About Andrew
I've been studying music for 10 years now. Having come to music later in life than most, I find that I am more empathetic to the perspective of the beginning student than many teachers. I spent the Summer of 2009 teaching music fundamentals to groups of severely physically and mentally disabled children of all ages. Since then I've completed my Bachelors degree in Music, taught privately and with several established music schools.

To me, music is above all about transformation. Beautiful sound transforms our experience of the environment, and learning an instrument can help students approach life as one big instrument they need to practice to master.
Learning to play an instrument is also an experience of training one’s nervous system to gradually act and respond in new ways, and that kind of persistent, focused
, training is applicable to any new skill.
Last and definitely not least, playing music is fun.

*** Lesson Details ***

I plan my lessons around getting students to enjoy playing music as soon as possible, whether that means learning how to strum a chord rhythmically, playing their favorite song, or how to take a blues solo.
There are steps that have to be climbed to do more complex things and I encourage students to practice a little every day rather than for a long time once or twice a week. Developing a love of music and steady practice habits are more beneficial over the long term than practicing until your limit.

*** Studio Equipment ***
I currently have a living room space where I can teach, but it's small so it might be preferable to travel to you.

*** Travel Equipment ***
If necessary I can provide amplification, cables, and a microphone.

*** Specialties ***
Jazz, Folk, Blues, Rock, Hip-hop, Funk, Reggae.

About Brace
Brace N. has been a prolific performer since his arrival to New York in 1998. Brace recently brought his “powerful bass baritone voice” to Hubbard Hall Opera Theatre as the title character in Don Pasquale. Recent performances include a “Bolgeresque Leporello [that]was truly hilarious” in Don Giovanni with the Bronx Opera; Bass soloist in Handel’s Te Deum and PDQ Bach’s Missa Hilarious and Handel’s Easter Oratorio with the Oratorio Singers and Orchestra of Westfield, New Jersey; Colline in La Boheme with Opera Manhattan; Pandolfe in Massenet’s Cendrillon with New York Lyric Opera Company; Count Ceprano in Rigoletto with San Antonio Opera; Figaro in a concert version of Le nozze di Figaro with the Northern Dutchess Symphony Orchestra; and Pantaleone in Bronx Opera’s Der Drei Pintos.
In July of 2009, Brace had his European opera debut perf
orming the title role of Donizetti’s Don Pasquale as well as the Bonze in Puccini’s Madame Butterfly with Lyrique en Mer Opera Company in Belle Île, France with a national radio broadcast of Don Pasquale’s first act on the radio station, France Musique. In the fall of 2008, Brace had his debut with Toledo Opera as Count Ceprano in Verdi’s Rigoletto with a favorable mention in the Toledo Blade Newspaper that read “In supporting roles soprano Kirsten Chambers as Countess Ceprano and bass-baritone Brace as her indignant husband, Count Ceprano, were standouts in the first act, opening scene”. In March 2009, Brace was invited back to Toledo Opera to perform the 1st Nazarene and the Cappadocian in Strauss’s Salome.
Past performances include Jupiter in Offenbach's Orpheus and the Underworld with Bronx Opera which nabbed Brace a solid review in the New York Times stating that “The bass-baritone Brace, one of the better singers on Saturday, also demonstrated comic gifts as the swaggering, hypocritical Jupiter”; Figaro in Le nozze di Figaro with the Queens College Opera Studio; Christiano in Verdi's Un ballo in maschera with Des Moines Metro Opera where he received a review in the October 2008 issue of Opera News; Finalist in the Azuriales Opera Festival/Competition Concert Series performed in Beaulieu sur Mer, France; a Lincoln Center debut as Ali in an excerpts program of Rossini's L'Italiana as part of the Melody for Peace UNESCO Concert at Avery Fisher Hall; Gregorio in Romeo et Juliette and 2nd Armored Man in Zauberflote both with New Jersey Opera Theater; performer with the Lucerne Festival in Lucerne, Switzerland, under Maestro Pierre Boulez and Daniel Reusse; an Asian debut in Singapore with Singapore Theatreworks as the lead The Cowherd in The Silver River by Bright Sheng; and finalist in the Heinz Rehfuss Competition held in Orlando, Florida.

