I have been teaching piano for over 40 years, full-time for the past 15. Besides the actual repertoire, technique and theory are always included in my lessons because they are essential. Sight reading and ear training are also included in some lessons.

I stress accuracy in playing and attention to details! I also teach my students HOW to practice. Slow, accurate practice is the answer. Practicing takes patience!

Please note: Home lessons must be at a location that I can get to easily with public transportation. I do not have a car.

About Emil

I started to study the piano at the age of seven with Hrant Minassian in my hometown of Island Park, New York. During high school I continued my studies with Jack Chaikin , a graduate of the Juilliard School. I attended Hofstra University where I received a B.A. in Music in 1979. At Hofstra, my pia

I love to teach and have been teaching since I was a teenager. I was taught by wonderful teachers who were concert pianists from the Russian, German, and French Schools of playing such as Hungarian pianist Bela Siki and Czech pianist Martina Maixnerova. I also studied with Dr. Yeheved Kaplinski. My doctoral degree is in solo piano as well as collaborative piano and have taught all levels of solo performers as well as coach all combinations of chamber ensembles and duo-piano teams. I am well-versed in different technical approaches to adapt to each individual's needs. Your pianistic well-being and advancement is my main objective. I have retrained pianists with improper technique and tension issues which hinder their performance and enjoyment of playing. If given the opportunity I would like to prevent that from happening right at the beginning by providing the correct technical foundation and to retrain if the problem or problems have already ensued. I have taught students from ...

Julian has truly been a God-send for me. A brilliant, musician, technician and teacher. He is intelligent, patient, sensitive…so highly in tune with the voice. To say he knows the instrument well is an understatement.  And, just as important, he knows how to work with you as an individual. He has such a skillful way, as any great teacher should, of explaining what he is trying to convey in a variety of ways to help YOU as the student understand. Not all teachers are able to do that, but Julian can. And he makes sure that you understand so you can be your own technician and master of your instrument. I trust Julian. He has helped me and continues to help me understand and find MY voice.
Tara
I highly recommend Julian as a teacher. Before studying with him, my voice had a growth spurt, and none of the “well known” teachers I had studied with knew what to do with it. My voice was in pieces, and Julian was the only teacher that was able to help me. He rebuilt my voice, and I couldn’t be more grateful.

Julian was able to find my true voice, and I love that I sound like ME! Everyone in the studio has very distinct and different voices from one another. He’s able to find your true and individual vocal potential; he doesn’t just “bandage” the problem. He truly is the best!
Joel
Julian Kwok is a technician's technician. He can take large, unruly instruments and whisper them into efficiently wielded, marketable product. He can develop voices of any type to their full potential, but his specialty is, arguably, large voices. He expects a high level of commitment, so my advice: do the work. Doing the work will maximize your experience. He's keenly sensitive and understanding. If you're serious about a career and developing your voice in a healthy way, this is the guy.

As I have taught many students on many different instruments, my focus has been on providing students with a firm foundation, including proper posture, breathing, embouchure, technique, and pitch/rhythm literacy. Beyond a traditionally classical approach, I believe strongly in listening to my students to realize what they desire to learn. Many students are primarily interested in learning the jazz style, including improvisation, which includes a great deal of listening, transcribing, and practicing of patterns/riffs.

I received classical piano lessons from Dr. Backus for almost two years before college. In those two years, I grew so much in my playing and in my love for music. Dr. Backus has a deep passion for music and her students. In my lessons, Dr. Backus incorporated extensive knowledge about music history, theory and technique. Our goal was to build knowledge and technique so that I could freely create and make a beautiful sound with each piece. After taking lessons from her, I LOVE the piano. Dr. Backus taught me how to express music from my heart, and it was a privilege to learn from her and know her. I would highly recommend her for piano lessons!

I have had the pleasure of knowing, Deborah Joy personally, for over seven years. During the years of our acquaintance, I have gotten to know Deborah in many capacities.

I have always known her to be an intelligent, capable, dedicated, and personable woman of integrity who possess an amazing warmth and compassion.

Deborah also has an excellent rapport with people of all ages. Her excellent communication skills allow her to connect with all kinds of people and to inspire them to put forth their best effort.

Deborah has shown herself to be an exemplary role model always expressing her passion in sharing her talents and creativity with others.

As a performer, I have witnessed Deborah’s ability to demonstrate a strong presence of poise and focus on stage and simultaneously elicit a warmth and charm that engages her audience.

