About Crystal
Crystal brings a lifetime’s experience of professional musicianship to each of her lessons. Born into a family of musicians, she sang her first solo at age 2. She also benefits her students with an extraordinarily diverse musical background, having worked as a vocalist in gospel, country, musical theater, jazz, classical, rock, pop and soul styles. Her performing career has taken her from L.A. church meetings to London’s Houses of Parliament.

Crystal hails originally from Los Angeles, CA - where her musical parents gave her a head start by including her in the family business the moment she was able to contribute. She went on to study classical voice, piano and music theory at The Boston Conservatory of Music. After concluding her studies in London, she returned home and began working regularly as a theater performer, appearing in twen
ty world premiers and re-imagined classics. Most notably she played the lead role of Keely Smith in the big band jazz musical “Louis and Keely: Live At The Sahara” during its eight-month run at Westwood’s Geffen Playhouse. She also formed her own rock band, The Honeysuckle Jones Revival, with whom she performed her own songs all over Los Angeles. And she began working as a studio session vocalist, providing demo vocals for other songwriters, as well as arranging and performing back-up vocals for original artists, including Laura Roppe (currently in the Top Ten on Billboard’s Uncharted list of emerging artists.) Crystal played the lead role of Brooke in the new operatic rock musical “The Burning Opera LA” during its Los Angeles run in 2011 as well as providing ensemble vocals and playing piano and bass. She also performs holiday tunes from the Golden Age of American songwriting with musical quartet The Sleigh Belles.

Crystal believes that music is serious business but that it should be fun. She encourages her students to play music they love, as well as expanding their musical knowledge. She is a firm believer in basics first and emphasizes theory and technique as the tools to support creativity and provide freedom, power and control. She believes effort beats talent every time and the student who practices consistently will see results, whatever their level of ability. Most of all, she believes we were all born to make music.

*** Lesson Details ***
Lesson structure varies depending on the student's instrument, age, level of experience and musical style. However, all lessons focus on:

Love how she teaches the mechanics of learning to sing properly such as breathing correctly and posture right from the start for a beginner. Fantastic instructor!

Amazing singng instructor

Crystal has increased my daughter’s self-esteem and expressiveness through song. My daughter is now writing her own poetry and song lyrics, as well as being able to combat her once shyness quality. She loves to perform in front of others now and has a confidence level that amazes me, especially now that she is going into those “teen” years. I think a lot of thanks needs to go to Crystal, for assisting my daughter in reaching her current creative level!

Great piano instructor

Crystal is an amazing piano instructor. She is patient, understanding and dedicated. My daughter has learned so much from her. My daughter’s love for music has increased immensely since learning how to play the piano. This would never have been able to be accomplished without Crystal’s professional and caring teaching style.

Great job getting my daughter who is not afraid to sing in front of people to open her voice up even further. She just preformed as a lead in a play and displayed what she has learned very well

Alyssa is an upbeat, encouraging, and patient teacher. Her own singing voice is beautiful, and she sings very professionally in a wide range of genres. She is reliable, pleasant, sincere, and capable. She gives each student her full attention and tailors her lessons to each one's particular talent (as well as where they're in need of improvement). I recommend Alyssa very highly... She's delightful!

As a former student at a performing arts school with a dedication to social activist projects, government and acting may seem like a weird combination. They're not, I promise. I've learned so many lessons, but the most important being that the theater is the gateway to getting people to wake up and focus on issues around them. My resume includes six shows on stage, working with summits in Washington, D.C., and serving on panels that focus specifically on civic engagement.

About EMILY
Having been a teacher/tutor for many years, including improv, theater, elementary school math, English & reading comprehension. My style is patient, yet focused on learning and pushing boundaries, while making sure my students have fun and enjoy learning.

I was Adjunct Faculty at Clark University for 5 years in the Visual and Performing Arts Department, after that I unofficially tutored many of my friends & family in various subjects, mostly math and essays.

It's important to me to learn how the students I work with learn, organize themselves & absorb information, because everyone is different. There is no right way to teach each person. I want to take the time to get to know you as a student, so we can work in the most productive way possible. I love those magical moments where a challenging concept clicks, or when a student finds th
e fun in a subject that may have felt tedious - they've found a reason to WANT to learn. I want to bring that positive energy to everyone I tutor.

I majored in French in undergrad, studied abroad in Dijon, where I became fluent, and have traveled back many times, to preserve my French language. My strengths are in the beginning stages, where you're learning all of the basic phrases and things begin to come together. I also prefer to teach French through French, rather than translation through English.

I've been a writer & avid reader my entire life. I was always the friend that edited my friend's papers/grammar, loving to discuss the language and learning/understanding why we write things the way we do. I have a good eye for detail as well, which helps with proofreading.

I want to bring positive, fun thoughts to your education. It doesn't have to be difficult and tedious - we can learn and grow, through the lens of excitement. If you work with me you, you will get a patient, compassionate tutor that wants you to be the best version of you that you can be. We will work together to ensure that happens.
