Carolyn has and is exactly what I was looking for in a voice coach. Like me, her interests in the performing arts are broad. I felt both excited and comfortable with her. She is professional and easy to talk to. I can sense strongly that Carolyn is full of love and compassion. I am so excited for the next lesson! Here's to the new horizon and everything in between! :) Thank you Carolyn for reassuring me that my decision to switch careers was a wise decision indeed. Dance forward.

My first lesson with Carolyn was very positive. She quickly assessed where I was and started from that point so we didn't waste time. She showed great passion for songwriting and a genuine interest in my development.

Miri taught K-pop choreography to my 9 yro son and I. She is the best! She worked with us on song selection, changed the choreo when needed so it wasn't too hard for beginners, and was so positive and patient that we felt totally comfortable dancing in front her on a Zoom call. She sent us videos to practice with between lessons and always came prepared with a plan. I cannot recommend Miri highly enough!

Our company Alignment Healthcare has been taking advantage of Take Lesson's dance classes for several months now, instructed virtually by Jordan Wentz. We have tried various types (burlesque, wedding dance, hip hop and more) and Jordan has done a terrific job with all of them! Our employees including myself have provided positive feedback all around and look forward to her lessons after the long work days, it has served as a perfect way to have active fun while learning new skills. Definitely recommend as the pace can be suitable and adjusted for different experience levels! We plan to continue with Jordan as our instructor with different courses each time.

I thoroughly enjoyed working with Jordan Wentz, not only did she help resurrect my acting dreams from the grave, but she as well, with the proper tools given, helped me get all that much closer to the stage, and for that I am forever thankful.

Private Tap Dance Teacher

I’m available to teach private lessons for teens and adults interested in learning tap for the first time, or who want to improve their skills. My strengths are patience, enthusiasm, and an unusual way of approaching dance. I’m not famous or particularly interested in becoming famous, so if that’s your goal, I’m not the right teacher for you. I strongly believe everyone can dance, and should. All bodies can learn to dance and enjoy themselves. Dance should be joyful, about self-expression, and a way of learning about your body and your spirit. Finally, I believe it’s never too late to start learning something new, and your bucket list should not wait until you retire.

About Kristen

I started dance later in life -- tap at 19 and ballet at 31 -- because I was so tall and awkward as a child. It never occurred to me that people my size could be dancers. I fell in love with dance as an escape from a stressful job teaching high school history. I saw such changes in myself the more

Kristen is a human that makes her students feel immediately at ease. She is kind, quirky, and hilarious, but more importantly, she is patient and meets students where they are to ultimately fulfill their potential and their goals. I first started taking tap classes from Kristen a few years ago as a nervous adult (25 yo) seeking a bare bones beginner tap class. Since then, having incorporated exercises, games, and routines to awesome music, I have come leaps and bounds, built up my courage and confidence, and am proud to officially feel part of the tap community. If you’re looking for an excellent teacher, regardless of experience level, look no further!
Katie O
I can not say enough positive things about Kristen and her teaching! She is one of the best teachers I have had. She understands that adults learn differently than kids. Kristen has a great way of giving feedback that inspires you to grow and learn. I especially enjoy the flexibility she demonstrates in her teaching style. If I am not getting something, the next week she has a different method to teach it and bingo, it has clicked.
Mona Jacobson
Kristen is an amazing teacher; she exudes a love for dance. Her teaching style is supportive and encouraging. Her feedback is provided in a gentle way. She is excellent at explaining all the steps in ballet and tap. I look forward to my lessons with her and have loved her teaching style so much during ballet that I am now taking tap lessons with her. I think Kristen is the perfect teacher for adults wanting to learn ballet and tap and I highly recommend taking lessons with her.

"Love taking tap with Kristen! What I love about her is that she meets you where you need to be met and change her approach to teaching a step or skill so that it makes sense to you. If you are an adult beginner, she makes everything really assessable- especially if you don’t have any dance experience. You might go into your first lesson or class nervous, but by the end you’ll have learned how to tap and feel at ease and excited for your next class! Her class is the highlight of my week!"

