WORKSHOP FOR LEARNING TO SING
COMPETENCY: A SOLID FOUNDATION IN THE BASICS OF SINGING
OBJECTIVE: Students will learn Basic Components of Singing and demonstrate via public (by choice) performance; at the end of course.
Pitch
Rhythm

Diction
Pitch
The use of pitch in language to distinguish words. All languages use intonation to express emphasis, contrast, emotion, or other such nuances.
Pitch refers to the notes and sounds that we hear when someone sings, and it determines if the song is going to sound great or not. The singer will have to hit various pitches in a song with a relative amount of accuracy in order to be in tune with the overall music accompaniment and harmonies.
RHYTHM
Every song has a certain beat, and it is essential that we keep to the basic rhythm of the song, or else we might find that we are constantly trying to catch up with the lyrics or always lagging behind. Rhythm also determines the groove of the song, and this is what gets us on our feet and dancing when we listen to upbeat or fast tempo songs.
A great sense of rhythm begins with learning to recognize various beat duration, to vocalize notes with different beats, as well as to be able to keep to the basic tempo of a song.
BREATH CONTROL
Breathing is an essential component of singing, and is what most singing instructors would introduce to students during their first lesson for singing. It is also what most people would want to learn about and also ask questions about.
Breathing is a natural process, and it is not difficult to achieve better breath control for singing. A great breath foundation is needed for singing!
VOICE
To produce great sounds when singing it is essential to adopt beneficial singing habits in order to produce sounds that are more relaxed and healthy.
DICTION
Learning how to produce sound with our voice is not enough. We still need to shape our voice, and form words in a language that our audience will understand.
This is why diction is also one of the vital basics of singing, because it determines whether our audience understands what we are singing, and whether we are able to connect with them through our song. Diction is also a key factor towards hitting the correct pitches, especially for the high notes, and this will be explained in detail.

COURSE OUTLINE:
Lesson 1 PITCH
How to avoid the most common singing mistakes that prevent singers from producing a clean and professional vocal tone.
Objective: Students will learn warm up exercises that strengthen vocal cords and loosen the muscles needed to produce a professional sound./ the importance of singing ‘scales’ to achieve this objective.
Lesson 2 RHYTHM
Rhythms often used in various standard songs.
Objective: Students will listen and learn to identify rhythms used in songs. CD player provided.
Students will learn to tap out the various types of rhythm.
Students will sing a favorite song; using rhythms learned in class.
Lesson 3 BREATH
For the purpose of voice projection, students will learn to breath more from the diaphragm, the muscles beneath the ribcage, as well as the abdominal muscles.
Objective: Students will learn vital techniques to create a connected voice blending head, chest and diaphragm.
Lesson 5 DICTION
How to use the emotions, enunciation and clarity.
Objective: Students will learn to sing a favorite song with focus on elements of singing.
Lesson 6 Review of previous 5 lessons.
Lesson 7 Group/Individual Performances
Objective: Students will show confidence in employing elements from training.

I have been singing since I was 3, anything and everything from Michael Jackson to Elvis Presley to Luciano Pavarotti. Originally from Colorado, I studied music/theatre, as well as vocal pedagogy at The University of Colorado at Boulder, where I graduated with highest honors. I made my Broadway debut in "The Phantom of the Opera" at age 24. I also performed in "Chess in concert" as a featured rock tenor soloist at the New Amsterdam Theatre on Broadway with Josh Groban. I have understudied and performed lead roles in the first AEA National Tour of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s "Whistle Down the Wind." Regionally, I have played many lead roles all over the United States in productions including "Les Miserables," "Miss Saigon," "The Wild Party," and "She Loves Me."

As an ASCAP recording artist, currently I am working in the studio with a full production team on my first pop/rock album. I also often sing on demos for producers and write songs for other artists in many different genres.

As a TV/Film actor, most recently I was on set with Marvel's TIARA 2 on Netflix. I have booked lead roles in 4 SAG-AFTRA short films, as well as the comedic lead in a SAG-AFTRA Web-series. I was called back for producers as a Series Regular for "The Knick," an episodic series produced and directed by Steven Soderbergh on Cinemax.

My audition prep will help you master your sides for any playing space; Broadway plays/musicals and especially on camera.

For Singing, as a vocal technician/trainer I am like going to the gym for your voice. My exercises are safe, simple, and most importantly, I teach you how to practice correctly.

