Ever since I was a child, I absolutely loved to write. During my sessions as creative writing tutor, I hope to foster that same love for writing. My students are challenged to stay true to their own voice while simultaneously considering craft, style, syntax, structure, and the myriad elements of engaging, successful writing. My sessions can be catered to a specific goal (standardized testing), or can be an open-ended experience invaluable to academic success.

About Jillian
I have a Master's degree in Music Therapy, am a nationally board certified music therapist (MT-BC); performer and vocal instructor (Bachelor's in Classical Voice); certified yoga instructor and meditation guide (200+); certified and attuned Reiki master; professional freelance writer and editor.

...I find joy in a lot of places! And often I find these areas of study inform and augment each other.

Music therapy has afforded me a great deal of experience working with children, teens, and adults with special needs including, autism, Down's syndrome, cerebral palsy, emotional disturbances and developmental delays as well as teens and adults with psychosocial issues, including but not limited to anxiety, depression, grief, ADHD, personality disorders, and more.

I incorporate my experience as a therapist into the educative setting.

As a voice teacher, I want to help my students settle comfortably into their own musicality by showing them the building blocks of a solid technique, drawing particularly from the things that helped me grow as a vocalist. I want my students to feel strong in their body, comfortable and relaxed in their breath, and confident in their performance.

I am a professional vocalist in NYC. I perform liturgical and classical music, as well as musical theater repertoire. I participate in professional operas, choral groups and other concert series. Performing gives me a sense of bliss and completeness that is indescribable.

As a certified yoga instructor, I teach in many locations throughout Westchester. I was trained at Yoga Haven in Scarsdale, New York with Betsy Kase, and earned a 200-hour certificate in Asana, Pranayama, and Meditation. I offer private yoga instruction and meditation at my home studio. My studio comes fully equipped with all yoga props, aromatherapy, and music. Hands-on-assists and personalized classes offered to deepen your experience.

It is a joy to offer Reiki to curious, open clients in need of energy healing. Reiki is a noninvasive energy healing technique totally separate of any religious affiliation and available to anyone. It is a difficult to describe the relaxing, soothing, and deep-healing effects of Reiki to someone who has never experienced.

Please feel free to inquire about any of my services!

*Note: If you don't see a time slot that is suitable to your needs but would like to try a session or lesson with me, feel free to register for the Flex Plan, and we will work out week-to-week times!!**

**Note: If you are interested in music therapy, please email me with a bit about yourself and your personal goals.

Excellent first voice lesson. Jillian is warm, encouraging, and very knowledgeable. I was surprised how many "technical" issues she introduced me to (optimal breathing & how best to practice it at home; appropriate use of falsetto at upper limit of bass voice range, etc.) . Looking forward to continued lessons. (Much better use of what used to be my copay for psychotherapy! I've also joined rehearsals with new Encore-NYC chorale group in Manhattan, for people over 55. Music is giving me a real emotional lift in my retirement.)

If you are a beginner interested in pursuing fiction or non-fiction writing as a hobby or career or if you are someone who is needing help with working ideas for a class, I can help! Also, I help individuals with editing and revising as well as with developing ideas from scratch or further develop ones an individual already has in mind! I do not look to contribute anything directly to your work (unless desired). Instead, I help with processing ideas and with creating an outline to help you structure your work. Further, I help individuals with creating and developing their 'writing voice.' Throughout the process, I gently provide objective feedback and discuss where improvements should be made. I understand that inspiration is a precious thing that must be incessantly nurtured; therefore, I also help with maintaining good momentum.

I am been inspired by and influenced by various writers of fiction and nonfiction, including Carl Jung, Aldous Huxley,Ernest Hemingway, Kurt Vonnegut, ...

About Andrew
*In order to avoid an awkward schedule, I have limited my availability to a few evenings during the week. However, I am open to working another time that may work best for you.*

I have experience working with people individually and in groups, as an undergrad Psychology intern, a cognitive skills trainer, a counseling student, an adjunct instructor and an academic coach. As an undergrad intern, I worked with elementary school children as a tutor and a mentor. As a counseling student, I have worked with various populations, from grade school students (grades 4-8; making healthier choices) to adults (stress, anxiety, career decisions, bereavement, etc.) to older adults in hospice care. I have facilitated psycho-educational groups with individuals suffering from a mental illness as well. Lastly, I worked with college students at a local u
niversity as an academic coach. In this role, I helped students process concerns and create goals regarding developing time management skills, coping strategies for anxiety, study skills, information processing and motivation. These experiences have helped me gain a continually growing understanding of facilitating the learning process with individuals and with groups.

