I've been teaching American Sign Language for 5 years, and signing myself for 18 years, and my students have gone on to develop a love for ASL, Deaf people, and Deaf culture. Within the first few lessons, you'll be able to carry on a simple conversation in the language, and as time goes on you'll be able to feel totally at ease with Deaf people. I have great online tools you can use for free to practice between lessons, and I'm flexible with any other resources we use. I can't wait to meet you!
I have been signing since 1998, spending every chance I can among my Deaf friends and immersing myself in the language as often as possible. I received my BA in Music with a certification to teach at Lubbock Christian University in 1998. Later I attended the Interpreter Certification program at Burlington County College in New Jersey from 2009-2011, and during that time took a summer course at Gallaudet University for the Deaf in Washington DC. Then in 2014 I received my MEd in Curriculum and Instruction with Instructional Technology from Houston Baptist University. I have been teaching ASL at the high school level since 2011. I am also one of the interpreters for the Deaf at my church in Fort Bend County, TX, outside of Houston, where I am a member and actively involved in the Deaf Ministry.
Please feel free to ask me any questions y
ou have. I'm happy to get back with you, and I look forward to teaching you!
Congratulations on taking the first step to learn the beautiful language of ASL! After studying under Deaf professors myself, I am thrilled to offer you help along your learning journey! I offer between 25-30 ASL lessons which will help a complete novice cover all of the ASL beginner lessons and learn about Deaf history and culture.
Want to learn to speak Spanish? Sign ASL? I would love to be a part of your journey! I am a patient, and friendly person, who is passionate about language learning!
SPANISH: I use my own personal learning experience mixed with a communicative approach to create a teaching method for my Spanish students. My Spanish teaching method focuses on the development of these four skills: speaking, listening, reading, and then writing. Do you have specific goals? Great! Or are you learning just to be able to speak any and all that you can? Awesome! I teach beginner and intermediate and am a conversation partner and tutor for students more advanced! Also be prepared to be challenged to get involved with the Latin American culture around you!
ASL: My lessons will give you a strong foundation in Sign, and then a few training wheels until you fee
l confident in what you know, and can converse about various real-life topics. My teaching method utilizes much of Deaf professor Dr. Bill Vicars' approach--with signed conversation in each lesson beginning with high frequency concepts. Each lesson is full of new signs, grammar, conversation, Deaf culture tidbits, and more.
About me: I fell in love with language when in 2010 I lived, studied, and worked abroad in Colombia, South America. There I studied Spanish, worked with Deaf students, and taught Spanish speakers English. It was such an enriching experience that upon returning to the USA, I decided to fully surround myself with culturally diverse individuals and continue my learning journey.
One of the major differences between learning a language in a classroom and having a personal instructor is that one-on-one help you will receive --- specific to your level, learning style, and language goals. I will help you stop feeling nervous, renew your motivation, and get you communicating in a new language in no time!!
I just had my first lesson on TakeLessons and couldn't have picked a better instructor. Joy moves at a pace well-suited to my current comprehension of ASL and pays attention to every aspect of how I'm signing in order to help me improve. Loved it!
NEW!!! I am now offering 15 minute CHAT sessions. These are great for just chatting, brushing up on skills, etc. NO VOICE chat sessions! NO VOICE mentor or quick practice sessions! Use them how you would like!
I've been teaching ASL for 21 years and my students have gone on to develop a deep love of ASL and Deaf culture! I am passionate about teaching, Deaf ministry, and ASL! Within the first few lessons, you'll start signing simple sentences and as time goes on, you'll be able to converse with people who are Deaf! You will also be learning about the culture of Deaf people at the same time.
PRACTICE PARTNER/SIGN COACH? Nervous about meeting people who are deaf? Want to learn some tips to get over those first moments of nervousness? Do you just need someone to practice with? I would love to help you!
Some of my students book private lessons with me just to have someone to chat with and practice. The more you practice, the more confidence you will have. Sign up
Thank you so much for checking out my profile! My name is Tony and I've been teaching formal and private lessons since 1996 and have loved helping my students learn American Sign Language while developing confidence in their skills. I went to Harding University and was trained and tutored by a Master ASL Instructor (CODA) as well as the Deaf community.
My former students have gone on to become Interpreters for the Deaf, Deaf Education Teachers, ASL Teachers, and leaders in Deaf ministry. In fact, I now teach with one of my former ASL students!
I'm a patient and fun person and my teaching style is highly interactive. I look forward to helping you reach your goals!
Please keep in mind that it is very important to practice in between sessions and complete all the suggested activities to help you accomplish your goals faster. ASL
is a VISUAL language and does not follow English grammar rules. ASL has its own grammar and syntax. In fact 50% of the language is comprised of nonmanual behaviors.
My favorite thing about teaching is getting to know my students. Every once in a while I will have a student that wants to be mentored beyond ASL skills and wants further mentoring in learning how to be the best they can be.
I enjoy teaching the Bible class for the Deaf at church as well as being involved in the Deaf community in this area. The Deaf community is a wonderful, vibrant, and very close knit group of people.
Thanks again for reading my bio. I hope to meet you soon!
Very clear to understand, patient, encourages me to try instead of doing things for me. I'm walking away from my first lesson much further along than I would have expected and feeling very positive about the experience. Thanks, Tony!

I studied American Sign Language. I taught ASL and I did the tutor. I enjoyed teaching my unique language and culture. That made students very motivated and interesting to communicate with the Deaf community.
I am Deaf. I know American Sign Language (ASL) for my whole life and it is my first language. I studied ASL Studies at university. Not only ASL, but learn about grammar structure, linguistics, and history. I have been taught ASL for a couple of months at college and high school. I love to teach and tell people how to love the language and how it is different than other languages.
"I have taken a few TakeLessonsLive classes (covering vocabulary relating to holidays, months, animals, and weather) with Victoria and have enjoyed them im
mensely. I have learned a great deal. In particular, I found it very helpful how she encourages the students to put the vocabulary/topics covered in the lessons into practice at the end of the classes. Having the students communicate with one another, using the vocabulary/topics that have been introduced, is an excellent way to reinforce what has been covered during the lessons."
"She is amazing and I learned a lot in the 30 mins I was with her in our first lesson."
"LOVE Carla! She is the epitome of excellence in education. Anyone who wants to learn ASL or just grow personally (and spiritually!) should sign up for ASL
lessons with Carla. She sets the standard for education and is honestly-a blessing."
"I've been taking ASL lessons from Victoria for a few months now, and I am extremely grateful for her kindness, patience, and sense of humor! She is extrem
ely down to earth and is a wonderful teacher! I have learned so much in such a short time! 10/10 would recommend!"
"Very very helpful. Enjoyed sitting down and going over ASL signs. Thank you again."
"I was having issues with my computer, and she was awesome in working around them! I had no sound on my computer, but she worked with me anyway! She's a
"Shes awesome !!"
"Tony Slate is the reason I became a Deaf education teacher. Learning sign language from Tony was the best decision I have made. I learn under Tony for abo
ut three years while I was in high school. I firmly believe that my signing skills would not be where they are today if it was not for him. When I began college my signing skills were easily above the majority of the students begins at the same or even higher level than me. I would recommend lessons from Tony to any one that wants to learn American Sign Language. He is dedicated, passionate and knownadlage."