Private Tap Dance Lessons Near You

Fred Astaire. Ginger Rogers. Bill "Bojangles" Robinson. Eleanor Powell. The Rockettes. If you're not yet interested in learning how to tap dance, then all you need to do is watch a video of any one of these famous tap dancers. A few steps in and the dance form will have you immediately entranced!

While glitz, glamour, and the Broadway stage characterizes the sort of tap dance with which we're most familiar today, tap dancing has deep roots in anthropological history. Today's modern styles of tap dancing are actually a fusion of percussive rhythmic dancing that originated in a variety of ethnic cultures from all around the world. To name just a few, these include African tribal dancing, Irish jigs, English clog dancing, and Spanish flamenco dance.

Why Learn to Tap Dance?

...

Primarily, tap dance is an incredibly fun and joyful way to exercise and let off steam! When you know how to tap dance, you can forget about going for a five-mile run to get your cardio exercise in for the day because tap dancing also elevates your heart rate. So, you can exercise and express yourself at the same time!

Tap dancing requires a person to constantly shift their weight between feet and parts of the foot. As a result, it strengthens balance, which is incredibly healthy for the body's physiology. When you strengthen the muscle groups that are responsible for balance, you'll reduce back pain, improve posture, and you'll lower your chances of physical injury.

The Best Way to Learn Tap Dancing and What You'll Study in Lessons

It's easy to find plenty of free tap dance classes and tutorials online, but the best way to learn is with a private tap dance tutor. In private lessons, you'll receive personalized instruction, your teacher's undivided attention, and immediate feedback, benefits that simply aren't possible with online videos or in a larger class setting. You can focus on the aspects of tap dance that interest you most, while you improve the techniques that challenge you most.

Plus, no two private lessons are exactly alike. Your tap dance teacher will completely customize your lessons to meet your needs, taking into account your preferred learning styles and current skill level. For example, tap dance lessons for adults differ greatly in terms of teaching methods and course content from tap dance classes for kids. In private lessons, you'll stay motivated, interested, and energized, while you learn and dance at a pace that's comfortable for you.

Sample Curriculum for Beginner Tap Dancing

If you have little or no experience tap dancing, then beginner lessons are right for you! In these lessons, you'll be introduced to all the basics of tap dance. Your instructor will help you get comfortable in your shoes, shifting weight between your feet, and performing some basic steps. In beginner lessons, your teacher might cover the following topics:

  • Get acquainted with your tap shoes.
  • Learn to warm up and stretch out
  • Practice toe-tapping in rhythm
  • Learn the ball, heel and ball change
  • Practice a single buffalo

Sample Curriculum for Intermediate Tap Dancing

If you're already familiar with the basic tap dance steps and turns, then you'll be at home in intermediate lessons. Your teacher will first assess your skill level. You'll then begin learning more complex steps and challenging yourself to master increasingly difficult combinations. In intermediate classes, your teacher might choose to cover the following subjects:

  • Master putting rhythm into every movement
  • Improve fluidity of movement with strong ankles
  • Practice increasingly complex combinations
  • Feel the off-beat with a syncopated rhythm
  • Practice intermediate turns

Sample Curriculum for Advanced Tap Dancing

If you're a proficient tap dancer who would love to further your skill, improve your technique, and expand your ability to express yourself through dance, then advanced lessons are for you! You'll have the opportunity to work with a professional dancer to increase your strength, flexibility, and stamina. Topics covered in advanced lessons depend greatly on the individual student's interests, but your teacher might choose to cover the following:

  • Design your own choreography
  • Combine tap with other dance styles
  • Master advanced, highly challenging steps, combinations, and turns
  • Audition coaching
  • Performance preparation

How to Find a Tap Dance Teacher Near You