I teach student development classes (critical thinking, motivation theory, study strategies, time management, stress management, etc.) at a local community college, I teach an upper-level learning and development course (views of learning, motivation, the memory process, memory strategies, critical issues in education, etc.) at a local university, and I work as an academic coach at another local university.

As the information above may suggest, I hold education to such a high, passionate regard. It is what promotes a healthy, well-informed society. As an auto-didactic learner, I believe that everyone has the ability to learn anything one desires. It is a matter of how one approaches it. Therefore, my approach is one that is peculiar to each of the individuals I work with.

I present concepts with the idea that the combination of experience, discourse, and meaning-making is the key to learning. This aside from my teaching tools based on the views of learning. With an aversion towards cookie-cutter approaches, I maintain an open mind to my invariably evolving approach of sharing knowledge and insight with others. This comes with my continual seeking of growth in the art of teaching with consideration of the process of learning. Further, I strive to create a warm, positive atmosphere that allows one to feel comfortable with making mistakes, with making progress and with being themselves. Fundamentally, this is my approach to working with people.

PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT COACHING: Using my insight gained as a counseling student, I am happy to offer my personal development coaching service. In this role, I help individuals develop their path of change, making sure motivation and focus is well-maintained. I provide a judgment-free and understanding atmosphere for one to reflect and process concerns as well as work towards making personal changes (e.g. self-actualization, career, anxiety management, lifestyle, life changes) from an existential perspective. I believe that such a space should be available for everyone, so I am especially happy to provide it.

My approach to personal development coaching is based on my therapeutic orientation called Gestalt Therapy (GT). The underlying idea of GT is that awareness is the key initiator of change. Awareness allows one to discern where such things as anxiety, unhappiness, ambivalence, etc. stem from. I believe that it is important for every human being to go through such a process so that peace and awareness within brings peace and awareness to the outer world. I am inspired by and influenced by the ideas of Carl Jung (Analytical Psychology- particularly the Psychological Types) and Carl Rogers (Client-Centered Therapy). I help facilitate the process in a genuinely humane, empathic and professional manner. If interested, please, see the details I have provided under Life Coaching. I work with grade school students and adults. I am absolutely loyal to the idea of confidentiality; therefore, I ensure that information of anybody I work with is not at risk of being shared with a third party.

ACADEMIC COACHING/STUDY SKILLS: Using my passion for education and my insight gained in my few years (so far) immersed in the world of education, I help students (grade school and college) develop areas of their academic life needing improvement. As suggested above, I help students develop time management, learning strategies, coping strategies for anxiety, and motivation (i.e. help them to see the value of learning). Though it is a valuable tool, it is presently not a service that is offered at most schools in the area.

WRITING: As a lover of reading and writing, I understand the value of expressing thoughts, feelings and ideas. As a writer, my focus is on creative writing (mostly short stories presently) and essays. Given my undergraduate and postgraduate experiences, I have written many academic papers, in APA format and in MLA format. I edit and revise papers as well as help individuals develop their writing voice, develop their ideas, develop an approach to structuring writing, maintain consistency with writing and provide genuine feedback. Beyond that, my help with writing is limited to the goals of the the individual.

TWO IMPORTANT THINGS: I strive to maintain a positive collaboration with those I work with. I believe this is one of the most important parts of the process. Also, I promote the idea of Soul. To me, Soul is any sincere display of passion. With Soul, we perform in a most genuine and graceful way. I personally believe that whether one is playing the piano, writing a story, living life, singing, giving a speech or anything (necessarily peaceful), one should do it with Soul.

LASTLY, I am open to: Going beyond my travel radius, at an agreed-upon adjusted rate; working with multiple students, at an agreed-upon adjusted rate; meeting at a public place that is convenient, if it is preferred; and meeting at a student's location, depending on the preferred time and the distance.

I mentioned everything that is above so that it may be known and understood. Feel free to send me a message if you have questions about any of the services I provide, my approach or anything!

PEACE BE WITHIN YOU

I have to give Andrew 5 stars for the first lesson. He really cares about meeting goals specific to the person he is teaching. He started out with some basic exorcises that I can do at home and then we talked about how the lessons can be structured in the future for what I think I need to improve. He was very nice and I highly recommend him!

