I bring to teaching piano an unrivalled Juilliard education, international performing and recording career, and 18 years of experience teaching students of various levels. In teaching, I see myself as my students' partner dedicated to helping them realize their full potential as budding musicians and performers. I am encouraging, enthusiastic, patient, and flexible in teaching adults and children of all levels. I love finding the right individual approach with each of my students, so that they stay motivated and inspired while growing in their musical understanding and mastery.
I strongly believe that a chief tool enabling progress in all aspects of musicianship is focused listening, and see my role as a teacher to guide students in developing power and sensitivity of aural perception through concrete steps and activities. I'm deliberate in selecting and assigning a repertoire that challenges students with appropriate techniques and allows them to develop as pianists and ...
Why settle for piano lessons with a guitarist who also teaches drums and viola? This being NYC, start or continue your piano lessons with an actively performing and recording classical pianist with Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral degrees from the Juilliard School and prizes in top international competitions. As a teacher, I am encouraging, enthusiastic, patient, and flexible in teaching adults and children of all levels. I love finding the right individual approach with each of my students, so that I can effectively help them reach their full potential, whether in their first steps in understanding and making music, or in preparation for performances/auditions. My teaching experience includes university-level faculty positions at Brooklyn College, CUNY (from 2019) and in my native Lithuania (2011-2016), a teaching fellowship at Juil
liard (2002-2004), private lessons since 2000, and extensive master classes in US and abroad.
My international performing career has led me to appear as soloist with the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra (Austria), the Juilliard Orchestra, the New Amsterdam and Adelphi Symphony Orchestras (both in New York), Bilkent Symphony Orchestra (Ankara, Turkey), Wartburg Community Symphony (Iowa), and the Belarus State Symphony Orchestra in Minsk, while in my native Lithuania I appear regularly with all the major orchestras. I have garnered more than a dozen top prizes in competitions on both sides of the Atlantic, such as Beethoven (Vienna, Austria), Hilton Head (United States), and Maria Canals (Spain) International Piano Competitions.
Among the venues where I have enjoyed performing solo are New York’s Weill Recital Hall of Carnegie Hall, Washington, D.C.’s National Gallery, the United Nations headquarters in Geneva, Vienna’s Musikverein, New York’s Symphony Space and Adelphi University, Helsinki’s (Finland) Temppeliaukion kirkko, large halls of National Philharmonic Societies of Belarus and Lithuania, and others. I do love to perform chamber music as well, and have played with numerous outstanding instrumentalists and singers.
I have been greatly interested in the piano music by 20th-Century Lithuanian avant-garde composers Vytautas Bacevičius and Jeronimas Kačinskas, and have shared this interest through several critically acclaimed recordings. The British label ‘Toccata Classics’ has issued two volumes in an ongoing series of Bacevičius' piano music (2012 and 2016). In this project, I had a fortune to collaborate with the five-time Grammy-winning producer Judith Sherman and the five-time Grammy-nominated pianist Ursula Oppens. My recording of Vytautas Bacevičius’ piano concertos Nos. 3 and 4, with the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra and the three-time Grammy-nominated conductor Christopher Lyndon-Gee was released by the largest classical music label 'Naxos' in 2015. Jeronimas Kačinskas' piano works appeared in 2013 on another release by 'Toccata Classics'.
I am looking forward to welcoming you in my studio!
Gabrielius has been teaching piano to my two daughters (5 and 7 years old) for the past 2 years and is an absolutely fantastic teacher! He is wonderful with children and has an amazing ability to figure out how to intrigue them with their lessons. My girls have learned a tremendous amount from him and really love their lessons with him!! He is truly a gifted teacher!

Dr. Gabrielius Alekna is a 5 Star piano teacher. He’s very inspiring. He’s an accomplished concert pianist, recording artist, and holds a Doctor of Music from the Julliard School of Music. Despite all of his accomplishments, he teaches with humility and kindness.
He establishes a high quality standard so you could achieve your best. Either by playing a passage or the whole music piece (to your heart’s delight), he demonstrates the complexity and beauty of the music you are working to learn.
He’s very professional. He genuinely regards every person without condescension and wants you to work toward being your best. I’ve taken lessons with him since 2009 and I’ve played pieces that I will never have been able to play without his patience with me. He is generous with his time, helping me to select a new piano on his day off and always finishing a lesson at its natural conclusion (not because the clock says so.)
Above all he’s a real person that you and I could relate with. And, because of that, I not only regard him as my instructor and mentor, but truly a friend.

I have been studying piano with professor Gabrielius Alekna in Vytautas Magnus University's Music Academy (Lithuania) for three years. Now we continue our lessons online and I am more than pleased to work with him - he is an amazing pianist, caring teacher and one of the most wonderful people that I've ever met. Over this time Gabrielius taught me to hear and understand (classical) music in new and very subtle ways, encouraged me to take challenging music pieces and successfully helped understand, learn and perform them. With Gabrielius' lessons and help I've won national and international piano solo and accompanists competitions, discovered new ways of interpretating music in piano duet and chamber music ensemble. Gabrielius' teaching distinguishes itself by calm and professional approach, which makes the learning process seem rather easy and pleasant than challenging or requiring much effort. The methods used by Gabrielius help achieve excellent quality in one's playing and create the feeling of freedom, which makes the music flow...
I work with beginners, Michael Aaron method and/or John Thompson.
Stephen made his operatic debut in the title role of Gluck's Orfeo in Santa Barbara, CA. Other roles performed in the United States have been Oberon in Britten's A Midsummer Night's Dream, the title role in John Eccles' The Judgement of Paris and Sesto in La Clemenza di Tito by Mozart. Among the roles sung in Europe were Orlolsky in Fledermaus, Bertarido in Rodelinda and Oberon in Sommernachtstraum. He has been a soloist in many Churches and Synagogues in the United States and Europe. Highlights have been Messiah, Elijah, St. Mathew Passion and Cantorial soloist for the Jewish High Holidays. He appeared in Summer Stock and played the guitar in a number of bands. Reviewers have cited Stephen's naturally full and warm timbre and his unforced agility.