For ACTing, we can explore both the foundation itself with monologues and scenes, as well as the tricks of the trade mastering the camera frame and how to create memorable auditions for TV/Film.

At the first lesson, I will ask you to tell me what songs you want to play and artists you want to play like and I will set the table for that by providing the chords you'll need, chord and scales and exercises to enable you to play them and guidelines and tricks on how to make it happen as quickly as possible. I know a wide variety of songs in all styles and styles, including current hit songs as well as pop, rock, blues, jazz, country songs. if you have a song or artist that I don't know already, I will learn it (often on the spot) and if not right then, at the next lesson. I have taught my students to play songs by artists as varied as Taylor Swift, U2, Jason Mraz, Adele, Eric Clapton, Django Reinhardt, Doc Watson. And that's just naming a few.

I always make it clear to my students at the first lesson: "There is no such thing as a stupid question". I want you to feel comfortable to stop me at any time to clarify what I am teaching you, ESPECIALLY if it is too difficult or vague. I pride myself on always being organized for your lesson and making sure that you grasp whatever it is I am teaching you. The goal is to get you to be able to play what you want as quickly as possible. This will take practice and dedication on your part, but I will do everything in my power to help you get there.

I never force anything on any of my students. but I feel it would be beneficial for you to learn to read music OR read tablature and chord diagrams. You tell me which one and we'll go in that direction. If you'd like to read music, then we can decide on a book for you. I have used Hal Leonard instructional books (with CD's! this way you can play with a backing track and get a sense of rhythm, which is very important), but I'm open to other method books you might have or like.

After 3 to 6 months, you will feel you are significantly more skilled on the guitar than you were before we started lessons. You will know more chords (and move from chord to chord), be able to do at least some basic fingerpicking and be able to read some music or tablature.

Hello! After earning my Bachelor of Music degree in Classical Voice from Hunter College in 2011, I have been working successfully as a singer, voice coach, and academic tutor. As a singer, over the past 8 years I have performed at professional theaters across the country, including Off-Broadway and at the world-renown Carnegie Hall. We practiced the new cadence for example of the deceptive cadence, the plagal cadence, and the phrygian. we learnt the basic root progression. a standard method of connecting triads with roots a fifth apart is to hold the common tone in the same voice and move all the other parts to the closest possible chord number. We learn about mediant triads s well.some ways using cadence that I can expand my harmonization practice is in general, when tempted to part write or analyze a chord in common-practice music as iii (in major), give the context further thought. i imagine with this knowledge it ill help me to compose a better harmonize song.
We practice together the scale degrees that are designated by Arabic numerals (1, 2, 3...), chor ds are similarly designated by Roman numerals (I, II, III). For example, in the key of C major the notes are C,D,E,F,G,A,B and we have designated them as 1,2,3,4,5,6,7. However, when we consider the triad chords in the key of C we have Cmaj, Dm, Em, Fmaj, Gmaj, Am, Bdim. These are designated I,II,III,IV,V,VI,VII. When speaking about these chords, for instance in the key of C major, we would call Gmaj the five chord, Dm the two chord,

The easiest way to find an interval's name is to first, count all the pitch names present, including the notes themselves (ignore sharps and flats at this point). Then, find out (had it been missing a flat or sharp) what type of interval it would be, depending on whether it is perfect (a 1,4,5,8) or major (2,6,7). If there are no sharps or flats, you are done. If there are, figure out if the flat or sharp decreases or increases the distance between the two pitches. If it increases the distance, the interval is augmented. If it decreases the distance, and the interval would otherwise be perfect, it is diminished. If it decreases the distance and the interval would otherwise be major, it is min that is what I learnt

Mariana was great! Very professional and able to explain the techniques in a very clear way. When I began, I was very nervous and self-conscious. She was patient and kind and never made me feel embarrassed!

She really knows her stuff and technique. I'd been to a few voice teachers before and they were great singers, but they didn't seem to have to really KNOW the techniques behind singing. Mariana clearly is a wonderful singer and has great training in what she does.

Alida is one of the best, most caring dance teachers I've ever had. Alida is a very good teacher. Never once did she come late. She has great manners and great teaching techniques. About Othell
Othell J. Miller is a passionate & innovative professional artist/educator dedicated to meeting humanity's need for enlightening, empowering, and entertaining art. He has been seriously engaged in the art and craft of acting since a teen. Subsequently, he pursued two theater related degrees, the most recent being a MFA in Acting from Rutgers, Mason Gross School of the Arts.