I would describe this instructor as polite, courteous, relaxed, punctual, calm, non-judgmental, competent, and prepared. The session began promptly at the appointed time. The video and audio connections worked flawlessly with no lag time. The video began with the casually dressed instructor seated in her residence. After brief introductions, the instructor asked what I wanted to get out of these lessons. I explained that I wanted to learn how to slow down my speaking voice and to lower the pitch of my voice to come across as more authoritative. The instructor then explained that my goals were common and that she believed she could help me. At that point, the instructor began discussing psychological and emotional issues, which caught me by surprise. After a brief discussion, the instructor then told me her thoughts and opinions, which were based on psychological and emotional issues rather than what I considered to be voice or speech issues. The instructor thoroughly explained the correlation between the two in a way that I understood. Finally, the instructor proposed a lesson plan and sent me a few resources to review before the next session. I went into the first session open minded without any concrete expectations and was pleasantly surprised. There were no mind games, gimmicks, or tricks. The instructor was pleasant and seemed genuinely interested in my case. I did not hesitate scheduling the next session.

I am a published writer with a masters degree, and years of teaching. I've worked with people of all ages and backgrounds. Whether you need help with basic writing, or completing a specific project, I can help. I can be your teacher, your writing coach, or the person who helps you brainstorm and think it through. Essay tests? Wedding toasts? Eulogies? College applications? Novels? Cover letters? I've helped people with all of them. Ask me a question. Maybe I can help you.

About Marion
Hi, I'm Marion. I bring a lifetime of experience helping people of all ages improve their writing, and English skills. My experience with second language learners is extensive. Whatever your skill set, age, abilities, or background, I can help make you a better writer.

I've worked with middle, high school and college students on developing the reading, writing and research skills needed for success in many academic areas. I've worked with second language learners on speaking, reading, and writing.

Preparing for essay tests is one of my areas of expertise, but my teaching philosophy is less about preparing for a particular test than it is about developing strategies that work for a broad number of tests and in real life situations.

I love working with adults and younger people on developing storytelling techniques, and public spe
aking skills for presentations and interviews, as well as for personal events. These are great confidence builders with real world results!

Whatever type of writing you need to work on, it would be my honor and privilege to work with you.

Though I teach for a living while completing my degree, I'm also a writer. Research and essay writing appeal to me especially, not to mention fiction.

About Simeon
The most important attributes of any teacher are empathy and patience.

I currently attend Harvard University and work as a professional writer and tutor. I've lived all over the United States, although I grew up in Scotland of all places. My scores on the SAT and ACT were perfect (1600 and 36 respectively), though I too had to work hard to get there, so I know what it's like when you're just starting out.

Over the years, I've worked with students suffering from ADD, autism, dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, speech disorders, and depression; I personally grew up inured to social anxiety, so I can always empathize.

Some tutors will tell you that they know all the tricks and shortcuts. But really, there are no tricks. No shortcuts. Just hard work and sleepless nights and talking to yourself while brushing your teeth in the morning
trying to remember the quadratics formula.

*****************************************************

I have a decade of experience and a vast collection of study materials that I can share with you for free. I've had the privilege to help hundreds of students with everything from college applications and essays to Creative Writing and Calculus, not to mention the GRE, GMAT, LSAT, MCAT, ASVAB, and AP and SAT II subject tests, like Literature, Statistics, Physics, Biology, and Chemistry as well.

I absolutely love writing, of course, so I can teach you how to write an action scene or listen to a poem.

During the Summer of 2017, I reached out to Simeon with the goal of boosting my ACT score. Initially, I made a 25 Composite on my first practice test. My goal was to make a 32+ Composite, so I knew that I had a long way to go. When Simeon and I started working together, I'll admit that I struggled a bit. However, I continued to grit through the problem-types that were constantly tripping me up, and shortly thereafter I saw my Composite score approach a 30!
After a few more months of working with Simeon, I got to the point where I was consistently scoring in the 33-34 Composite range and thus decided to take the official exam. The result: a 33 Composite (36 E 34 M 33 R 27 S (I more or less just ran out of steam toward the end))!
I couldn't recommend Simeon or his approach any more if I tried! Initially, I struggled with Math and Science more than anything else. However, Simeon was able to explain Math concepts in a way that were able to stick. And the Science strategies he equipped me with helped me fly through the section, improving my score dramatically (I went from making a 21 on Science to making a 34 -- I didn't do my best with Science on test day, but that one's on me).
As a perfect ACT scorer and Harvard grad, Simeon is able to explain literally every single ACT concept in a clear and concise way to help his students best understand the material. If you're looking to supercharge your ACT score, look no further than Simeon! Not to mention, he's one of the nicest guys I've ever met. I will forever be in debt to him and all of his incredible help!

