What is my background?
I am an experienced performing artist and teacher that works in New York and regionally. I have developed a keen ability to assess and shape talent from years of training, teaching, performing, and working with the head of Arts programs to conduct admissions interviews, student evaluations, and performances. I attended Barnard College, Columbia University, and Maggie Flanigan's acting conservatory program. My training at Columbia University and privately with notable musicians focused on classical repertoire and theory, but I also work with students on popular music (i.e. Pop, R&B, Electronica, and Folk).

What are the profiles of my students?
My students come from different walks of life: children coming from school who bound excitedly to my lesson door; teenage artists who have the passion and vision but lack the technique; working adults who seek reprieve from the stress of work by singing/ learning an instrument that they've always wanted to play; and seniors who want a fun hobby to keep active. I enjoy teaching them and watching them master the fundamentals while developing their own performance style (or even composing their own music)!
What is my teaching style?
Based on feedback, students appreciate that I am a teacher with a warm personality whose supportive, passionate, and fun approach and effective techniques help them attain the following: 1) a firm understanding of the fundamentals of music theory or acting technique; 2) an ability to effectively learn how to perform and practice singing/playing/acting a piece; and 3) a style of performing that minimizes tension, produces beautiful sound or a dynamic character, and/or allows them to fully express themselves. After a few months, students should have sound knowledge of all three.
My students and I connect, in part, because I remember being like them. On stage, I started out dancing and acting; I delved into singing and songwriting and then fell in love with playing the piano. The day that I learned how to merge those passions (i.e. singing while playing the piano) was one of the happiest days of my life! Now, whether I'm performing Shakespeare on stage, playing Chopin and Beethoven, or singing while playing tunes by Whitney Houston, I still get excited. Hopefully, I fuel that excitement in you, too!
What is the lesson structure?
Due to the comprehensive nature of my teaching style and structure, students above the age of 6 take lessons for 60 minutes; 30-minute lessons are only available for children aged 5-6. If a student wants to learn how to play while singing, I am happy to help him/her do so!

My interests also include gifted learning and STEM education. For example, I was successful in helping a 5-year old pass the NYC Gifted & Talented Test so he could enroll in any New York City school participating in the program.
I have several years experience working with various people from different backgrounds as an engineer (hardware+software) and as business developer in multinational companies and startups and this exposure has given me deeper and practical insights into personality and intelligence enabling me to adapt my teaching style to different needs and situations. Furthermore, I have learned from experience that there are three best tools for learning: practice, practice and more practice!
Tutoring for yourself or for your son/daughter is both an investment in time and money for a future return so please also plan accordingly. Now, I make sure that I do not totally depend on tutoring for income so I can maintain a certain level of quality. In other words, when there is a match in objective, budget and schedule, I am quite happy to be part of someone's educational journey. I consider it indeed a very special privelege to be able to help a student because it is my experience that effective education can be life-changing. Finally, I am aware that other tutors may be in a better position to meet your existing situation so we have to accept that and move on.
Tutoring Rate (IMPORTANT): I only do in-person tutoring because I believe effective learning is multi-dimensional and personal not flat and distant. My minimum lesson length is 1.5 hours for Academic subjects and 2.0 hours for Test Prep. My rates for children and teens will in principle be at least the same as adults because I actually invest more time and effort since I have to consider the feedback of at least 2 individuals (student+guardian) compared with an adult student. Different arrangements possible on a case-by-case basis. Please see each subject rate for more details.
When I am not tutoring, I am involved in projects related to technology, hospitality and service industries. I also enjoy cooking especially when I can make an ordinary dish into something extra-ordinary by adding that little "extra."

The history of my academic-philosophical-work extends back to my senior year of high school, during which I was afforded the opportunity to participate in two philosophy seminars: one on normative ethics, and the other on existentialism. These two courses confirmed some of what I had suspected all my life but had not yet found the words to express — that we are not a
In college I focused on philosophy, in particular, ethics, epistemology, metaphysics, existentialism, philosophy of mind, philosophy of language, and philosophy of religion. And in addition to studying and writing I co-ran Hampshire’s philosophy club. I also became the Teaching Assistant for my professors Introduction To Philosophy seminar. I wrote a thesis during my senior year on the Scottish philosopher David Hume’s empirical account of personal identity — and his related confession(s).
In the two years since my graduation from Hampshire, I have continued to write about and ponder consciousness. Over the course of the past year, I have been teaching a philosophy course at two middle schools in Brooklyn through a New York City-funded after school program called “Play Study Win”. Teaching this interesting age group, has caused me to realize that I want to become a philosophy professor one day. And now I tutor.
