I am a professional singer, songwriter and actor working in the Chicago area for many years. I have a B.F.A. in Theater/Voice from The University of Kansas and an M.A. in Interdisciplinary Arts from Columbia College Chicago. I've been teaching private vocal instruction since 2003: I host the Singer's Salon in Chicago, a unique and supportive venue for singer's to become more comfortable performing before an audience. I also instruct workshops for vocal technique and performance. For 10 years I was the lead singer for The Red Apples, an acoustic/electric roots band that performed an eclectic mix of rock, swing, blues, country and jazz. Within the past year I have re-energized my theater and cabaret career, appearing at Davenport's Cabaret, in a new solo show, as well as productions at Big Noise Theater and Stage 773. I've also completed tw
o short films and started working on my own web series, about my life as a singer/voice teacher. I also have an art song project consisting of original material with composer Jaroslaw Golembiowski. As a singer and actress I have performed with many major theaters in the Chicago area, including Court Theater, Victory Gardens, National Jewish Theater, Bailiwick Theater, and Prop Theater.
*** Lesson Details *** As a classically trained singer I will instruct you in all aspects of singing technique, from breath control and support to improving your tone, range, flexibility and resonance. I have recently completed training in Somatic Voicework, The LoVetri Method, which has enriched my understanding of the mechanics and health of the voice, as well as applications of technique to CCM or contemporary musical styles of singing. My familiarity with a variety of musical styles from pop/rock, R&B, and country, to musical theater, lounge and jazz makes me an ideal teacher for those interested in contemporary styles.
I have spent many years developing my own style of singing and instruction. I draw on my experiences and training not only in music, but theater and movement, (Linklater, Alexander Technique, Grotowski) to create a well rounded approach to singing and performing. As an instructor, I am most interested in helping students find their true voice and artistic style. I teach students to find expression through and with a foundation of technique, rather then in spite of it. I also am very interested in helping students deal with the mental/emotional aspects of performance, an all important area so frequently ignored by music teachers. My style is nurturing, yet disciplined, and sprinkled liberally with good-natured humor."

*** Specialties *** I am classically trained, but I am very adept at teaching music in a wide variety of styles, including most contemporary styles of music including pop/rock, roots, swing, jazz and blues, country, r&b, and of course musical theater and cabaret. I have many years of experience in the theater as an actress, and I coach acting technique and performance. I coach singer/songwriters, and all types of singers, of all ages. Daniel, a former faculty member of Columbia College in Chicago, is a studio and live performance singer and musician based in Chicago. His teaching and performing experience spans three decades, and includes expertise in the studies of voice, guitar, piano, bass, drums, and trumpet, along with music theory, arranging, and composing. He is a Lincoln Academy Student Laureate who holds a BA in Music Composition, and has attended graduate courses in education at Roosevelt University and DePaul University in Chicago. He has taught students of all ages at private studios, public school, and college.
Daniel is described by his students as a natural teacher. He prefers to be regarded as an advancing student, and takes the journey along with his students to guide them towards their goals with a friendly, positive, efficient and productive appro
ach. He feels that music is within all of us, and a desire to learn is a sign of talent, so anyone can develop their musical abilities with methodical practice.
The musical journey for Daniel began at an early age with trumpet and piano studies which became a passion for him by the age of 14. He was the drum major of the high school marching band, and successfully completed a paid contract to arrange music for the high school jazz band which performed in a state beauty pageant. He began teaching privately after high school, and continued playing in bands, and composing original music. He formed a professional jazz ensemble under the name of the Chicago Jazz Players by the age of 22, and developed his arranging techniques while having it performed by an eighteen piece orchestra consisting of many great local artists. It was in this environment that he gained experience with brass, woodwinds, and rhythm instruments. He was granted a position at Columbia College as an instructor at age 29 where he taught theory, sight singing, musicianship, ear training, harmony, orchestration, and composition. He scored the music for several plays, and conducted his own pieces with Chicago Symphony and Lyric Opera Players. During those years he found himself playing the guitar and singing more than anything else. It was in 1995 that he focused on singing and playing the guitar with his rock band. He has produced several CD recordings of his original music in his own studio, and has helped produce local bands and artists. He performs regularly in the Chicago area.
*** Lesson Details *** Daniel exhibits patience and care with each student, and develops an individualized approach based on clear goals with practical procedures. Most beginners can expect to have a working knowledge of music notation and how it applies to their instrument within three months, and should be developing fluency in performing music that they enjoy within six months. Advancing students will enjoy the rewards that will follow by studying with an experienced teaching musician that will recognize strengths and weaknesses, and recommend proven techniques for personal musical development. Studying music should be fun, fulfilling, and in harmony with the needs and desires of the student, and this is key to the philosophy held by Daniel.