Simeon is simply the best teacher I've ever had. He has helped me raise my SAT scores considerably. Before Simeon's help, I would score around the low 500's for the math portion, my weakest subject, afterwards I could consistently score a near perfect score. If I don't quite understand something he is willing to take the time to make sure I do and to encourage me during those really tough problems I cannot thank Simeon enough for helping me get into my dream school!

We will first establish what it is the student is hoping to improve upon in their writing, and what types of writing they would like to work on (creative, essays, research papers, thesis writing, etc.). From there we can establish a plan to move forward over the course of our lessons to accomplish what the student would like to accomplish. We can work on homework assignments, research projects, email writing etiquette, cover letters, CVs, etc. Whatever your writing goals are, I would love to help you accomplish them!

About Elisa
Hi, there! My name is Elisa Alfonso and I can't wait to meet you! I've been teaching private lessons since 2012 and have loved helping my students learn and/or improve their flute playing and improve their general understanding of music. I also really love helping students learn to articulate their ideas on paper! I went to East Carolina University and earned my BM in Music Performance and a BA in Hispanic Studies in 2016. I strive to make lessons both a fun and productive experience for students, and will use the educational goals that the student identifies to structure custom lesson plans for that student. I strongly believe in explaining the reasoning behind activities so students understand the goals that they are working towards in our lessons, and I am passionate about helping my students succeed. I look forward to helping you reac

Sometimes writing can be exhausting and challenging if you tend to suffer from "writer's block". Through coaching on grammar, spelling, brainstorming, and essay organization, our lessons will build upon your writing skills and take you to the next level. Whether it's research papers or creative writing assignments, I can help you reach a new-found confidence in your authorial voice.

About Jennifer
Introduction:
While I am primarily a musician, I am also a freelance proofreader, and I always excelled in English class. Much of this "about me" section pertains to my musical background, as that is my primary profession. My reading and writing background is included later on in this section.

Flute Experience:
I started playing the flute when I was in fourth grade. My elementary school offered weekly flute classes, then in fifth grade we had weekly orchestra classes. But I loved the flute so much I wanted more. I began private lessons at 10 years old, and I have never looked back. From there, I went on to play in my high school's marching band, concert band, pit orchestra, and symphony orchestra; I played in three different flute choirs and my local youth orchestra outside of school; I earned two performance degrees from
the University of North Texas (Bachelor of Music) and Stony Brook University (Master of Music); I have performed with orchestras in the United States, Canada, and Europe; I have played in pit orchestras for musicals and operas; I have competed in solo competitions, I have auditioned for professional orchestras, and I have taught dozens of students of all ages across the country.
I remain eternally grateful to all my generous mentors who have inspired me throughout my career. My mentors include notable flutists Dr. Mary Karen Clardy, Dr. Elizabeth McNutt, Francine Ross Pancost, Dr. James Scott, Terri Sundberg, Jim Walker, and Carol Wincenc.

Flute, Piccolo, and Music Performance Lessons:
As a teacher, I strive to put my students first. I work with you, and for you, to help you grow as a musician or as a student. I do not believe in a one-size-fits-all mentality. Instead, I believe in a flexible and customizable teaching model, which creates a highly personalized learning experience. Whether you have been playing for 20 years and want to get back in shape, or you first touched a flute last week, I can help you to build upon your flute, piccolo, or performance skills. I pride myself in giving my students 110%, and I hope that that resonates with you as you search for a teacher who fits your needs.

Reading and Writing:
As a tutor for reading and writing, I focus on reaching whatever goal we set out to achieve when you become my student. Whether you need help analyzing literature, taking notes from a text book, or organizing a research paper, I am determined to help you become the best version of yourself. Jennifer is a great flutist and instructor! She is very knowledgeable, helpful, and really knows how to articulate her ideas and communicate with the student. She is encouraging and creative in her approach towards her students. She helped me very much with my piccolo playing.

I have listened to Jennifer as she gave flute lessons to several young beginning students. I observed that she truly cares about her students and invests herself in their progress. She has a creative teaching style, always coming up with new ways to approach the challenges of each individual student. She spends time to discover the students’ goals and structures their lesson plans accordingly. Jennifer is also a good communicator with the parents of younger students, making sure they are informed and inviting them to observe lessons if they wish. I’m sure you’ll find her a delight to work with.
