clearly is a wonderful singer and has great training in what she does.

In a one hour lesson, we will spend twenty five minutes on vocal exercises designed to teach support and placement. Having performed leads on and Off Broadway, I know that without good technique you can't do eight shows a week, do back to back sets in a nightclub or cabaret or tour as a pop or rock singer. The second half of the lesson is spent on songs. As an acting as well as vocal coach, I focus on dramatics as well as musical interpretation. A singer must be connected to the words as well as the music. I hope to teach you to love singing as much as I do.

Mary Phillips is excellent! I highly recommend her. Her knowledge of technique and her ability to explain it's proper applications helped my daughter improve not only her vocal quality but her range. Mary also worked on building her self confidence and attitude. I've notice a significant improvement in her approach to auditions. She is less nervous and more confident in her skills. We had a hard time trying to find an instructor who values someone with a lower range. I wish we had found her earlier!

Eliza is a professional ballet dancer and teacher based in New York City.

She is a native of Massachusetts and studied at Walnut Hill School for the Arts, spending summers at Boston Ballet School, School of American Ballet, and Miami City Ballet School. She began her professional career after high school, accepting an apprenticeship at Charlotte Ballet, and then at Richmond Ballet. In Richmond, Eliza had the opportunity to choreograph, and was inspired to move to New York City to become a more versatile artist. et, dancing the Sugar Plum Fairy in Artisan Dance Company's The Nutcracker, performing in The Sleeping Beauty with American Ballet Theatre at the Metropolitan Opera House, and participating in Cherylyn Lavagnino Dance's residency at Kaatsbaan International Dance Center. In December 2016, Eliza performed as a demi-soloist in the premiere production of Brooklyn Ballet's The Brooklyn Nutcracker at Brooklyn Museum, and in January 2017 she was a featured dancer in Secondary Dominance, an original opera which premiered at HERE Arts Center as part of the 2017 Prototype Festival. Eliza also interned at ABT's Jacquelyn Kennedy Onassis School, and subsequently completed the ABT® National Training Curriculum in Levels Pre-Primary through Level 5.

Eliza is very grateful for the professional experiences she has had so far. As she continues to dance professionally and teach ballet to dancers of all ages and levels, she looks forward to expanding her horizons by pursuing many more versatile opportunities.

Not only is Eliza a certified teacher, but she is very insightful and genuinely cares about your goals. She has given great tips and suggestions to help me improve both in and out of her class.

Since I started taking lessons with her about 5 months ago, I've seen a lot of improvement. She makes sure that you work hard every single class and she doesn't let you get away with not doing your best. Also, she has been working with me on fixing the bad habits I never knew I had before she pointed them out. Moreover, she is very observant and tailors each class to work on the things she sees you struggling with, even if you don't realize it yourself that you are having trouble. Eliza has taught me so much and I'm sure that anyone would benefit from taking her class.

Elizabeth is a really committed teacher.She is very patient,knowledgeable and she cares about her students progress by correcting every mistake.The lessons with her are challenging and well organized and after every lesson you know that you worked hard. About Iman
Iman has been teaching dance (contemporary, jazz, modern, ballet) since 2009 and has acquired her certified personal trainer certification through the National Acadmey of Sports Medicine.

She graduated from Florida State University with a BFA in Dance and it is there where Iman discovered her love for fitness. Taking many courses in Pilates, crossing training with athletes, and being in Ballet class every day gave her a plethora of knowledge and insight. she is looking forward to helping you reach your goals whether it's in a dance class or perfecting your lunges!

Dancing professionally in NYC and abroad with a variety of artists and companies in addition to training clients with specific fitness needs has been a whirlwind experience. She most recently performed onboard the Norwegian Escape doing Broadway's "After Midnight".
Prior to this contract, Iman was performing in Third Rail Projects’ "The Grand Paradise, an immersive theater show."

About Eric
Eric is a working magician based in New York. He has worked at several magic shops, and performed for thousands of people from all walks of life. He spent the summer of 2015 teaching magic at French Woods festival for the Arts, and will be returning for the summer of 2016. Wow! Eric provided an incredible experience for my 13 year old daughter. Not only did he keep her interested and entertained the whole time with his in depth instruction, but he left her wanting more! We can't wait until our next session with him. 10/10 would recommend.

Eric knows everything about magic inside and out. He taught my kids to actually be entertaining and they came out of their shell and now they do magic everywhere we go. He really has a way with kids.

Last Summer, I worked alongside Eric at French Woods Festival, and not only did Eric make my time more fun, but I also learned new magic techniques that I had never seen before. As well as being an informative teacher, Eric really knew how to engage kids into what he was doing. One memorable experience I had was, when I hopped into a classroom to see what was going on, and one of Eric's students was giving a hilarious invisible deck routine about politics. Having been at French Woods for so long, I have seen many magic teachers come and go, and I can confidently say that Eric is one of the best teachers and performers I have ever seen.