My 10 year old son has no musical knowledge what-so-ever. We wanted him to have some basics, and he was curious about the guitar. Sadly our family isn't musical and it's hard to know where to start. We were lucky to have engaged Stephen. His calm, patient, encouraging approach has been the perfect complement to my son's temperament.
When I overhear snippets of exchanges during their lesson I am excited that my son is making connections and having a conversation about what he's learning. I can't support his instruction because of my complete inability to read sheet music—so I am particularly pleased that he seems to be making observations and taking small steps towards understanding something that confounds me.
My son looks forward to his time with teacher and (so far) is interested in practicing too. Of course we'd recommend Stephen!

Stephen is great!!!
January 6, 2018
My first session with Stephen was both technically and emotionally rewarding. He was both able to pass-on his musical expertise (his tips) and patiently encouraging my understanding of vocal technique.
My goal as a teacher is to make students successful in their goals. I work with a variety of people; some of them study music for personal enjoyment and others for their musical career. Everyone responds differently to music, that is why I prepare special lessons for each student. It is important that my students enjoy what they are playing and for that reason I have a variety of repertoire that they can choose from. From a lot of experience with beginner piano students, both young and adults, I have been able to find a regimen of piano teaching that combines time efficiency with fun. As the lessons continue, I slowly add new tools to each weekly lesson that are exiting and interesting. While working with intermediate to advanced students, I have had coached them to apply and get accepted into some of the top Universities and Conservatories in the country. My students, beginner intermediate and advanced levels, have been awarded for their performances and activities in schools and ...

The piano is often referred to as the instrument every musician should start off learning. The way it is laid out makes it very easy to see how music works and fits together. In lessons, we'll be sure to cover all the basics of technique, rhythm, harmony and melody and even theory to ensure a solid foundation to build upon. I tend to teach these concepts through the use of various etude/method books as well as listening exercises to ensure a well rounded approach to learning in order to become a more well rounded musician.

Ramona is great. She is so calm and patient with me. She teaches in a way that makes it's fun and enjoyable rather than technical in the beginning. She gives you homework so you can practice at home. The homework is not burdensome because you will leave the lesson excited to go home and practice what you learned.

Wonderful teacher. Made everything simple and clear.

Ramona was great! Very enthusiastic, knowledgeable, and creative!
As I said in my profile, I play all styles and so I teach all styles. This is an important point as many teachers only teach classical and if you want to learn a song by Sam Smith, the Beatles or perhaps something from "Frozen", they'll say 'buy the sheet music'. I teach music theory (after the fundamentals of music are learned) and if the student desires, he or she can learn how to improvise. This does not mean jazz necessarily, but learning to elaborate on a dull sheet music arrangement.
Greetings, future students. I've been teaching piano for 30 years. I'm a professional pianist working mostly in Manhattan's major hotels. I play all styles of music and so I can teach all styles. Classical (I was accepted to the Juilliard Preparatory School at age 12), pop, jazz, blues, Broadway etc. I believe that learning to play the piano should be an enjoyable experience. Just as Sesame Street came up with the concept that learning can be fun, I do the same. Children as well as adults truly like me. This is extremely important. Thank you for reading my profile.
my first lesson with David was great. He makes you feel very comfortable & knows how to highlight the students talents and teach from there. He is also extremely talented. I am looking forward to the rest of my lessons.

Coming back from my third lesson with David, and looking forward for many many more to come. I have been by many teachers before and never had such a good experience. At our first lesson David already knew my strength and weaknesses and together we are working for me to become the "consommé" musician.

Hello and welcome!
My name is Matt and my goal is to create an enjoyable, safe environment for you to learn as effectively as possible. Music is hard work but it is the most fun when you are improving and doing what you want! Having been through years of many types of music lessons, a master's program and worked in music publishing, I know that what is most important it is to have a mentor who is thoughtful and open to honest conversations about goals, needs, and interests--- someone who invests and goes the extra mile to help you succeed--- someone who inspires and challenges you. This focused, collaborative approach to education is rare but of utmost importance to my style.
I'm first and foremost a composer with interest in using these skills to encourage you to discover and achieve your goals in composition, theory, or beginn
ing piano: additionally I'm in the very beginning stages of developing these ideas into a mobile/web application to further encourage consistent learning habits outside of lessons.
Matt is very supportive, encouraging and patient teacher. He makes sure he adjusts his teachings to students ability, need and interest. Looking forward to the next classes!

Awesome teacher. Very knowledgeable and fun

Matthew is an excellent teacher with a ton of patience, as well. Coming into our first lesson, I had some beginner experience, but it had been a while since I actively played the piano. His lessons focus on assuring that the fundamentals are understood, then progressively building into more difficult pieces and even some theory. I would definitely recommend, as I am still taking lessons weekly!

Time to get to work, Christmas is not that far away and I will be learning a couple of songs for the holiday season."
"Ben goes patiently and slowly with my 3 granddaughters, ages 7 and 8."