I break up the lessons as follows, unless requested to do otherwise (based on an hour lesson):

-20 minutes working range, movement, flexibility, dynamics, breath control and general strengthening of the voice
-20 minutes rep work: we work the song your brought to work on

*** Studio Equipment ***
Piano. Acoustic guitar. Electric guitar. Metronome. Living room seating for parents.

*** Travel Equipment ***

*** Specialties ***
I am mainly an opera singer. That's definitely my forte but have performed and taught other styles, particulalry music theater. Could fiddle with jazz for a bit too but not to take someone to super advanced levels. General performing of any type of singing would also be something I could definitely help with- I myself am a successful performer signed by a major agent in the opera world.

I have worked as a tutor for several years and taught a variety of subjects. My main goal is to equip every student with tools they need to be successful. I care more about comprehension and learning, than grades. I work with each student individual to develop a personalized plan of organization, motivation, and accountability.

About Benjamin
I have extensively studied vocal performance for many years and continue to add to my own technique. I have a Master of Vocal Performance Degree from the Chicago College of Performing Arts. I currently work for a recording studio (Sound Summit Studios in Naperville IL) where I teach voice and help singers record their music in the studio. I have previously taught at The School of Rock in Indianapolis Indiana. I have administered vocal lessons to every voice type at all different levels. Several of my students have recored albums and are currently performing all over the U.S.

I have a bachelors degree in biology with a minor in art. After graduating college, I was a full-time high school biology teacher, volleyball coach, and director of the school musical. As a high school teacher, I learned first hand the kind of pressure and expectat
ions that are placed on students in order for them to succeed. In college, I was the head student researcher on a two-year lab project. I took several upper level science courses including: biochemistry, calculus, organic chemistry, calculus based physics, cell biology, anatomy, and physiology. I studied marine biology in the Virgin Islands and am CPR certified.

*** Lesson Details ***
Voice lessons with me are fun and effective. You can expect to hear improved technique from day one, eventually reaching your long term goals. I begin every lesson aligning the students voice through various vocal warm ups and exercises. We then work together to pick repertoire that will suit the singer'€™s voice and they will enjoy singing. During a lesson we will also cover performance presentation, acting, diction, rhythm, musicality, style, and interpretation.

During tutoring you can expect a personalized plan based on your goals and aspirations. Since every student is different you can be assured we will come up with a plan that is designed just for you. I am a laid back tutor but will be sure to get the most out of you after our time together. Most students see at least a one letter grade improvement. My main goal for every tutoring session is student learning and comprehension.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Piano, recording equipment, large collection of sheet music

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in helping students find their true singing voice.

First, I had some previous singing lesson but did not really get to sing properly and my throat was always straining. Benjamin took me from the basic with breathing and how to correctly lean on the air. It took a little time, and now i feel so comfortable when I sing. My vocal resonance and control has really improved. I do not sing with my throat no more, I feel effortless and I control my intercoastal muscles very well. Benjamin is really Great, Patient and Understanding instructor. He has made to start loving and accepting my voice.
I strongly recommend him to anyone who wants to learn the freedom of singing and how good it feels to sing your favorite songs at ease.

Benjamin is a wonderful vocal teacher! I have been singing my entire life, and within the months I have been taking lessons from him I have seen a great amount of improvement in my vocal abilities. I highly recommend him whether you are new to singing or you have been singing for many years.

I told you this guy is a closet piano player disguised as a singing coach. However cudos to him after all. He actually had me singing with my own piano today. Thought I would never say thanks, Ben, but today I must say thanks because he was teaching me harmony with my own piano. I might like this after all. Good weekend all.......

I have been tutoring academic subjects for five years, and history is a particular strong suit of mine. I minored in history as an undergraduate student and am now studying history as a graduate student. We will work on understanding historical events, as well as social studies concepts. We can work on projects as well work on analytical questions and Regents prep.

About Melissa
Hi there! I'm Melissa, and I am a fashion design and sewing teacher on Staten Island. I have been teaching children and adults how to sew since 2014. I've been sewing since I was a child, and I've been teaching since 2007.

