I have a Master’s in Opera Performance from the Boston and New England Conservatories as well as graduating from Vocal Performance programs at Boston University and Western Washington University. I have sung professionally with Boston Lyric Opera, Children’s Theater Companies, churches and synagogue and have toured on the east coast as well as Athens, Greece. Premiering new music is a specialty. I can help you prepare your pieces for auditions. My students have successful auditions for college opera and music theater programs, and as choir soloists.
Students gain a larger vocal range and an easy, natural way of singing whether it is in a rock band, choir or as a soloist. Together we find the joy of singing while building a solid technique.
I have worked with small children as a Musikgarten teacher and have toured artist residency
programs which introduce children to music and theater in schools. I was adjunct faculty at the College of St. Benedict/St. John’s University and local music studios as well as maintaining my private teaching practice.
*** Lesson Details *** I am persistent and positive! Working and performing with singers and master teachers has helped me to be a resourceful teacher who understands the process of becoming a singer. I believe that a sense of fun and play helps you to accomplish your goals quickly. For beginners you will learn how the voice works and how to care for and develop your instrument, I recommend adults take 45" - 1 hour lessons weekly for skill building. We will choose music that interests you and helps to build your voice starting with basics before moving to more complex and challenging music. Understanding music theory and sight-reading will help you get the most out of your singing. After 3 - 6 months you should have a good command of breathing and an understanding of how to sing with an expressive tone. For the advanced student, I can help you work on trouble spots and give you tools to help with the changes that voices naturally go through. I look forward to giving you my full focus and celebrating your growth and accomplishments!
*** Studio Equipment *** Condo w/ open area with piano. Visitor's parking lot w/ seating in studio for parents to listen. Parents with younger siblings can use play areas outside. Basic library of vocal music, giving the student a way to sample different kinds of songs before purchasing books or downloading songs on their own. Music stand, iPhone plug-in/Amp for accompaniments and examples you want me to hear.
*** Travel Equipment *** I provide a basic library of vocal music at my home studio and will bring targeted books with me. Students should print out their favorite popular songs from such services as Music Notes website. I expect my students to provide a keyboard, music stand and notebook as well as a low distraction environment.
*** Specialties *** As an opera and musical theater, Oratorio and church singer, I help singers of all levels improve within their genre from popular music to opera. A good singing technique will help performers in any style stay healthy and enjoy an expressive singing instrument.
My daughter has learned so much with Julia in the past few weeks. It's been a true pleasure to witness the progress. They have worked on sight reading, tone, physical posture, and many other aspects of singing and sound production. Julia is a very caring and supportive instructor. She is full of enthusiasm and humor, and this shows in her choice of singing materials. We look forward to having more lessons with her!

Kim jumped right in and learned everything she could about what I was working on so that she could help me perform at my very best. I can not say enough good things about all that she thought me. I recommend her to everyone I know. Her experience is second to none and her approach is genuine. Thank you for all the help Kim.
From the hit TV comedy Crazy Ex-Girlfriend to drama at The Tony Award winning Steppenwolf Theater, my 20 year acting career has taught me many lessons to share. As a working writer/director this has only grown.
I love teaching. There are few things as rewarding as being a part of a students development and their personal victories. Many of my students have achieved notable representation and consistently work. Other students are simply pursuing acting as a passion or a tool to gain confidence. Whether it's audition prep or personal development, if you bring the drive, I promise to get you to your goals ... oh, and we'll have a lot of fun on the way. After all, it's called a "play" for a reason.
I'm a professional singer/teacher residing in New York City with degrees from Indiana State University, and New York University with a specialization in Classical Art Song, Musical Theatre Repertoire, and Vocal Pedagogy.
Every lesson is about YOU. So each week we will take a look at your goals for the lesson, whether you are preparing for college auditions, school talents shows, a desire to work with music theory, or piano skills, this is your opportunity to explore. Everything is possible.
As a professional singer myself, I am constantly auditioning on broadway, off-broadway, and for smaller local and regional theater opportunities. I believe that as a teacher I have to continue to be in the field and learning as the industry continues to change. I have to be aware of the opportunities in this business. I have been hired by pr
ofessional opera and musical theatre companies, in additional to large choral works as a soloist, and have a private studio in Washington Heights.
Prior to NYC I taught middle school choir for 200+ students, of which I received teacher of the year in 2012. I also still hold a valid teaching license in the state of Indiana and currently applying toward my NYS teaching certification.
Within my voice studio I teach in person and online lessons. While online lessons can be beneficial for students wishing to study with me that are not in the immediate vicinity, I recommend in person lessons
I look forward to hearing your beautiful voice and helping you to embrace music!
Shelley is fantastic. She made me feel at ease right away, even though I have no prior singing experience and I was incredibly nervous. As early as my second lesson, I could already hear a difference in my voice when I listened back to the recording of our session! She really knows what she's doing and it shows. I highly recommend Shelley. In addition to being a great music teacher - which she is - she's also so pleasant to work with! She's fast to respond, very accommodating with her schedule, friendly and easygoing, and professional. I started out thinking I'd just take a few weeks' worth of lessons to get out of my comfort zone. Over a year later, I'm still here, and looking forward to every week.

