Every June, I hold an annual Piano Recital so parents, family, friends can see the students’ great work.
For young beginners, I use the Music for Little Mozart's books or Alfred Premier. For ages 6-7 through early teens, I typically use the Faber Piano Adventures lesson book, For adults, the Alfred Basic Adult Piano Course, or any lesson book of their choice.
Each student is given a Music Journal in which I document homework; what and how to practice. I have an extensive library. Students / parents are welcome to request a tutorial video.
After learning the fundamentals, my students are free to choose which songs they want to learn; multiple genres of music.

I'm a patient, friendly, enthusiastic, highly experienced teacher. A classically-trained pianist, I started playing keyboard "by ear" from around age 2, and started piano lessons at age 6. In college, I studied piano, music theory/history, and psychology in addition to fieldwork in music therapy (which prepared me to teach students with special needs). In grad school, I specialized in classical piano and theory/ composition.
Lessons with me are personalized. However. proper technique is taught to all students. Overall, I want the love of music to be the reason my students want to practice and attend lessons. I believe the rapport between student and teacher is tantamount. I strive for my students to develop a love of music that will last a lifetime.

I have been teaching piano for three years. I am happy to get students moving in the right direction on piano, and will teach up to an intermediate level of playing, from Beethoven to Adele.

I prefer is to use a method book, which introduces and reinforces music fundamentals. Simultaneously, I like to allow the student to select a piece of music that they will enjoy learning and playing. This helps the student apply the often challenging fundamentals to music that they enjoy.

My students have fun, and with practice, learn a lot!

I am a songwriter, composer, and performer living in New York City. I am a formally trained musician with considerable real world performing experience. Teaching music is something I enjoy immensely and something I am extremely passionate about.

During my time as a college student studying music, I began teaching guitar lessons. I found the work to be extremely rewarding. I was happy to be spreading a bit of love for music around, and I believe I made some lasting impressions. I continued to teach music lessons after I graduated, expanding to teach piano as well.

The more I taught, the more I found sincere joy in teaching. As I was was getting to know each of my students better, I realized that I was doing more than just teaching music lessons. I was acting as an example, a friend, and a counselor of sorts. I realized th
at each lesson was an opportunity to influence each of my students in a positive way, however small or large. To be granted that opportunity was truly thrilling.

I teach guitar from beginner to advanced levels of performance, in many styles. I teach piano and drums up to an intermediate level. I specialize in Jazz, Folk, Blues, Rock, Funk, and pretty much any contemporary style a student might be interested in learning. Although not my specialty, I am capable of teaching classical styles as well.

I am very excited to teach anyone interested in learning about the wonders of music, and I work with all ages.

In my lessons, students can expect to have fun while learning. I am friendly, warm, personable, caring, patient, and fun. I strive to find the perfect balance between learning the important fundamentals of music, and just plain enjoying music. Music takes hard work, but music is supposed to be fun!

I am a laid back person, and I do not expect any strict formalities when interacting with students. I feel that the more comfortable a student is, the more easily that student can learn and have fun doing so. However, I do expect my students to thoroughly practice, to focus, and to strive to improve.

I tailor each lesson to a student's particular needs. Everyone learns and interprets music in different ways, so I strive to serve each of my students uniquely. From basic fundamentals to advanced techniques, I cover everything. I also give each student an opportunity to choose some music that they will enjoy learning.

My curriculum changes depending on the student's ability level, age, and instrument of choice. I typically use a method book for reinforcement of musical fundamentals, and a supplementary "project" piece of music that the student enjoys playing and learning. I do this so that my students can see direct connections between music fundamentals and playing music that they enjoy. My own personal knowledge and experience as a musician is always added to each lesson as well.

*** Travel Equipment ***
For guitar lessons, I provide my guitar and any equipment that the student may not have initially, like for example, their own guitar, or music stand. Piano students will need their own keyboard for the very first lesson. Drum students should have their own drum set or practice pad for the first lesson. I can assist in finding affordable options for instruments. The student should eventually provide their own instrument and equipment, such as their own guitar, music stand, and copy of the selected method book; all of which are things that they will need in order to pursue practicing on their own time.

When teaching piano, because I specialize in classical, I emphasize sight-reading, theory and performance from the very first lesson. As soon as possible, I have student memorize pieces appropriate to their level. I begin each lesson with memory work, move into sight-reading and analysis of the new work, or exercise. This way a student has a multi-faceted approach to music they are learning, and once they have learned it, they are continually adding to their repertoire. I work this way because many students are overwhelmed at the beginning of the learning stage. Examining the theory behind the composition helps them understand it, and approach it with less apprehension. Also, having pieces they can play from memory every week reminds them of the finished product of their labor and encourages them towards the new work.

Jennifer is great with my high-energy seven-year-old. She's very patient and she is able to make him engage. She also takes the skills he's learned in his music class in school, and builds his skills lessons around his abilities. Finally, she gives homework in a notebook that is clear and measurable, so he knows exactly what to do on his own throughout the week.

