I teach and tutor in American Sign Language from the perspective of one who came into ASL and the Deaf community without a thought of being a professional in a related field. Still, I did become a professional interpreter, teacher, tutor, mentor and have been a service-provider, advocate and friend with many Deaf since 1984.

I want my students to learn that fear and anxiety in undertaking a new adventure are usually of our own making, and that learning about other cultures and languages by association with native users is so valuable.

Therefore, my classes are highly interactive and immersive; students will be required often to learn voice-off, role-play sign language / deaf experience situations, complete tasks between classes, and engage fully. Focus will be on conversational quality, grammatical structures, situational encounters, expressive and receptive language skills.

I will provide curriculum and, as needed, written information and videos used.

I offer:

Thank you Allison for a great intro!

I have known Allison for many years. In all that time, she has always advocated for the needs of the individual. This is one of her qualities that makes her a great teacher. She has a lot of experience in the Deaf community through interactions, experience and education. She is helpful, knowledgeable, thorough, and willing to make the extra effort to get a job done well. She is also very enjoyable, funny, and easy to get along with. She has been the “go to” person in the Deaf community for as long as I have known her.

I have been part of the Deaf world most of my life. I learned sign 20 years ago and have since then been part of the Deaf/ HOH community. I have taught sign language several times over the course of 20 years. I've taught parents of Deaf children, hard-of-hearing individuals, and children who wanted to learn because of a Deaf sibling or other family member. I've taught in a Deaf school as well.

About Jamie

Do you want to learn how to communicate with the Deaf? Are you intrigued by the use of sign language? Come learn with me. I am Deaf and I use American Sign Language. My brother is also Deaf, so we grew up using ASL together and at school. I have been teaching online for the past 5 years, and I love teaching others how to improve their communication skills in ASL. Sign language is one of the most expressive languages, have you seen an interpreter recently on the new? Have you noticed how fast they move their fingers, and make a variety of facial expressions. I can help you, no matter what level of ASL you know, I want to help you make progress and become fluent. I have a toddler and he is learning ASL, if he can, you can! See you in the classroom!

About Serfirys

"My daughter absolutely enjoys her time with Joy. She has always had a desire to learn ASL but there were no consistent opportunities for such an education. When she found out that ASL would meet her foreign language requirement, she started searching and found Take Lessons, which led her to Joy. Joy has a teaching style that has increased my daughter's passion for ASL...so much so, that she intends to continue her ASL education through the college level. If you or your child are serious about learning ASL, I highly recommend Joy. She should be in the schools with this."

What's the Difference Between ASL & BSL?

Have you been wondering, "What's the difference between ASL and BSL?" This is a great question, and deserves a little more background. First of all, did you know that sign language is not universal? Just like there are numerous spoken languages (around 6,500) used across the globe, there are also many sign languages (somewhere between 138-300) used by various Deaf communities. Though it’s a common belief, sign languages do not stem from a country’s spoken language. The natural develo …
