I have been successfully teaching ESL for many years now. I received my TESOL certification from Teachers College, Columbia University and I also have my BEST Plus Certification. I love teaching ESL because it allows me to hone my English and teaching skills, while also giving me the opportunity to meet people from all over the world. I am constantly working to discover the most unique and effective teaching methods possible.

About Abby
Hi!

I am a certified ESL teacher and academic tutor. I have experience teaching all levels of English, including English for the workplace. I have taught ESL speaking and writing classes at St. John's University; Teachers College, Columbia University; the New Americans Welcome Center; as well as through numerous private organizations. I also tutor students who need help with English/Social Studies/Literature classes, AP English classes, the REGENTS and the SAT.

I hold a BA in Media Studies and an MA in Middle-Eastern Studies. Therefore, if you need any help writing papers in the arts/humanities/history, I would be happy to help out. Prior to working as an ESL teacher, I worked in publishing as a literary assistant/ online editor and had great success editing manuscripts, papers, and even blogs.

As far as teaching is concerned, I
genuinely enjoy helping others and try to make my classes/ sessions as communicative and engaging as possible. Tutoring is a refreshing experience for me since I learn something new from my students each and every day.

Learning is just a matter of perspective; finding new ways to look at and explore the world around you. I look forward to meeting you and exploring together!

Abby is a great teacher. I was lucky to find her on this website. She genuinely cares about her students and wants them to improve their language skills. She is very friendly and easy to work with. She let you choose a topic or suggests a topic that you might like it. We have been focusing on my speaking and writing skills. I have made a big progress in just over a year. I highly recommend Abby !

Abby is a really attentive teacher, she has been a big help to English. Besides the weekly lessons, we also worked on some articles for my blog and for my portfolio site. She was really involved and she had a lot of original and creative ideas. Working with her is a surprisingly efficient experience for me. Thanks to her, my English knowledge got better earlier than I expected. In addition, she is a really
caring person, and she always has new ideas about how to improve. She also pays attention for her students personal interests and prepares individual materials for each lesson.

Detra has been such a blessing to our family. She came to our home to evaluate our 7-year old daughter who has struggled with reading. She had a great rapport with our daughter, made her feel comfortable and even have fun during the evaluation. She has a patient and positive demeanor and put our daughter at ease. She then spent over an hour with me (her mom), going over the results of the evaluation and recommending steps to work on. Since that time, she has answered my many questions, offering additional resources and encouragement. Looking forward to having her work more with our daughter. Highly recommend Detra!

Ms. Damskov showed amazing love and care for my child and her job. She enthusiastically learned as much as she could about each subject so that she could teach it back to my struggling 8 year old. She is a wonderful tutor and teacher that I would readily send any of my 4 children to. I have full confidence that any of Ms. Damskov's students will not only do well under her, but far excel any expectations.
Your student will develop a love of learning under Ms. Damskov's teaching.

Before our first lesson, I will send you a questionnaire that will ask you your goals and struggles with the English language.

In the first lesson, we will discuss your goals and struggles for learning English. I will then design lessons tailored to your English language needs. During each lesson, you will have my undivided attention. I will correct your mistakes and answer any English-related questions you may have.

Is English your second language? As a trained classical singer, I have developed my own program for accent reduction complete with vocal anatomy education and speech therapy exercises. I provide a variety of different services for ESL/EFL clients such as Conversational or Vocational English, ESL/EFL Basic and Advanced Composition, TOEFL Test Preparation, and Accent Reduction.

About Shannon
Shannon helps teenage and adult clients discover their unique talents and cultivate their public speaking, writing, and communication skills. She has over fifteen years of experience teaching communication at public universities, ESL/EFL classrooms, and the non-profit sector. Her teaching philosophy is humanist, supporting her clients to speak and write their truths from varying perspectives, backgrounds, and levels of writing experience. Shannon doesn't just look at your writing, but she provides an integrative, whole-person approach to help you work through negative thinking, the complete writing process, and time management. She has referred to her specialized program as "mindful communications."

The most obvious reaction by a student who's studying English as a Second Language is, "This is different from my native language." That's why I begin with a systematic discussion of the differences between English and the student's native language. For example, there's a rule in Spanish that words don't begin with "sp," so we have the words 'espagnol' and 'especial.' As a result, native speakers of Spanish have trouble pronouncing "Spanish" and 'special."
This is what psychologists call "negative transfer," and there are many other examples.
Once we have dealt with negative transfer issues, I proceed on the principle that it is easier to go from pictures to words than from words to words, so I use a lot of picture books, which lend themselves to discussion questions.

About Jim
From the time I was about 12, I knew that I wanted to be a teacher. It's the only thing I've ever wanted to do, and the only thing I've ever done. I taught Russian for 31 years at the University of Missouri-Columbia, and now that I'm a Professor Emeritus, I miss the classroom and want to teach as much as possible.
