About Shaheed S.

Close

I’m a graduate of the University of Southern California, with my MAT in TESOL, and a B.A. in Dramatic Arts/Entrepreneurship. I’m thankful to have been awarded USC’s Jack Nicholson Award for Outstanding Undergraduate Actor. I use my theatre arts background to teach reading strategies, pronunciation, vocabulary, effective academic writing, and speaking.

For pronunciation, I work to make your listeners understand you better, placing an emphasis on the proper intonation and stress patterns.

For writing, we'll practice opening essays with a hook, closing memorably, elaborating on points, choosing a powerful thesis, and writing under pressure.

About Shaheed
Shaheed is a graduate of the University of Southern California, with a Master of Arts in Teaching- TESOL, a B.A. in Dramatic Arts (Jack Nicholson Award winner), and a minor in Entrepreneurship. He has taught EFL & ESL learners and teachers in China, Los Angeles, Malaysia, and South Korea, plus facilitated workshops in Brunei, Cambodia, Myanmar, the Philippines, and Thailand. As an English Language Fellow with the U.S. Department of State (2014-2016), he worked directly with the U.S. Embassy in Kuala Lumpur, local teachers, students, and education professionals to enact meaningful and sustainable changes in the way English was taught. In 2017, he taught at Irvine Valley College, helping adult-ESL students develop the language skills they needed in order to thrive in the United States. From 2018-2019, he was the Senior Teacher at Aidi Middl
e School in Beijing. Currently, Shaheed teaches reading and speaking to Chinese preschool-elementary school students online with VIPKid, and has taught more than 800 students over the past year.

Shaheed had the opportunity to teach Business English at University Malaysia Kelantan (UMK), the only entrepreneurship university in Malaysia. He also worked on curriculum development, facilitated over 100 workshops throughout six countries in Southeast Asia, trained teachers, coached Ministry of Education officials, and supported the U.S. Embassy’s English ACCESS Microscholarship program. During his time as a Fellow, he started the edcamp “unconference” movement in Malaysia, presented at regional TESOL conferences, and won Gold for “Best Workshop” at the International Conference on English Language Teaching (ICELT). In 20 months, he taught 3,006 students and trained 2,940 teachers in the East Asia and Pacific region.

Each session will have a check-in assessing what your goals are for the lesson that day. We will review spoken english, written, and reading based on your current level.

About Shelley
I'm a professional singer/teacher residing in New York City with degrees from Indiana State University, and New York University with a specialization in Classical Art Song, Musical Theatre Repertoire, and Vocal Pedagogy.

Every lesson is about YOU. So each week we will take a look at your goals for the lesson, whether you are preparing for college auditions, school talents shows, a desire to work with music theory, or piano skills, this is your opportunity to explore. Everything is possible.

As a professional singer myself, I am constantly auditioning on broadway, off-broadway, and for smaller local and regional theater opportunities. I believe that as a teacher I have to continue to be in the field and learning as the industry continues to change. I have to be aware of the opportunities in this business. I have been hired by pr
ofessional opera and musical theatre companies, in additional to large choral works as a soloist, and have a private studio in Washington Heights.

Prior to NYC I taught middle school choir for 200+ students, of which I received teacher of the year in 2012. I also still hold a valid teaching license in the state of Indiana and currently applying toward my NYS teaching certification.

Within my voice studio I teach in person and online lessons. While online lessons can be beneficial for students wishing to study with me that are not in the immediate vicinity, I recommend in person lessons

I look forward to hearing your beautiful voice and helping you to embrace music!

Shelley is by far the best voice teacher I have ever had. Within the short duration of time that I have worked with her, I have noticed that my voice has significantly changed (it feels and sounds better) after using her techniques. She knows what she’s talking about and offers substantial and specific criticism. She individualizes every student, in that she chooses repertoire that benefits a particular voice instead of assuming that every student has the same voice and strengths/weaknesses. This is a very important skill for a voice teacher to have. Shelley is also very good at time management within a lesson. Most importantly, she makes the experience fun! I would highly recommend Shelley to anyone who is looking for a voice teacher! Thank you Shelley!

Shelley is amazing! All my old teachers always told me to breathe to release the tension in my voice, but Shelley taught me vocal warmups to ease the strain. I now can sing better and connect to lyrics.

Interested in improving your English writing for IELTS, work, school, or any other purpose? Join the popular and growing writing program! There are two options for this program:

1. Journal Writing

1-7 times per week, you will write a paragraph or two about your day or about something happening in your life--what you did, what you are thinking about, a project you are working on, etc. I will edit your writing, showing you not only grammar and spelling mistakes, but also suggesting alternative sentences to show how you can express your ideas in an eloquent, native-sounding, colloquial way. As you integrate the suggestions over time, your writing will improve more and more!

2. Assigned Writing Topics

Under this program, you will write about topics I assign based on what you want/need to work on. For example, if your goal is to improve the emails you write at work, this is what we'll work on. If your goal is to gain vocabulary, you'll be given a list of vocabulary words, definitions, and examples and a topic to write about, with the instruction to use the new vocabulary words in your writing. The assignments are personalised based on YOU.

ABOUT ME:

Although I am new on Take Lessons, for the past 5 years I have been teaching students of many ages, backgrounds and abilities both online and in person. By now I've taught hundreds of students from all over the world! I love this job for 2 reasons:

1. I love to travel! I have been traveling and living overseas for most of the past 8 years and have spent time living, volunteering, working, and exploring all over Asia, Europe, Australia, and more. So far I have been to 30 countries! This job allows me to travel, which I love.

2. When I teach online, it's almost like traveling without ever having to leave my computer. The world comes to me! Sometimes I think that I learn just as much as the students just from talking with people from different places and backgrounds.

Aside from teaching English and traveling, I like: yoga, meditation/mindfulness practice, visiting eco-communities, bouldering and rock climbing, baking and cooking, and board games.

Whoever and wherever you are, it would be my pleasure to work with you. Hope to talk with you soon!

Finally reading and basic music theory is the essential skill that separates men from minnows in the sense of making music consistent. The discipline necessary to do this is minimal but important. I trust that you will excel in my class because my methods are tried and true. If at the end of the first lesson you feel you will not progress on your mission with me I completely understand but do think that will be unlikely as I want to share with you my deepest thoughts on how this can be done and in return you will receive the best education possible.

Thank you for your time and I look forward to providing you with some great lessons!

Although English idioms don't make sense at first, these unique expressions (together with proverbs) add substance and humor to our conversations. The Oxford Dictionary defines the word "idiom" as a: "group of words established by usage as having a meaning not deducible from those of the individual words (e.g. over the moon, see the light)." This means that English idioms should not be taken literally, because their meaning is metaphorical. You don't really wish someone would “break a