Ms. Shelley is very dedicated to every one of her students. It is a pleasure working with her!
March 4, 2019
Shelley is by far the best voice teacher I have ever had. Within the short duration of time that I have worked with her, I have noticed that my voice has significantly changed (it feels and sounds better) after using her techniques. She knows what she’s talking about and offers substantial and specific criticism. She individualizes every student, in that she chooses repertoire that benefits a particular voice instead of assuming that every student has the same voice and strengths/weaknesses. This is a very important skill for a voice teacher to have. Shelley is also very good at time management within a lesson. Most importantly, she makes the experience fun! I would highly recommend Shelley to anyone who is looking for a voice teacher! Thank you Shelley!

"I hired Traci as my personal Ballet instructor and she absolutely exceeded my expectations. Traci was clear and concise with her directions for each combi
nation, she answered my questions graciously and really focused in on proper alignment and technique. She made me feel comfortable and gave me some awesome advice along with challenging combinations for my level. Traci's positive vibe in class and wise choice of music made for an exquisite class. I highly recommend Traci as a Ballet teacher and I cannot wait to take from her again!"
"Lindsay put together mommy and me ballet lessons for my 2 year old and I. We looked forward to our lessons and she kept my daughter engaged and having fun
the entire time. Over the course of a year, not only did we have a lot of fun doing ballet together, she actually learned a few basic steps and is comfortable with the rhythm of warming up, dancing, then cooling down. Having Lindsay live online was much better than a video because she interacted with Skye and could adjust the lesson to keep her involved. I enjoyed dancing with my daughter and getting a little stretch and workout in each time as well."
"I recommend anyone who is serious about digging deeper into self, character portrayals, and expanding within any area of the Arts industry to seriously co
nsider working with John as an inspiring instructor and mentor.
John is an excellent teacher who knows how to assist you in reaching your best personal results. Whether you you’re already an entertainment professional, acting as a hobby, or you just want to see what potential lies within you for a career in the Arts, John can assist you in discovering your strongest path.
Since I was a student in his Oakland Technical High School Drama class, John’s honesty, expertise, and patience has been extremely instrumental in every aspect of my career. The improvisational instruction, memorization techniques, professional dramatic arts techniques, and relevant advice he taught me over the years has led me to write and perform more than a dozen plays. John and I reconnected 27 years later while I worked as a professional journalist with Public Radio, and he became the creative advisor for my touring theatrical production.
By working one-on-one with John, I have taken my performing arts to career heights I never predicted possible with my modest dreams as his 9th grade Drama student. It’s because of John that I have further developed my own signature style in improvisation, drama, literary arts, and the entertainment industry. Now it’s your turn to fly with John and see what heights your talent can take you to soar!"
"Bill prepared for the lesson in advance. He is supportive but provides important critiques. Knowledge, experience, warmth!"
Contemporary dance is the most expressive and subjective dance form, making it more accessible to outsiders and helpful as a supplement to other dance training. Contemporary choreography techniques help dancers harness the energy and emotion of their own bodies, resulting in a more fluid and organic form of movement that can appear effortless and completely improvised to the casual observer.