Deborah’s dynamic performances evoke from her audiences a wonderous range of emotion as they experience a journey through her exciting and powerful musical compositions.

As a pianist, the extremes of her dynamic range which requires much refinement of technique and a depth of musical understanding to perform, confirms her excellent musicianship.

Her deep stylistic knowledge and interpretive flourishes in her program of works demonstrate a wide range of techniques and technical difficulty.

Without reservation, I highly recommend Deborah Joy!

"Randy is an amazing piano teacher. He understands how to keep an energy filled 9 year old boy interested and excited to learn! Randy is on top of all the technology trends and helps incorporate them into his students lessons. Randy's passion for music shines every time we see him. Randy has helped my son to be more confident not only playing piano but also in life. Randy's positive attitude and friendly personality makes him not only a wonderful piano teacher, but also a great mentor. "Ginni has been our 8 year old daughter's piano teacher for more than 4 years. She is consistently positive, engaging and creates a environment that has helped our daughter stay engaged in the learning process. Ginni is obviously well trained herself, and is attentive to ensuring that her students learn good fundamentals and are grounded in theory. Yet she manages to balance this attention with simultaneously supporting real enjoyment of the learning process and playing. She is truly a remarkable teacher whom our daughter absolutely loves."

Our oldest (12) will be auditioning for international competitions beginning this fall and our youngest (7) has been going through about 2 levels a year with perfect marks on the ABRSM. She’s fun, engaging, and has a great relationship with the students that make her family. We make sure to fly back stateside for at least one of her studio recitals per year and it’s well worth it. 88 Keys to Success: Taking Piano Lessons in Brooklyn, NY

By Concetta A. - Brooklyn Piano Teacher

Most musicians agree that an important musical instrument to learn is the piano. It’s not only a beautiful solo instrument, it also can be played to accompany or support singers and instrumentalists. Additionally, playing piano can be an essential bridge to becoming a songwriter or composer. The instrument clearly, and beautifully, lays out all 88 notes used in Western music in a way that is visually easy to grasp and understand. It's like a road map to understanding music theory.

Even if you're not planning on being a professional musician, having basic piano skills are easy to acquire and a joy to have. So, if you’re thinking about taking piano lessons in Brooklyn, then you’re in the perfect place to start learning this fantastic instrument! Check out some tips below on things to see and do in NYC to supplement your piano lessons in Brooklyn, NY!

Every few years, the city of New York invites an organization called Sing for Hope to set up 88 public pianos around the five boroughs for two weeks. It’s wonderful to hear young children playing songs, occasional pedestrians breaking out in karaoke with friends, folks riffing on a few chords they learned in music class years ago, or songwriters sharing their original work on a whim. Because piano is so easy, accessible and fun to play, why not invest a small corner of your life to discovering it? For more information, check out Sing for Hope’s website here: http://www.singforhope.org/

There are also many bars and restaurants in New York that leave pianos out for customers to enjoy and play. An example that comes to mind is Milk and Roses in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, which is known for its gypsy jazz jam sessions. The sessions are filled with Django Reinhardt style guitarists and Stephane Grappelli-esque violinists. http://milkandrosesbk.com/

Another is Lucey’s Lounge in South Slope, Brooklyn, a cocktail bar that hosts an open jazz jam session the last Sunday of every month. Additionally, The Living Room in Williamsburg features indie rock bands and singer-songwriters. In their former Lower East Side location, they hosted prolific pianists and songwriters like Norah Jones and Minnie Driver. The venue keeps a charming piano at the front of their stage for bands to use (http://www.livingroomny.com/). Finally, Rue Be in the Lower East Side hosts a fun Tuesday night jazz jam session with a piano tucked in the corner behind the bar.

The piano in these venues attracts other instrumentalists and musicians and invites a whole musical scene into the space. I often see people from the neighborhood arriving after work with their trumpet or guitar to jam with the pianist. It’s as if the person playing piano is the center of that scene, and it only takes some basic knowledge of rhythm and chords to insert yourself into that world.

Of all the life skills one might want to acquire - such as swimming, learning a foreign language or playing a sport - I would say piano should be right at the top of that list! Plus, there are so many opportunities open to you as a pianist in NYC, which can make learning the instrument all the more fun and rewarding. So, best of luck in your lessons, and have fun participating NYC’s wonderful piano scene!
