A breath of fresh air!

Natalie was outstanding in preparing our 12 y.o. for a poetry recitation. She guided him through all elements of the poem from interpretation to his style of delivery and presentation. He did a great job and has Natalie to thank for it. Highly recommended!

It is my grasp of foreign languages that makes me an effective English teacher. For instance, learning the complex grammar of Latin and Greek gave me a thorough understanding of English grammar and the ability to relate to other people’s native languages. I have spent many hours proofreading papers for international students. They find my instruction especially informative because I not only fix mistakes but provide an explanation. When I point out the patterns of grammar, similar mistakes show up less and less, and my students feel more confident that they are writing sentences correctly.

I learned English teaching methods through my tutoring experience. Over a span of four months, I gave a Turkish visiting scholar a systematic overview of English grammar and allowed him to apply it through conversation.

As I have done with my community college students for the past 35 years, I put my students at ease by saying that I know they have not received adequate grammar instruction, nor have they been shown the writing process stages in high school. So what they are about to acquire is no review but a step-by-step introduction to college writing. We work through the writing stages to develop types of essays.

Charis C.

Brooklyn, NY

I am an award-winning, published writer of fiction and non-fiction, and have edited and coached the writing of everyone from prize-winning authors to emerging ones, as well as teaching writing to students of all ages. Over the course of thirty years, I've taught writing at every level, both one-on-one and in public and private school classrooms, as well as other settings. My students have included kindergarten, elementary, middle, high school, college, and graduate students; people with books or other projects they want to write or have written; immigrants, at-risk youth, prisoners, hospital patients, and everyone in between. I am as excellent at heightening the level of a child’s school work as I am at turning a book author into a best seller. Authors whose published books I have helped with include: Laurie Garrett, Eric Metaxas, Roya Hakakian, Ethan Watters, Suki Kim, and many of my Harper’s authors, who went on to include my early advice in the versions they later used in their ...

Charis is brilliant. Her marvelous sense of humor, curiosity, and expertise with language, literature and the making of beautiful things, would make learning anything with her a pure delight, as well as a privilege. As it happens, she is a masterful writer, editor and expediter of creative dreams -in a genuinely original, even magical way- every time I see her, I find I've got five new ideas and my sense of reality feels enlivened and enlarged.

As a former Journalism student, writing has been the number one way I learned to communicate both academically and professionally. It's important to be able to distill highly technical information into language anyone can read, and not only can read, but enjoys reading. I had three mentors in the past who helped hone my writing skills, and I love applying what I learned from them with my own students today.
