I was a National Merit Semifinalist in High School for good SAT scores, and in the Honors Society in High School and College. I play piano, percussion, flute, cello, guitar, bass, cornet and glockenspiel, and teach music lessons. I enjoy playing duets with my students, sharing the fun of making music with them. Hello! After earning my Bachelor of Music degree in Classical Voice from Hunter College in 2011, I have been working successfully as a singer, voice coach, and academic tutor. As a singer, over the past 8 years I have performed at professional theaters across the country, including Off-Broadway and at the world-renown Carnegie Hall. We practiced the new cadence for example of the deceptive cadence, the plagal cadence, and the phrygian. we learnt the basic root progression. a standard method of connecting triads with roots a fifth apart is to hold the common tone in the same voice and move all the other parts to the closest possible chord number. We learn about mediant triads s well.some ways using cadence that I can expand my harmonization practice is in general, when tempted to part write or analyze a chord in common-practice music as iii (in major), give the context further thought. i imagine with this knowledge it ill help me to compose a better harmonize song.
We practice together the scale degrees that are designated by Arabic numerals (1, 2, 3...), chor ds are similarly designated by Roman numerals (I, II, III). For example, in the key of C major the notes are C,D,E,F,G,A,B and we have designated them as 1,2,3,4,5,6,7. However, when we consider the triad chords in the key of C we have Cmaj, Dm, Em, Fmaj, Gmaj, Am, Bdim. These are designated I,II,III,IV,V,VI,VII. When speaking about these chords, for instance in the key of C major, we would call Gmaj the five chord, Dm the two chord,

The easiest way to find an interval's name is to first, count all the pitch names present, including the notes themselves (ignore sharps and flats at this point). Then, find out (had it been missing a flat or sharp) what type of interval it would be, depending on whether it is perfect (a 1,4,5,8) or major (2,6,7). If there are no sharps or flats, you are done. If there are, figure out if the flat or sharp decreases or increases the distance between the two pitches. If it increases the distance, the interval is augmented. If it decreases the distance, and the interval would otherwise be perfect, it is diminished. If it decreases the distance and the interval would otherwise be major, it is min that is what I learnt

Mariana was great! Very professional and able to explain the techniques in a very clear way. When I began, I was very nervous and self-conscious. She was patient and kind and never made me feel embarrassed!

She really knows her stuff and technique. I'd been to a few voice teachers before and they were great singers, but they didn't seem to have to really KNOW the techniques behind singing. Mariana clearly is a wonderful singer and has great training in what she does.

While attending the University of Southern California, where I received my M.F.A., I worked as a writing tutor in the USC Writing Center and also taught Classical Greek Mythology. After graduation, I taught Verbal, Writing and Literature SAT classes and worked as a private tutor in a variety of subjects.

I later taught for five years at the New York Film Academy in Universal City, CA, where I taught a variety of Critical Studies classes to various levels of students, some in certificate programs and others working towards their M.F.A.

Paul was my favorite teacher at the New York Film Academy.
Unlike most of the teachers, Mr. Paul put a lot of effort and creativity into planning his classes, which made them both stimulating and fun for us.
I also loved the fact that Mr. Paul always respected our opinions, and never made us feel stupid when we didn’t understand something. He was always very encouraging and willing to keep explaining until we got it.

I highly recommend him to anyone interested in extra lessons. He is definitely worth it!

How does your service stand out?
​My studio requires students to practice a minimum of 30 minutes every day with wee
kly progress reports, weekly listening to music for their instrument with evaluations, semester auditions, and recitals. I require students to video record each practice session so I can verify practice time as well as provide suggestions to maximize efficiency. I encourage involvement with outside music ensembles and we take field trips to watch professional musicians. Any student with enthusiasm is welcome in my studio!!

What do you enjoy about the work you do?
I love getting to know all different students and seeing them grow. I look long term for satisfaction with my job, it barely feels like work. I get to make music daily with really cool kids, what could be better than that?!

What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I start wherever the student is. We work on fundamentals regardless of ability, and I assess what level the student plays to make a decision on what materials we use.