I am mostly self-taught, and that, coupled with my youth, gives me a unique perspective when teaching. My first goal is to give my students all of the tools they need to feel confident from the very first lesson- almost all of my students finish the first hour with a handy drawstring bag to keep their new sewing supplies in. I have a specific sewing curriculum for the first 3-5 lessons that helps lay a groundwork for making more exciting things.

After we finish those steps, I work individually with students to make whatever they would like, from Halloween costumes to memory pillows to peplum tops. The choice is
yours. I'm not the kind of teacher that is going to make you spend hours mastering a straight hem because frankly, that's really boring. I want you to learn while working on projects you care about

My experience includes;

-I worked in a tutoring school teaching kids from ages 5-17 in all subjects.
-I designed a program called Creative Studios for creative writing, fashion design and fine art. I taught these subjects to students aged 8-12.
-I teach sewing and fashion design (including fashion drawing) to various students in a one on one format.
-I teach fashion design and sewing to tweens, teens, and adults at SI Dance and Arts Center
-I am a resident costumer for Sundog Theatre.
-I taught at the Harlem Educational Activities Fund Saturday Academy
-I am pursuing a Masters in Adolescent Education in Social Studies

Please note that I am located in Staten Island, NY. I may be able to accommodate some Brooklyn students, but please inquire before booking. I have locations in 10306 and 10309 that can accommodate students if you don't wish to learn in home.

My studio space is located at Staten Island Dance and Art Center. It's a lovely, artsy space with bright yellow walls, four sewing machines, 2 professional mannequins, and a closet full of fabric and notions!

I took AP World History and AP US History in high school. I love analyzing events in history and seeing connections/causes/effects between seemingly unrelated events. I stress long-term understanding instead of short-term memorizing of events/dates.

I also have 3 years of math/science tutoring experience, which will surely come in handy!

About Bill
I have always been a self-studier in my entire life. Being able to learn with just books and your brain is a crucial skill to have! However, I know not everyone (and sometimes even myself) have the discipline and motivation to keep going during hard times. This is where a tutor would come in handy.

I enjoy tutoring and helping other overcome problems that I have encountered myself because it enhances my own understanding and makes me happy that my self-studying is helping others. Sometimes, my students even bring up alternative ways of thinking that I have never thought of before!

I consider the real lesson of history to be in the connections between the past and the present. My goal is to not only increase a student's academic skills but also help them understand how the trends and patterns of history created the world we live in through real examples.

I have a wide breadth of knowledge of many different eras of history. I studied history in school but I'm also largely self-taught and thus very passionate about it. I put equal effort into learning both US and world history and understanding how they are interrelated. Different perspectives are a vital part of understanding history, particularly in a country like the United States with our unique position on the global stage, so I make sure to emphasize relevant ideas from within and outside of the traditional narrative.

I like to start every session by considering what the student already knows about he subject and going from there. I also like to go over long and short term goals for students and ...

About James
I am a passionate researcher and lover of history. My interest in this area has led me to collect a rather extensive library of books on widely varying subjects. My favorite historical subjects include politics, baseball, music, espionage and military history. I'm fascinated with the human experience of history, so I like to watch documentaries and read first hand accounts of people who actually lived through some of the great events I've studied. I consider different perspectives on history important, so a lot of my books are written by people who come from a different country from me or who look at a historical event from an angle not covered in my history classes. I even took an American history course in Australia to try and understand the way the rest of the world views the US.

I have a degree in film from Ithaca College and I consi
der movies another great passion of mine. My favorite movies vary widely and include Solaris, Godzilla, Seven Samurai and Star Wars. I worked for several years in the film industry but unsurprisingly, my real interest is in the history of cinema and the way history is portrayed in films. While in college I also studied writing, both fiction and nonfiction, and world history.

After college I lived and worked in Los Angeles for a few years to be closer to where films are produced before spending some time in Norway to learn about organic farming and Viking history. My family has Norwegian heritage so this was especially personal to me, and continues to be a favorite historical subject of mine. These days I live in Brooklyn and continue expanding my knowledge of history and following my various hobbies and passions.

When I'm not reading, watching movies or trying to get people to talk about history with me I like to listen to music, play guitar, draw, paint, cook and make chainmail armor. You could say I'm a nerd.
