As an English minor is college and a freelance writer for multiple publications, I find that having a firm grasp of the English language has expanded my opportunities and provided me with a sensational outlook on life. From poetry to prose, English is important to me.

About Jerred
I'm a young, enthusiastic, energetic, and patient pianist with a B.A. in Jazz Piano Performance from Lewis and Clark College.

So, born in Dallas, I've spent parts of my childhood in various parts of the country, from Washington D.C. to Carbondale, Colorado to Portland, Oregon, and now in hot and humid Houston, Texas. America has a plenty to offer and our great country's musical history is rich and eclectic. I first started playing piano at a very young age from a very old lady. It was something I resented my parents for, not really understanding the whole point of playing music. But now, in retrospect, I thank them indefinitely for exposing me to one of the most important passions of my life. It was in 6th grade that I joined a rock n' roll band, singing and playing all sorts of keyboards and having a ball with music. The idea that I w
as having fun playing music finally dawned on me and the verb "playing" music finally made perfect sense to me. Without passion, music is simply another endeavor, so this realization propelled me into the realm of music indefinitely.

In high-school I finally learned what jazz music was and fell in love with the idea of spontaneous improvisation. Learning theory really helped and I started jamming with my buddies, eventually starting a cover band. Although I've never lost sight of my classical roots, trying to improve my technique as well as my sight-reading, it was in jazz that I really found my calling. So in college, I started studying with a great jazz pianist, Randy Porter, and found my fingers wrapping themselves around my own music in a way I never thought possible. So that's that, I've recently graduated, having played gigs and teaching kids, and found my way into a new city with new possibilities.

When it comes to teaching, most teachers adhere to a strict curriculum. While I do love my curriculum, I will often change things around in order to cater to my students' different needs. Through all my experiences, I've learned that positive reinforcement is ideal and that a good association with a learning experience often paves the way for more of them. Working with me gives students the opportunity to make headway in an instrument without painstaking monotony. The more that somebody enjoys learning, the more that they learn. I love to have fun when I'm teaching, so my students tend to have fun as well. Like I said earlier, music should be "played," and playing should be fun!

*** Lesson Details ***
My lessons will usually begin with a recap of the last week, what the student has practiced, and what they accomplished since the last lesson. For some students, I will assign listening over the week, so at the beginning of the lessons, I read over the observations that they made in regards to the songs they listened to.
One thing I require of all of my students is a notebook devoted solely to the lesson, where the student writes down what he/she thinks about in terms of accomplishments and what they want to learn. I will also write down in the notebook different techniques, assignments, and various other things related to the lesson for the betterment of the student. My typical lesson will involve a communication between the student and myself, trying best to learn where the student is coming from and cater to his/her necessities in terms of learning. I am laid back, for the most part, but will encourage the student to practice. I do not get angry, but I will try to inspire the student through various techniques, becoming more disappointed than enraged at a student's lack of enthusiasm. Lessons for me are fun and I try and convey that jovial enthusiasm to my students.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Lessons in living room with upright piano, couch. I do have cats, so heads up if you're allergic.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I may or may not bring music paper and lesson books. If it is the first lesson, I'll definitely bring some material. I expect a piano in the home of the student given the enormous stature of the instrument.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in jazz piano, first and foremost. Although I was coached in classical as a child and can easily teach most intermediates, jazz is my forte and my major in college. In terms of teaching styles, it all depends on the student. More than most teachers, though, I put a heavy weight on listening to music in order to fully understand it. Technique is very important and must be taught, but feel is probably paramount and should be emphasized. Before a student can accurately play a piece of music, he/she must be able to connect with the music. When it comes to the piano, especially jazz piano, theory and knowledge of how the sounds of the instrument interact are also crucial. I will teach an appropriate amount of theory to the students given the style of play and pieces they are learning.

I can teach essay composition, creative writing, and poetry. I have been writing and editing poetry, fiction, creative non-fiction, and song lyrics seriously for over 10 years.

About Andrew
I've been studying music for 10 years now. Having come to music later in life than most, I find that I am more empathetic to the perspective of the beginning student than many teachers. I spent the Summer of 2009 teaching music fundamentals to groups of severely physically and mentally disabled children of all ages. Since then I've completed my Bachelors degree in Music, taught privately and with several established music schools.