It was only a first lesson but I can already tell I'm going to be taking more lessons with Daniel. He's very knowledgeable, patient, and dedicated. He detailed a specific plan for me to work on that isn't too rigid or boring, I'm looking forward to relearning the flute with him.

I have been working as a freelance musician and private instructor in Chicago for fifteen years. During this time I have been hired to perform Jazz, Rock, R/B, and world music. As an instructor I have maintained a studio of five to twenty students on a weekly basis. I hold a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Northern Colorado in Percussion Performance, and a Master of Music degree from De Paul University in Jazz Studies.
*** Lesson Details *** With committed weekly practice there are no limits to a student's potential. I like to use the term guide to describe my teaching style. In a relaxed atmosphere, the student and I are working together to advance their musical goals. Sometimes goals are reached quickly, more often we need more time and repetition to advance. The mind learns quicker than the body, so focused
practice will help train the body and bring it to the mind's level.

Jeff has been great with my 7 year old son learning Djembe and Bongos. Jeff gives clear concise instructions and practices the skills with him to work on during the week. My son is easily distracted and Jeff is very flexible and listens to what he has to say, using is as a way to teach and redirects. My son can't wait to go to class every week!

To become a complete package, I studied classical piano and vocal performance at Sherwood Conservatory of Music and VanderCook College of Music; martial arts (Hapkido) at Hyun's; Fashion Design and Merchandise Management at International Academy of Design & Technology; herbal medicine at The School of Natural Healing; acting and musical improvisation at ETA Theatre and The Second City; flag, rifle and sabre twirling with South Shore Drill Team and runway/print modeling at Barbizon and The Fashion Connection. I have also studied tap, liturgical, ballet, modern, salsa, ballroom and street dance; speech therapy; actively study psychology, anatomy and nutrition and am a NESTA-certified wellness coach.

*** Lesson Details *** Each lesson is tailor-made to suit the student's individual needs. Custom action plan will be given to each student on a case-by-case basis. No instruments are used in my lessons, as I train the voice to be a standalone instrument. However, if you would like to accompany yourself with a guitar, piano or percussion instrument, you are very welcome to do so.
*Please note that 15-minute sessions are ONLY available online. In-person sessions must be a minimum of 30 minutes. 31 and 61-minute sessions are for whistle register training only.

Margo was amazing! I went to Margo to improve my speech and speaking voice. Within a few minutes of talking to me, Margo diagnosed my problem and gave me execercises to do. I saw improvements in my speech after the first session! Her fun personality made the sessions enjoyable and I walked away with helpful excercises.
I’ve had the chance to learn from some of the greatest, and I am STILL learning from ‘em!
I think anyone can and should sing. Why? Simple. Singing is FUN . Singing is FREEING. You’ve got a voice- why not use it, and as often as possible? I’m different than most voice teachers. I don’t make you practice. If you’re happy, I’m happy! If that means you want a lesson of all vocal exercises, cool! Maybe you don’t like your speaking voice and want that to be stronger for either professional or personal reasons. I do that, too. Andrewis a fantastic teacher that unlocks your true potential! Only serious actors should go to Joe, since he will not coddle you like most other acting coaches.
In just 1 class you WILL be acting in at least 3 scenes, AT LEAST. He will unlock your full potential and sometimes that means digging deep into yourself, making you learn or confront some possibly scary things about yourself.
Despite this hard working down-and-dirty nature, he is an extremely warm, kind and fun person.
His critiques are genius and he always seems to know exactly what to say to make you understand and to help you.
I cannot recommend Joe more highly, he is amazing!