How did you get started teaching?
I started teaching when I was in high school to help my band director out. I always wanted to be the type of teacher that was similar to my mentors; compassionate, hard working, enthusiastic, and patient. I began teaching professionally when I was in music college and continued to enjoy working with all types of students.

What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with students as young as 6 and as old as 70. I work with special needs in any form. I work with students that practice really hard to attain a specific goal and others who are only trying to get better for band music.

What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Find someone who can thoroughly answer your questions and will also be flexible to meet your needs. Make sure the teacher still takes enrichment classes to keep current with research, their instrument, and to help develop better and newer ways of teaching.

I offer in-person and online lessons ranging from 45-90 minutes.

Ms. Laverty has been my son’s private trumpet teacher since the summer of 2012. She is patient, kind and very supportive of his efforts in playing the trumpet. In large part, she is the reason that my son enjoys playing trumpet and continues to thrive as a musician.

From the beginning she tailored her lessons to include the music that my son was interested in and also added increasingly more complex music to work on and master.

Sandra has taped him playing during lessons to show him how and where he can improve in body position, quality of sound and other nuances. She regularly uses her laptop computer to show videos of performances that support the lesson and also assigns various Internet sites to view for exposure to other musicians and styles.

Sandra regularly provides opportunities for my son to perform in public. He has performed at the annual CMEA event at San Jose State University, and other smaller events where he played solo on stage. They have both joined in at a local café for practice in improvisation, as my son loves to play jazz. This has really helped in his jazz solo opportunities at school. She has also organized a quartet of student trumpet players to work together on various music pieces and then they all performed together for family and friends. This was a unique experience for the children to practice and play together and perform as a group.

My son is also interested in basketball and baseball, and Sandra has been very flexible in scheduling lessons to accommodate my son’s athletic and school schedules. After about 6 months of lessons, she offered twice a week lessons to capitalize on my son’s enthusiasm and increase the speed of musical advancement so his confidence soared and he wanted to play more because he liked doing something he felt he was good at. He kept this schedule for about a year and then back to once a week to allow for more time for other interests.

During middle school, my son played trumpet in both the Advanced Band and also Jazz Band classes. This past summer, Sandra again offered twice weekly lessons to get ready for his high school debut. As a result, he was chosen to play first chair in the high school jazz band. He was also one of only two freshmen that were accepted into the most advanced band class (also known at Wind Ensemble) at Lincoln High School.

I recommend Sandra Laverty, without reservation, for any trumpet teaching opportunity.

I am Jose, graduated as an undergrad at Towson University and currently enrolled at University of Maryland. My career is focus on Spanish Literature and Latin American Studies. Merging both culture and language provides opportunities to research, creative write, independent study themes and topics related to the language of Spanish. Being a teacher means that one once was a student. My student teaching was with middle schoolers and I've always enjoyed working with adult learners. While there is something fantastic about every student, I think I am a uniquely perfect fit for the student that is math-phobic or even hates math.

Math did not always come easily for me and I vividly remember being extremely frustrated, especially in high school. One teacher in college, though, had a different presentation style, and everything started to click. After that, I knew that learning math was as much about the instructor as it was about the student. Moreover, I knew I wanted to be the kind of teacher that worked to meet a student where they were at and then teach to their learning style whe

So when working with me, either alone or in a small group, I will work to get to know you, your goals, your interests, and your learning style. Then I will do everything I can to make the topics relevant to you. I will never answer a "Why" questions with "Just because". If you don't understand when I explain it one way, I will try a different approach, and keep trying until you understand. Learning is a journey, but not one you should make by yourself, and I would be happy to travel some of it with you.

Becky was an amazing instructor. I am certainly not a "math person", I may have even thrown a textbook in frustration... possibly... okay, so I did. But even then, Becky kept her cool, let me vent my frustration, and then helped me to get past my own math issues to actually start to learn something. Not only did she help me get through my lower math requirements, but she helped me through my calculus requirements too. I graduated from college because of her help. I'll always be grateful for that.