Catherine is a performer, teacher, and arranger. She has performed in world class venues such as Weill Recital Hall in Carnegie Hall, Merkin Hall, Kosciuszko Foundation, as well as the Museum of Natural History, and she has performed with over thirty different chamber ensembles, including the American String Quartet and the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra. Her career developments are primarily in music, but she also pursues interest in creative writing, journal writing and human rights. She has given many community performances and raised charity funds for organizations such as World Vision, A. G. Rhodes Health & Rehab nursing home, Columbia Hospital, Corpus Christi Church, and InterVarsity Christian Fellowship.

Catherine initially gained her musical inspiration through her family and has been performing since her youth. Her family provided
her countless opportunities to perform, to participate in event planning, and to experiment with new music and arranging. She grew up participating in her mother's studio recitals at home and enjoys an annual family tradition of organizing and performing Christmas programs at church. One of Catherine's projects during her studies at the Manhattan School of Music was the Symposium Concert Series, which has led her to perform in apartment homes around the city and build a community of young artists. WHAT TO EXPECT
When meeting with a student for the first time we always discuss his or her needs or goals. After that, we get into the foundation of building technique, starting with posture. Next, the student is assigned breathing exercises to practice. These exercises are structured to energize the body and manage the breath. Every single student learns about appoggio. This is the term used for the process of suspending exhalation while keeping the torso in the position of inhalation by using the transverse abdominis and obliques. Students also learn that the action of the diaphragm is involuntary, therefore the exercises in which we engage are in place to have command over physical activity that we can control.

A TYPICAL VOICE LESSON
After posture and breathing are addressed the students begin to learn how to produce tone,
which encompasses the vocal onset and the closure of the vocal folds. Students realize that proper breath management and producing tone go hand in hand. The ideal that the student and I work towards is a balance between superfluous air flow and and pressed pressure. This concept leads to a clean onset in which the edges of the vocal folds cleanly come together and stay closed during singing.

Students also learn how to negotiate and coordinate the vocal registers. This means that every student who walks into my studio learns where and what the larynx is. It is my job to be a second set of ears to help the student optimize his or her tone quality by maximizing vocal resonance. This concept may be different across genres, however every student learns how to begin coordinating the vocal process.

HOW I TEACH
My aim as a teacher of voice is to be flexible and innovative, and provide students with a clear and honest assessment. I strive to explain to each singer exactly how to complete a task, whether maintaining the position of inhalation or correcting posture. In lessons, I refrain from being demonstrative so that the student can find his or her own unique sound without attempting to copy my sound. I use this method so that the student learns how to be her own teacher. This way, the student will be able to identify and correct her own vocal problems. When I am not present, the student will have confidence in her skills and can make educated corrections in practice, rehearsals, and in performances.

TECHNIQUE
Throughout the course of lessons, it is my job to identify the most effective resonating space for the student and give her the skills to maintain that space. It is through the combination of effective breath management using appoggio and flow-phonation that the student becomes most efficient. Finding the most efficient technique for the student involves discovering the proper laryngeal position for the student’s voice type and by practicing continuity through all of the registers.

As all of the aspects of technique are being built in the studio, it is my job to ensure that I am building a musician. This means that I go over how the student needs to learn a piece and how to perform a piece. Often times with young students, they do not have the musical skills to teach themselves the pieces assigned. Sometimes the voice teacher’s job is to “plunk out the notes.” I highly encourage my students to take piano lessons and to use technology resources to aid them in building musicianship so they feel confident reading music. This process takes time, but it is the first step in building a competent performer.

MY GOALS
I always cater to the students tastes while still meeting requirements, if any. I believe that this fosters joy and excitement in music. My goal as a voice teacher not only involves building a good singer, but creating a performer. I make sure that I not only find performing opportunities for my students, but also I create them. Every semester I hold a studio recital for my students to perform their repertoire in front of an audience. In the Fall of 2015 I founded a local opera company in order to bring classical music to the community. My students made up the chorus of Handel’s Messiah that we performed that December. In addition, I have invited my students to participate in the church choir I direct every week. I believe that learning how to sing must take place in the studio, but the most important thing that I can do as a teacher is to make sure that the student knows how to transfer the skills learned in the classroom to real-world performing experiences.

APPROACH
I believe in a holistic approach to teaching, which involves connection to the text and acting. Though I cover many of these aspects in the studio, it is extremely beneficial for students to go outside of the studio and engage in physical courses such as yoga, Alexander technique, acting and dance. I personally engage in these activities to relate to my students and to be able to explain how we need to engage the body in singing. I also encourage my students to have coachings with other professionals to gain more insight into their repertoire.

Not every student who comes to my studio wants to sing opera. Many students want to sing in choir, in church, or just for fun. Overall, I always come from a place of acceptance and non judgement. Every voice is unique and I strive to help my students not only reach their goals, but surpass them.