To me, music is above all about transformation. Beautiful sound transforms our experience of the environment, and learning an instrument can help students approach life as one big instrument they need to practice to master.
Learning to play an instrument is also an experience of training one’s nervous system to gradually act and respond in new ways, and that kind of persistent, focused
, training is applicable to any new skill.
Last and definitely not least, playing music is fun.

*** Lesson Details ***

I plan my lessons around getting students to enjoy playing music as soon as possible, whether that means learning how to strum a chord rhythmically, playing their favorite song, or how to take a blues solo.
There are steps that have to be climbed to do more complex things and I encourage students to practice a little every day rather than for a long time once or twice a week. Developing a love of music and steady practice habits are more beneficial over the long term than practicing until your limit.

*** Studio Equipment ***
I currently have a living room space where I can teach, but it's small so it might be preferable to travel to you.

*** Travel Equipment ***
If necessary I can provide amplification, cables, and a microphone.

*** Specialties ***
Jazz, Folk, Blues, Rock, Hip-hop, Funk, Reggae.

Kaplan University certified test prep teacher/tutor: ACT, GMAT, GRE, SAT

About Angela
Having tutored middle and high school students, I've learned that the best tutoring session is 2 hours. This gives the student time to discuss school challenges, how to solve school related problems, to discuss various subjects, etc. Young students are often not prepared for my visit even when they know in advance that I am coming, so every additional minute can be useful. However, I am totally flexible on this so you are invited to tell me what you believe would be a good session length for you.

My ultimate goal, for working with you, is to hear you say, "I am so glad we found you!" When you feel that you have reached a satisfactory level of learning/development through our working together, you are invited to terminate our tutor/tutee relationship. Let's remain friends, though. Please watch my video. I am the real deal; you
can see the real me.

For a writing lesson, for example, I first talk to the student and review a writing sample or assignment to assess what skills need to be targeted. Then I address each skill in its logical order. For example, the student first needs to understand the purpose of the assignment and its specific requirements. The next stage might require how to approach and analyze a text and then how to organize, revise, and edit the writing. Throughout this process, I check for the student's understanding.

About Marcelle
In addition to having an MA in English and a JD in law, I have had over 30 years of English teaching experience, mostly at the college level. I've taught a variety of courses and tutored students in a variety of skills, including ESL; composition and grammar; analytical writing and critical thinking; American, British, and world literature; business writing and communications; introductory courses to the American legal system, and legal writing. At present, I'm teaching ESL to international professionals and other adults to help them improve their speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills. I also help ESL students prepare for the TOEFL and IELTS exams. Throughout my career, I've helped both native and non-native speakers of English improve their language and critical thinking skills. In tutoring, I take a very customized approac
h and use a variety of tested methods and effective materials to address each student's needs.

Students often develop anxiety or a lack of confidence that causes them to struggle with English. These issues are very real and can affect student's enthusiasm and dedication to other subjects as well. I am very aware of these issues and my lessons not only teach skills and methods to become better in the subject, but also address and try to work on some of the difficulties students have had in the past. I am eager to show students how they can change their relationship with English and turn it into a tool they can use to improve their lives.

About Courtney
Courtney Elizabeth King has been teaching since 2012 and is available for private lessons in person or online. Courtney possesses a passion for the English language, and she uses this passion to help students improve their writing, speaking, and reading skills. She has studied to teach native speakers and non-native speakers of English and can tailor her lessons to match any student goal.

Courtney attended Truman State University where she graduated with a B.A. in English in 2011. After that, she moved across the country to Washington State University where she received her M.A. in English Literature and began teaching international students. After that, she moved back to the midwest where she worked on her M.A. TESOL at Central Michigan University while teaching English to speakers of other languages full-time. She completed her M.A.
TESOL in 2016.

Zoia Eliseyeva is a very skillful and experienced language teacher. I attended her Spanish classes where she taught students of different age. Her classes were interactive, full of practical experience, and easy to understand. The fact that Zoia speaks more than three languages, helps her students understand the comparison of grammar in English and Spanish. Ms. Eliseyeva is very professional and makes sure she has an individual approach to every student. Moreover, I observed her ESL classes where she taught various levels. Within one class, I noticed that the students were able to understand grammar rules. They have a lot of respect to Zoia. Ms. Eliseyeva can interest everyone to learn a foreign language. I also took some Spanish classes with Zoia on Skype and I liked them. Without any doubt, I recommend her as a tutor.
