It is my grasp of foreign languages that makes me an effective English teacher. For instance, learning the complex grammar of Latin and Greek gave me a thorough understanding of English grammar and the ability to relate to other people’s native languages. I have spent many hours proofreading papers for international students. They find my instruction especially informative because I not only fix mistakes but provide an explanation. When I point out the patterns of grammar, similar mistakes show up less and less, and my students feel more confident that they are writing sentences correctly.
I learned English teaching methods through my tutoring experience. Over a span of four months, I gave a Turkish visiting scholar a systematic overview of English grammar and allowed him to apply it through conversation.
Welcome to my studio, where I will instruct you in your musical and academic endeavors. What sets me apart is that I offer diverse instruction in two different areas. In my music studio, I give lessons in piano, violin, guitar, and composition. In my tutoring center, I specialize in Latin (learning from scratch and tutoring). I instruct students of all ages at different skill levels.

I performed different self-composed pieces at seven OSU Composers' Workshops and won the Audience Favorite Award at the Johnstone Woodwinds Composition Competition in 2012. My Senior Composition Recital was performed on October 25, 2012. It showcased several of my three-movement works: string quartet, clarinet solo, set of classical songs for piano and voice, set of pop songs for piano and voice. Interspersed with these were two solo piano pieces and a duet for piano and violin.
My background makes me a knowledgeable and effective tutor. I was valedictorian at Delaware Hayes High School in 2009 and received OSU's Maximus Scholarship based on my ACT and SAT scores.

I will break down your problem areas and make sure you have a strong grasp on what needs improvement. I learn languages for fun, English being the second language I learned and became fluent in, so I can help non-natives more than most because I can relate to their mistakes and may even have learned their language. My Design work has been very general so I've done a lot of different things before I specialized in hand lettering, so I've done it all from advertisements on billboards to website design and development, to copywriting, to branding from start to finish for companies big and small.
My love for lettering and Calligraphy emerged when I started getting more Logos for client work and my exploration of type wasn't the best answer most of the time so I would letter everything myself, and the rest is history.
I am really passionate about learning and even more passionate about sharing what I've learned. I am efficient, I know what works for different people since I taught in classrooms and tutored way before I knew about Takelessons, and I'm most proud of being praised as a very genuine person. A very common compliment I get is that I sincerely want my students to do well. And it makes me really happy every time someone says it, and I hope that one day you see that and tell me the same thing.

Just so there are no surprises, I raise my prices very slightly every 3 months, next time it will go up is on March 3rd 2017. I specialize with English for Japanese learners, but I will take teach everyone who wants to get better. I just say that because I know Japanese, so I have a unique perspective for Japanese learners. We can cover any questions you have, but I think one of the most effective things I can do is to facilitate lots of conversation.
Most people just need more conversation to get better, and so I want to help foster an environment where students can speak A LOT, get out of their shell, make mistakes, and make their speaking more fluent.
We can come up with topics or media to help assist is in knowing what to talk about, or have things to talk about. I'm always open to questions, but I think that the most relevant questions will come from their experiences trying things out and wondering how "this" or "that" is said. I couldn't sight read very well until I was 16, but I had a great sight reading teacher that showed me how to develop it, and now I can say that I'm one of the best sight readers out there that I know. I was a ballet pianist at Brigham Young University for several years where all I did was sightread binders full of ballet/classical music. I play for choirs, church congregations, jazz bands, or musical jam sessions all the time, and I couldn't do that at all if I didn't learn how to sight read well.
Concerning my musical background, I've played, arranged, and composed piano for choirs, bands, jazz combos, singers. I've been in bands all my life, and have composed for jazz bands, choirs, and orchestras at BYU and in Eastern Europe. I also play about 10 different instruments. I won two Student Emmys in Hollywood for my compositions to BYU's animations in 2010 & 2014.

I graduated with a degree from UCLA with high honors (Dean's Honors List, Magna Cum Laude) in Integrative Biology & Physiology. I also took many classes at UCLA in education, linguistics, history, and English. I had a cumulative GPA of 3.838 with 265.5 completed units at graduation and was a 10-time Dean's Honors List Recipient. I also was a member of the UCLA Regents Scholar Society, the Alpha Lambda Delta/Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Societies, the Alpha Epsilon Delta Pre-Health Honor Society, and Christian Students at UCLA. I worked as a TA for several undergraduate classes at UCLA, including Education 92F and Life Sciences 2-3. One of the wisest teachers once said that poor grades, study habits, and test scores are not life-threatening, but they are college-, job- , career-, and quality-of-life threatening. The most competitive students take a pro-active approaching to academics and tutoring while the least competitive take a reactive approach. All you need to do is watching the documentary 'Two Million Minutes' by Bob Compton to realize why students in other countries such as India and China surpass American peers in almost every subject, especially language (writing, grammar, etc.), math, science, and engineering-related subjects. They attend extra classes and tutoring from 6-7 AM in the morning to almost midnight.
In today's fast-paced and competitive job market, there is simply too much to lose by not investing now in your child's or your education. If a student is struggling, it makes sense to get him/her the help needed so that the time spent in school is worthwhile. Great grades and test scores can open doors that may have been previously closed and are also significant factors when determining scholarships, so investing time and effort now can pay off substantially in the future. Finally, let's not forget the most important part in all of this: the student. The confidence, knowledge, and skills that a student gains through effective tutoring can last a lifetime.
Please do not hesitate to get in touch.