He has taught Acting & Public Speaking for the last eighteen years, both on a collegiate and secondary school level. Moreover, he's acted in or directed numerous high quality theater productions.

Mr. Miller's primary objective as an artist/educator is to foster in others both self-awareness and a greater understanding of the human condition. He believes meaningful, technically sound arts' instruction aids in self-reflection & offers profound revelations about
life.

He is most concerned with aiding orators and actors in delivering authenticity on stage or on screen. Therefore, his work pushes the orator or actor to develop a greater self awareness, a strong sense of truth, an ability to actively listen, and a bravery to connect with other actors and the circumstances of the script. Mr. Miller is also invested in the development and use of both precise diction and a natural, confident, and compelling voice.

Othell brings a mature artistry and a professional approach to his teaching style. He maintains high expectations for students and motivates them them to achieve their goals. Not only have I witnessed Othell's success in helping students to grow in theatre/acting, he inspires students' personal growth and confidence. As a director, his productions are thoughtful, relevant, and ambitious. I can only imagine how useful, effective, and enjoyable his one-on-one sessions would be!

Mr. Miller has a passion for acting and teaching and it is clear he loves doing both. He has been my acting instructor for 6 years and under his direction he has crafted my raw talent into a full fledged artistry. With him as my instructor he has helped me craft audition material that, after my execution, turned into an acceptance from two college level conservatories. I highly recommend Mr. Miller, his passion combined with his qualifiation will take your talent to the next level. You just have to want it!

Mr. Miller is an extraordinary teacher, mentor and communicator. His ability to engage, motivate and challenge young people is highly regarded. He encourages students to find their own voice through acting and public speaking. About Traci
Traci lives in New York City and currently dances with The Suzanne Farrell Ballet, New Chamber Ballet, and Cello Pointe. Recent projects have included guesting with Les Grands Ballet Canadiens; dancing Merce Cunningham's Inventions, Locale, and Fractions; and in Masks of a Woman by Kristin Draucker. She has performed classical and neoclassical ballets with Neglia Ballet in Buffalo, NY. Originally from Utah, Traci graduated from Brigham Young University with her BA in Dance and minor in Mathematics.

Traci teaches ballet and pointe at The School at Steps, and has guest taught around the United States in Utah, California, Nevada, New Jersey, and Montana.

Traci is a fantastic teacher because she is a fantastic dancer. She knows how to guide you whether you are overcoming an injury or trying to take your dancing to the next level. Traci takes ballet seriously but with lots of humor and grace!

I reached out to Traci to brush up on my ballet technique when I was preparing for an audition. She is a wonderful teacher! Her corrections are always specific and very helpful. Working with her has really boosted my technique and made me feel more confident walking into dance calls.

Traci is an eloquent and experienced teacher with a wide variety of ability levels. She is fair and balanced in the classroom and keeps the atmosphere fun while expecting the most of her students.

As a Director of a company and school, I have seen many guest teachers come and go - Traci is a phenomenal teacher.

My career as an actor, singer and director spans more than 20 years. At the young age of 14, as part of a production of Big River at the Orpheum Theatre in Memphis, I realized that theatre was the path for me. I later earned my B.A. in Theatre with a minor in vocal music from Lambuth University where I led casts in such shows as The Fantasticks, The Diviners, and Amadeus. I also discovered my knack and love for directing, taking on children's theatre and mounting a fantastic main stage production of Terra Nova.

 My path took me to Los Angeles, where I continued my acting career in theatre, film and TV. Some of my favorites include Freddie the American in Chess, The Fool in King Lear, Arturo Ui in Brecht's The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui, and Puck in A Midsummer Night's Dream performed both in L.A. and Frankfurt, Germany. As a director,
I successfully brought to life such wonderful scripts as A Piece of my Heart, In the Heart of America and the controversial Marat/Sade. 

Within a few months of arriving to New York, I was cast as the Emcee U/S in a national tour of the musical Cabaret. Soon after my return, I booked the two-person Off-Broadway hit comedy Channeling Kevin Spacey in which I played 15 different characters and ran for a solid two years!
