I have been teaching piano for about 20 years. My specialization is classical music, both European and Russian. Usually I pay a lot of attention to the correct positioning of hands, piano technique, theory and development of the student's musical ear. I work with students from beginner to high intermediate level, starting around age 8. I would be glad to convey to you my love for great ageless music and accompany it with hard workouts to develop finger dexterity. Perhaps your hands will sometimes hurt, but I promise you that you will have fun and be proud of yourself playing Mozart, Tchaikovsky or Chopin. My native language is Russian; I teach in Russian and English.
For many years I have lived and worked in Moscow. In addition to teaching piano, I played electric piano in a cover band and accompanied the singers. I helped some well-known Russian musical groups to make musical arrangements for the piano, and these collections were published. I have also creat

He is helpful and encouraging and makes learning to play fun.
The music that he selects is challenging without being overwhelming and he is fine with moving on to something else if you just plain don't like a piece.
He is a very popular instructor and I feel fortunate that I have found a space in his schedule !

Broadway Singing is my passion! I've played piano on Broadway for 4 shows (Wicked, Mean Girls, Motown, and The Color Purple). And yet, teaching singing is just as rewarding.
I focus on technique (low breaths, engaging support muscles, steady stream of air on the exhale...), pitch (the first step is to hear it!), and musicality - how to express not only the dynamic contours of the music, but also how to tell the story compellingly.
I also love working on Acting While Singing. So often, performers will act wonderfully until their songs, then drop out of character once they start singing. Many directors have said "I'd rather have an actor who can't sing than a singer who can't act". To improve this, we'll look at how to use a lyric specifically and personally in order to stay in the moment.
I would love to help you discover yourself inside the songs you sing. Whether your goal is Broadway, community theater, or simply to have fun (all equally noble aspirations), I welcome the ...

Compose Music with Ferlyn!
My History of Composition:
Many of my compositions, sound productions and songwriting techniques are used in a several performances and a few video amateur productions. I have been mostly self-taught and trained through private music lessons. Arrangements and accompaniment techniques for guitar, piano, orchestral and symphonies are readily available for learning.
My Teaching Method:
I assess each students' levels, knowledge and styles of learning, determine the best learning paths to incorporate into the lesson and bring a "natural movement" approach of training and education.
With my method, this is to provide a collaborative & supportive environment as well as actively develop a person's life, culture and well-being. I strive to take a step further and deeper within the mind of the person who is learning dance and find one's "True Inner Dancer."

I arranged piano lessons with Ferlyn for my mother.
Her first lesson (for which I was present) was fine.
I then found out that at their second lesson, Ferlyn showed up very sick. This was quite concerning, especially given my mother’s age. Ferlyn definitely should have canceled that second lesson and not showed up so sick.
Then, only two hours (!) before my mother’s scheduled third lesson, I receive a text message from Ferlyn stating the following:
“Hi Dominique, wanted to let you and your mom that piano lessons will be cancelled today because it is my Birthday! I will see her next week. :)”
This was incredible. This was a cancellation only two hours prior, not due to some emergency or even due to her illness which should have caused a cancelation the week before! This was because it was her birthday. Something that would have been understandable, were she to have let us know well in advance. I am sure she knew in advance when her birthday is.
This does not reflect on TakeLessons, as I have had great experiences with other teachers.
But this degree of inconsiderateness, first with regard to the illness and then with regard to the manner of cancellation, is appalling.
