I'm a 'classically trained' voice teacher who specializes in the biology of singing: JAZZ, R&B, POP and GOSPEL. I have performance arts training and experience and have
a liberal arts degree from Columbia University/Master of Arts Education from City College of NY.
Before settling into a music career, worked as a dance instructor, for the City of NY and received congrats from John Lindsey, then mayor, for outstanding achievement.

WORKSHOP FOR LEARNING TO SING
COMPETENCY: A SOLID FOUNDATION IN THE BASICS OF SINGING
OBJECTIVE: Students will learn Basic Components of Singing and demonstrate via public (by choice) performance; at the end of course.
Pitch
Rhythm
Breath
Voice
Diction
Pitch
The use of pitch in language to distinguish words. All languages use intonation to express emphasis, contrast, emotion, or other such nuances.
Pitch refers to the notes and sounds that we hear when someone sings, and it determines if the song is going to sound great or not. The singer will have to hit various pitches in a song with a relative amount of accuracy in order to be in tune with the overall music accompaniment and harmonies.
RHYTHM
Every song has a certain beat, and it is essential that we keep to the basic rhythm of the song, or else we might find that we are constantly trying to catch up with the lyrics or always lagging behind. Rhythm also determines the groove of the song, and this is what gets us on our feet and dancing when we listen to upbeat or fast tempo songs.
A great sense of rhythm begins with learning to recognize various beat duration, to vocalize notes with different beats, as well as to be able to keep to the basic tempo of a song.
BREATH CONTROL
Breathing is an essential component of singing, and is what most singing instructors would introduce to students during their first lesson for singing. It is also what most people would want to learn about and also ask questions about.
Breathing is a natural process, and it is not difficult to achieve better breath control for singing. A great breath foundation is needed for singing!
VOICE
To produce great sounds when singing it is essential to adopt beneficial singing habits in order to produce sounds that are more relaxed and healthy.
DICTION
Learning how to produce sound with our voice is not enough. We still need to shape our voice, and form words in a language that our audience will understand.
This is why diction is also one of the vital basics of singing, because it determines whether our audience understands what we are singing, and whether we are able to connect with them through our song. Diction is also a key factor towards hitting the correct pitches, especially for the high notes, and this will be explained in detail.

COURSE OUTLINE:
Lesson 1 PITCH
How to avoid the most common singing mistakes that prevent singers from producing a clean and professional vocal tone.
Objective: Students will learn warm up exercises that strengthen vocal cords and loosen the muscles needed to produce a professional sound./ the importance of singing ‘scales’ to achieve this objective.
Lesson 2 RHYTHM
Rhythms often used in various standard songs.
Objective: Students will listen and learn to identify rhythms used in songs. CD player provided.
Students will learn to tap out the various types of rhythm.
Students will sing a favorite song; using rhythms learned in class.
Lesson 3 BREATH
For the purpose of voice projection, students will learn to breath more from the diaphragm, the muscles beneath the ribcage, as well as the abdominal muscles.
Objective: Students will learn vital techniques to create a connected voice blending head, chest and diaphragm.
Lesson 5 DICTION
How to use the emotions, enunciation and clarity.
Objective: Students will learn to sing a favorite song with focus on elements of singing.
Lesson 6 Review of previous 5 lessons.
Lesson 7 Group/Individual Performances
Objective: Students will show confidence in employing elements from training.
Lessons 8/9/10 Rehearsal for recital TBA
*Each lesson to begin with a brief review of previous. Copies of previous lessons/homework assignments to be distributed at each meeting

I have been a voice, acting, and teacher of creative arts for over 25 years. My background includes ten years of classical training with Maestro Julio Berrocal, as well as vocal training through the Feldekrais approach with Marcy Lindhiemer. Voice
I am an empathetic teacher, sensitive to the students individual process of learning. My singing lessons usually start with breathing and relaxation exercises. Vocal exercise come next, then when the student is fully warmed up, we will begin to work on songs. It is important that the student be part of the process of picking material since the more they personally respond to the material the more apt they are to be engaged in their lessons and the more quickly they will learn. After three to six months they will understand the fundamentals of breathing and relaxation and its importance to proper vocal training. They will have begun the process of extending their range and will understand the principles of performance in song.
Acting
As an acting teacher and coach, I tailor my classes to the needs of each student. I utilize improvisatory and sensory techniques to help unleash spontaneity. I also encourage the students to use their personal experiences as a way to access a full range of emotions. I enjoy working with the student on script analysis, so as to discover the underlying motivations of the character the student is working on.
Creative and Lyric Writing
I use prompts as a way to get the student writing. Often, I will ask the student to write for stretches of time without editing themselves. It is important to unleash imagination before beginning the process of editing. Many times it is the unexpected that is the must compelling.