San Francisco Bay Area native, Dr. Melissa McCann has been teaching voice and piano since 2010. Not only an avid teacher, Dr. McCann has performed in music festivals all over the world including The American Institute of Musical Studies in Graz, Austria, Accademia Europa dell’Opera in Lucca, Italy, Angel Vocal Art in Los Angeles, CA, Russian Opera Workshop in Philadelphia, PA, and Highlands Opera Studio in Haliburton, Ontario. Melissa has also performed with companies including Opera San Jose, The Napa Valley Music Association, The San Francisco Youth Chamber Orchestra, Opera on the Spot, and The Solano Chamber Society.
Melissa earned her Doctorate of Musical Arts in Vocal Performance, Pedagogy, and Literature from James Madison University in Harrisonburg, VA with Kevin McMillan. During her time in Harrisonburg, Melissa founded Harrisonburg Opera Theatre and was the church choir director at Sunnyside Retirement Community Meredith Chapel.
Dr. McCann completed her Post-Graduate Artist Diploma in Voice at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music under the tutelage of acclaimed opera singer, Deborah Voigt. While in San Francisco, Melissa interned in the Education Department of San Francisco Opera and taught Kindergarten and First grade music with the San Francisco Conservatory in the Schools mentor-ship program. She also received a full scholarship to attend the Rubin Institute for Music Criticism.

Melissa earned her Masters of Fine Arts in Vocal Performance from the University of California, Irvine at the Claire Trevor School of the Arts where she sang the National Anthem for President Barack Obama at the school’s 50thAnniversary Celebration. At UC Irvine, Dr. McCann received critical acclaim for her portrayal of Euridice in Gluck's Orfeo ed Euridice, and as the Soprano in Pergolesi's Stabat Mater.

Love Dr. M! I've wanted to take voice lessons forever but I have been hesitant due to my lack of experience. Dr. M not only made me feel comfortable but also confident in the voice that I have. She's personal and warm but also very professional. She never gets frustrated with obstacles I face in my lessons; instead she helps ways to overcome them.

I've never left a lesson feeling disappointed with my ability, something I experienced with other voice teachers. I feel confident in my voice and I owe that all to Melissa. For instance, during one lessons I was feeling a little off. Rather than getting frustrated she helped me focus on great ways to approach singing when not feeling your best. Dr. McCann rocks!

If you are looking for a voice teacher new or experienced I would definitely recommend Dr. McCann. Top notch lessons and overall awesome woman!

Dr. M. is a phenomenal teacher who does a great job customizing her lessons to the needs of the student. She has helped me make amazing progress with my voice, and just as importantly has helped me gain the confidence to be able to sign.

Her lessons are fun, effective, and very positive. All of which help the student learn more and get more out of the lesson. I highly recommend Dr. M. as a teacher to anyone (at any level) who is interested in becoming a better singer.

About Dor
Dor is an Israeli-born vocalist based in Brooklyn, New York. She began her music education at the age of five when she studied classical piano. During those years she had experimented with saxophone and guitar but soon realized that her voice is her most powerful instrument.

In 2009, she started taking classical voice lessons and joined the “Moran Singers Ensemble” (Israel). With them, she performed many high profile national and international events, and eventually managed the ensemble during her last year there. In 2014 Dor joined the prestigious “Gary Bertini Israeli Choir”, directed by Ronen Borshevsky, where she participated in several co-productions with the Israeli Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by legendary Zubin Metta.

In 2015 Dor moved to New York to continue her academic studies at The New school for Jazz and Contempor
ary Music, after receiving a sizeable scholarship from the school itself.

In 2016 she formed a vocal jazz quartet, a collaboration with Israeli composer Rami Bar-David.

Dor is also the leader of 'SAGE', a progressive-rock band, playing her original music.

Dor is extremely detail oriented - she will make sure that you learn about every little nuanced bit of your voice. For me personally, not only has she helped me improve my singing, but also she has helped me SPEAK better. Yes that's right - her vocal techniques has actually helped me a ton when I was interviewing for new jobs to sound more confident and composed. It's very rare that a teacher can help you learn something that is applicable beyond its original context, but Dor has done exactly that. Highly recommended!

Teaching piano for over 15 years, all ages and levels welcome. I hold 2 degrees in classical piano performance, giving me the expertise to bring each piece we study up to a high performance level. Our lessons will focus on your unique needs, from the physical (breathing, posture, use of full body...) to the mental (music theory, understanding a composition, sight reading, focus, memory...) emotional (interpretation, confidence...), and more, all leading to a relaxed, natural and inspired technique. My studio is conveniently located in Bushwick near the Dekalb L stop, and Myrtle Wykoff M train, as well as the B38 bus line and many others. I have a beautiful Steinway Grand piano to enjoy ours lessons on and am also ready and willing to travel to you.

I am a professionally driven pianist. Music is my passion and number one priority. I regularly perform with other musicians. Classical music is my specialty and I’ve been through the various paths in this often competitive niche: from auditioning for music schools, regular public performances, accompanying various vocalists and instrumentalists, to preparing for and competing in piano competitions.

My experience within the conservatory atmosphere has given me insight into bringing out one’s own unique ability and approach to music that has been played time and time again by many capable hands. I hold two degrees in Piano Performance (B.A./M.M.). This, combined with many years of teaching and the public recital circuit have given me the perspective and know-how to hone and develop your individual skills at the keyboard.

develop a plan to move you forward in your artistic desires and dreams, all while working on pieces close to your heart and introducing new works that will take you to next level.