Started working with Marjorie on a whim. It turned out to be one of the best spur of the moment decisions I've ever made. To start off, I had absolutely no background in singing. I do a lot of public speaking so wanted to work on my enunciation. So I decided to go the extreme and learn to sing. If you can sing in front of people, you have no problem enunciating.

Marjorie has a wide range of students, from beginners to advanced. One thing you can be certain about her is that she has a passion for teaching and loves teaching beginners. The commitment to help you improve is there. In my opinion, that is what you want in a teacher. I have the utmost confidence in recommending Marjorie to someone who is looking for a teacher.

What happens in a Lesson? In order to train your physical voice, it is necessary to do vocal exercises, in the same way that one needs to train at a gym. There is no "magic key" to unlock one's voice; it is a matter of daily practice and muscle strengthening/stretching. So, the first part of the lesson will be focused on vocal exercises specifically tailored to YOUR VOICE and its needs. The second half of the lesson is the fun part- SINGING! My experience with Anthony has helped me to push myself to limits that I could have never imagined, He has given me monologues that i would never have had the courage to even attempt. From our first meeting he fully immersed himself into getting to know me as a person finding out my strength and weakness as an artiste.
He has shown me how very important it is to have technical training, that it can only enhance the natural talents that I have. Last Summer, I worked alongside Eric at French Woods Festival, and not only did Eric make my time more fun, but I also learned new magic techniques that I had never seen before. As well as being an informative teacher, Eric really knew how to engage kids into what he was doing. One memorable experience I had was, when I hopped into a classroom to see what was going on, and one of Eric's students was giving a hilarious invisible deck routine about politics. Having been at French Woods for so long, I have seen many magic teachers come and go, and I can confidently say that Eric is one of the best teachers and performers I have ever seen.

I have been teaching since 2003 and coach students in middle school and up. I specialize in working with kids and young adults and their auditions for schools as well as professional auditions. Julia was my college audition coach to get into acting school, and I am confident that she is the reason I got into the schools I did. I met with her on Skype once a week for about a year/year and half. She coached me on all of my monologues and even gave me acting coaching on songs. She helped me find almost all of my monologues, and was particularly helpful in coaching me on scansion and Shakespeare! Not only did she do all of this, but going through the college audition process herself and being trained at Juilliard, she prepared me for what to expect before I went in to my first audition. She is an absolutely wonderful teacher and would highly recommend her to anyone going through this experience. I am now a Sophomore Acting Major at Syracuse University which was ranked the number 8 acting school in the world this year. I also got into drama schools in Europe. Thank you Julia!! <3

I am a working professional actor in NYC, have been for years. Mostly theater, but I want to do more television. Julia coached me on my audition for a one-day guest star role on The Good Wife, and I booked the job! She is fantastic--very practical and knowledgable, but also very affirming and enthusiastic. She helped me have the confidence to go into the audition room and do my best without the usual self-sabotage. I highly recommend Julia as a coach!

I am a professional dancer and dance teacher based in NYC. I was born in Germany where I have been studying ballet since an early age, later moving to the Netherlands to study at the most renowned European school for Contemporary Dance, Codarts in Rotterdam. I continued my studies at the world famous Alvin Ailey School in NYC and upon completing the scholarship program joined Graham 2, the junior company of the Martha Graham Dance Company. Since then I have joined the Dardo Galletto Dance Company, ARIM Dance, Caterina Rago Dance Company and Alpha Omega Dance Company, being featured in soloist roles. Besides my work as contemporary/ modern dancer I am very passionate about Argentine Tango which I am dancing professionally as well.
